Mobility of mercury in soil and its transport into the sea.

Mercury (Hg) is deposited temporarily in soil and can be remobilised into rivers and seas. Given that rivers are a significant part of the mercury budget in the southern Baltic region (inland sea located in northern Europe) and meteorological changes (e.g. intense rain, drought) are observed more frequently, it is important to recognize the factors affecting the cycling of bioavailable Hg forms. The aim of this study was to identify the processes influencing the changes of labile and stabile mercury proportion in soil and the potential impact on the outflow of labile Hg into fluvial systems. Molecular analysis of mucopolysaccharidosis type VI in Poland, Belarus, Lithuania and Estonia.

Mucopolysaccharidosis VI (MPS VI) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by a deficiency of N-acetylgalactosamine-4-sulfatase (ARSB). Over 130 ARSB gene mutations have been identified thus far and most mutations are unique to individual families. We aimed to analyze the spectrum of mutations in the ARSB gene responsible for the disorder in Poland, Belarus and Baltic States. Twenty one families with MPS VI patients, in whom diagnosis was confirmed biochemically and enzymatically, were studied. Direct sequencing of patient genomic DNA was used to identify ARSB mutations. In total, fourtee

The potential future contribution of shipping to acidification of the Baltic Sea.

International regulation of the emission of acidic sulphur and nitrogen oxides from commercial shipping has focused on the risks to human health, with little attention paid to the consequences for the marine environment. The introduction of stricter regulations in northern Europe has led to substantial investment in scrubbers that absorb the sulphur oxides in a counterflow of seawater. This paper examines the consequences of smokestack and scrubber release of acidic oxides in the Baltic Sea according to a range of scenarios for the coming decades. While shipping is projected to become a major

Combining hydrodynamic modelling with genetics: can passive larval drift shape the genetic structure of Baltic Mytilus populations?

While secondary contact between Mytilus edulis and Mytilus trossulus in North America results in mosaic hybrid zone formation, both species form a hybrid swarm in the Baltic. Despite pervasive gene flow, Baltic Mytilus species maintain substantial genetic and phenotypic differentiation. Exploring mechanisms underlying the contrasting genetic composition in Baltic Mytilus species will allow insights into processes such as speciation or adaptation to extremely low salinity. Previous studies in the Baltic indicated that only weak interspecific reproductive barriers exist and discussed the putativ

Tick-borne borrelioses pathogen identification in Ixodes ticks (Acarina, Ixodidae) collected in St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad Baltic regions of Russia.

Two isolated Baltic seashore populations of Ixodes ticks were studied as vectors of different Borrelia genospecies in Russia by using darkfield microscopy and modified polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In the Kalinigrad region (Kurish Spit, forests near the settlements of Lesnoye and Rybachy), 788 Ixodes ricinus (L.) adults and nymphs were collected by flagging and studied by darkfield microscopy during 1995-1996. There were 88 darkfield microscopy positive specimens (11.2%) of which 69 were also analyzed by PCR. Borrelia afzelii and B. garinii were found individually and together in ticks. In

Detection of chemical warfare agent related phenylarsenic compounds and multibiomarker responses in cod (Gadus morhua) from munition dumpsites.

Recently, sea-dumped chemical weapons (CWs) containing toxic chemical warfare agents (CWAs) have raised international attention. It is well known that CWAs are leaking from corroded munitions causing a risk to the surrounding marine environment, while the impact on marine biota is still unknown. In this study, cod (Gadus morhua) was used as a model species to study the possible bioaccumulation of phenylarsenic CWAs and their negative effects at multiple levels of biological organization on fish living in the vicinity of a major CWs dumpsite in the Bornholm Basin in the Baltic Sea. Haematology, blood biochemistry, parasites and pathology of common eider (Somateria mollisima) males during a mortality event in the Baltic.

A mortality event at the Christiansø colony in the Baltic proper killed 115 common eiders (Somateria mollissima) in mid-May 2016. To complement previous studies of incubating females, 39 males were necropsied and from a subsample of these a biochemical and haematological profile was obtained. The birds were emaciated and cachexic having a 50% reduction in body mass. Twenty-nine eiders were diagnosed with hydropericardium, 15 had hunger edema, three birds had enteritis and a single air sac infection. All birds were infested with intestinal Polymorphus minutus and 32 of these with the intestinal

Temporal changes in the content of labile and stabile mercury forms in soil and their inflow to the southern Baltic Sea.

Rivers represent the main source of mercury (Hg) in the Southern Baltic. Nevertheless, the concentration and proportion of individual Hg forms in rivers depend on the management of the river basin, as well as on the intensity of meteorological phenomena. Hence the aim of the present study was to determine the influence of drought and rains/intense rains on the content of labile and stable Hg forms in the soil of river catchments with various types of land management, and on the inflow of bioavailable mercury to the coastal zone of the sea. Soil and sediment samples were taken from two rivers f

Total, methyl and organic mercury in sediments of the Southern Baltic Sea.

Distribution of sedimentary mercury in the Southern Baltic was investigated. Sediment samples were collected from the Southern Baltic in the period from 2009 to 2011, and concentrations of sedimentary total mercury (average 102 ng/g, range 5.8-225 ng/g) and methyl mercury (average 261 pg/g, range 61-940 pg/g) were measured in the manner that the influence of both patchiness and seasonal changes were assessed. Moreover, sedimentary mercury extracted with organic solvent- the so-called organic mercury was also analyzed (average 425 pg/g, range 100-1440 pg/g). There is a statistically significant

Beyond the "European health divide": Functional limitation disparities among older adults in Central and Eastern Europe.

OBJECTIVES: Countries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) generally have worse health outcomes than the rest of Europe, commonly referred to as the "European health divide". Regional specificities and historical pathways can shape health outcomes later in life, although variance of older adult functional limitation within CEE is understudied. METHODS: We used wave 9 (2021-2022) data (n = 18,903) from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) with mixed effects regression models to analyze difficulty with mobility, near vision, hearing, and episodic memory among those ages

Preferences of seniors living in selected Baltic Sea region countries towards the use of indoor public space furniture.

Demographic changes can be observed all over the world. The number of seniors located in the societies of well-developed countries continues to rise. Both enterprises and governments need to be prepared for such changes. Consequently, public spaces need to evolve to reduce problems related to ageism and be friendly to all. Much attention is currently being paid to finding solutions for redesigning public spaces and adjusting them to the needs and requirements of senior citizens. To identify the preferences of seniors in relation to the characteristics of furniture in indoor public spaces, a su

A study on the effect of different rifle calibres in euthanisation of grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) in seal traps in the Baltic Sea.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the euthanasia of seals has been discussed internationally and concern has been raised regarding the use of rifles, the effect of different calibres, and which calibres are sufficient for humane euthanasia. This study therefore investigated the effect of different firearm calibres on euthanasia of grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) in traps, and provides information for the development and refinement of regulations for hunting seals in the wild. FINDINGS: The effect of different calibres was studied in 19 seals shot in the head and neck at close range. All seals were

Mercury in water and sediments of the southern Baltic sea.

Total mercury concentrations [HgT] were measured in samples of water and sediments collected from the southern Baltic Sea from the period 1993-1995. Picomolar concentrations of HgT were found in offshore surface water. Higher levels were measured in samples from the plum of the Vistula. An exceptionally high concentration of mercury (25 pM HgT, 5 pM methylmercury) was measured in the near bottom, quasi-anoxic water of the Gdañsk Deep and explained by the release of mercury from fine grained sediments covering the bottom. In the sediments, the largest contents of HgT were found in fine grained,

"Baltic" myoclonus epilepsy: hereditary disorder of childhood made worse by phenytoin.

A survey of 15 families in the USA with Baltic myoclonus epilepsy showed that the 27 individuals who were affected had the following clinical picture from about the age of 10: photosensitive, occasionally violent, myoclonus, usually worse upon waking; generalised tonic-clonic seizures, sometimes associated with absence attacks; and light-sensitive, generally synchronous, spike-and-wave discharges on EEG that preceded clinical manifestations. Necropsy revealed marked loss of Purkinje cells of the cerebellum, but no inclusion bodies. Since the disease was confined to sibs and consanguinity was p

[Innovations from the Baltic Sea region: Nils Alwall, Lembit Norviit, Adolfs Martins Steins and the artificial kidney].

In connection with the construction of one of the first practical dialysis machines, medical historians emphasize the work of the Swedish physician Nils Alwall. Together with his colleagues, he developed a device in the 1940s that could implement the combination of dialysis and ultrafiltration with membranes (cellophane tubes). Little known is the involvement of the physicians Lembit Norviit from Estonia and Adolfs Martins Steins from Latvia, both coauthors of the influential research article Clinical extracorporeal dialysis of blood with artificial kidney that was published in The Lancet in 1

Mercury bonds with carbon (OC and EC) in small aerosols (PM1) in the urbanized coastal zone of the Gulf of Gdansk (southern Baltic).

PM1 aerosols were collected at the coastal station in Gdynia between 1st January and 31st December 2012. The main purpose of the study was to determine the variability in concentrations of mercury Hg(p), organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in PM1 aerosols under varying synoptic conditions in heating and non-heating periods. Additionally, sources of origin and bonds of mercury with carbon species were identified. The highest concentrations of Hg(p), OC and EC were found during the heating period. Then all analyzed PM1 components had a common, local origin related to the consumption of
