Complimentary Addictions: Pharmaceutical Experimentalism and the Problem of Recovery in Baltimore.

In Baltimore, clients in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) experiment with prescription medicine and in doing so face new risks of noncompliance as they tread this blurry line between medical and illegal. This can potentially lead to suspension from drug treatment programs, resulting in clients finding the next most suitable treatment center to enroll into. I argue that the close interaction between drug treatment centers and illegal markets results in new pharmaceutical dependencies, forms of self-care as well as suspicions toward, but also among clients, about their intentions to recover

Determinants of fetal exposure to polyfluoroalkyl compounds in Baltimore, Maryland.

Polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs), such as perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), are ubiquitous, man-made chemicals. Human data suggest that in utero exposures to these chemicals occur and some evidence of developmental toxicity in animals exists. To assess the distribution and determinants of fetal exposure to PFCs, we analyzed cord serum samples from 299 singleton newborns delivered between 2004 and 2005 in Baltimore, MD for 10 PFCs by employing on-line solid-phase extraction coupled with reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Nitrite inhalants: patterns of abuse in Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

Nitrite inhalants, as drugs of abuse, have received a new prominence in the literature since their use has been associated with Kaposi's Sarcoma and possibly other manifestations of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Changes in patterns and prevalence of use have not been investigated since the onset of the AIDS epidemic. We have examined the abuse patterns of nitrite inhalants (poppers) in several different groups. The use of poppers among drug abusers in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. metropolitan area has remained constant over the past 5 years, with the prevalence of use being appr

Civic Engagement, Positive Organizational Sentiment, and Health in Baltimore, Maryland.

While the presence of organizations in neighborhoods has been widely studied, studies have generally not considered whether sentiment toward neighborhood organizations might be associated with public health. Neglecting this affective dimension of organizations limits our grasp on the influence of organizations on processes that mitigate or exacerbate health disparities. We used the 2023 Baltimore Area Survey (weighted n = 1,135,389 adults) to assess whether respondents viewed nearby businesses, nearby nonprofits, and local government positively and whether "positive organization sentiment" was

Police violence among people who inject drugs in Baltimore, Maryland.

BACKGROUND: Police violence is a deleterious public health and criminal justice issue that disproportionately affects people who inject drugs (PWID). Studies documenting the prevalence and correlates of physical police violence in this population are rare. The aim of this study was to examine the correlates of past year physical police violence among an urban sample of PWID. METHODS: PWID participating in the 2015 wave of the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) system in Baltimore City, Maryland, completed a socio-behavioral survey. Multivariable logistic regression was used to detect

Exotic Dance in Baltimore: From Entry to STI/HIV Risk.

Research has documented health risks associated with sex work, but few U.S. studies have focused on the exotic dance industry. We undertook this study to describe the factors that influenced women's entry into exotic dance and explored the relation of these forces to their subsequent sexually transmitted infection (STI)/HIV risk trajectory. Qualitative interviews (N = 25) were conducted with female exotic dancers from June through August 2009. Data were analyzed through Atlas-ti using an inductive approach. Economic vulnerability was the primary force behind women's initiation into the profess

Mortality in the Baltimore union poultry cohort: non-malignant diseases.

BACKGROUND: Workers in poultry plants have high exposure to a variety of transmissible agents present in poultry and their products. Subjects in the general population are also exposed. It is not known whether many of these agents cause disease in humans. If they do, we reason this would be readily evident in a highly exposed group such as poultry workers. We report here on mortality from non-malignant diseases in a cohort of poultry workers. METHODS: Mortality was compared with that of the US general population, and with that of a comparison group from the same union. Risk was estimated by s

Nonstructured treatment interruptions among injection drug users in Baltimore, MD.

BACKGROUND: We characterized patterns of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) use and predictors of nonstructured treatment interruptions (NTIs) among injection drug users (IDUs) in Baltimore, MD. METHODS: Three hundred thirty-five IDUs who initiated HAART from 1996 to 2006 were studied. NTIs were defined as any subsequent 6-month interval where HAART was not reported. Predictors of the first NTI and subsequent restart of HAART were examined using Cox regression. RESULTS: Two hundred sixty (78%) reported > or =1 NTI. Of 215 with > or =1 follow-up visit after the NTI, 44 (20%) never r

Outbreak of primary and secondary syphilis--Baltimore City, Maryland, 1995.

From 1993 to 1995, the number of primary and secondary syphilis cases reported in Baltimore City (1990 population: 736,014) increased 97%, from 179 to 352 cases per year (Figure 1). To identify potential reasons for this increase, CDC, in collaboration with the Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) and the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, analyzed data about primary and secondary syphilis cases during 1992-1995 and about temporal trends in factors that may affect syphilis rates (e.g., partner-notification results, access to medical care, and community illicit-drug use). Baltimore City Health Department: 200 years of progress and partnership.

The Baltimore City Health Department began its long history of protecting the health of Baltimore citizens in 1793. An outbreak of yellow fever in Fells Point on the northwest branch of the Patapsco River was the impetus for the governor's appointment of the first two health officers. Since that time, the health department has worked closely with the medical community to promote education and preventive measures (e.g., sewer systems, water chlorination, food inspection) in order to stop the spread of communicable diseases. For 200 years, the Baltimore City Health Department has provided "the a

Geographic identification of high gonorrhea transmission areas in Baltimore, Maryland.

Geographic approaches to sexually transmitted infection (STI) research frequently seek to identify areas where outreach STI testing may most effectively interrupt continued transmission of STIs. Many of the studies are limited, however, in that they fail to control for racial/ethnic composition of the high prevalence areas. These studies thus may be merely identifying the broader sexual networks of the high morbidity population and not the high transmission networks within them. Cluster detection analysis may be an appropriate approach to identify critical STI disease transmission locations. T

Antifreeze (ethylene glycol) intoxications in Baltimore. Report of six cases.

Records of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) for the State of Maryland were reviewed for all deaths related to acute ingestion of antifreeze (ethylene glycol [EG]) occurring between December 1985 and December 1987. Six cases were identified. In three cases, the manner of death was classified as undetermined, in two suicide, and in one case the intoxication was considered to have contributed to death, but was not the main cause. Clinically, the hospitalized subjects exhibited primary metabolic acidosis with hypocalcemia, hyperglycemia, and an elevated anion and osmolar gap. At aut

Community Testing and SARS-CoV-2 Rates for Latinxs in Baltimore.

INTRODUCTION: Latinxs have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. Latinx immigrants, in particular, face significant barriers to SARS-CoV-2 testing, including lack of insurance, language barriers, stigma, work conflicts, and limited transportation. METHODS: In response to a disproportionately high SARS-CoV-2 positivity rate among Latinxs at the Johns Hopkins Health System, investigators implemented free community-based testing by partnering with religious leaders and leveraging the skill of trusted community health workers. Data were extracted from the electronic health record and a Re

Sold as Heroin: Perceptions and Use of an Evolving Drug in Baltimore, MD.

Since 2001, heroin-related overdose deaths in the United States have risen six-fold, a rise unaccounted for by the expanding user population. Has heroin become a more dangerous drug? Reports of fentanyl and its analogs, often concealed in or sold as heroin, have also increased sharply. This article investigates heroin injectors' perceptions and experiences of changes in the heroin supply in the East Coast city of Baltimore, Maryland, currently facing an epidemic in heroin- and fentanyl-related overdose deaths. Unusually, Baltimore's heroin market is divided between two types: "Raw," believed t

Improvements to lawn and garden equipment emissions estimates for Baltimore, Maryland.

Lawn and garden equipment are a significant source of emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other pollutants in suburban and urban areas. Emission estimates for this source category are typically prepared using default equipment populations and activity data contained in emissions models such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) NONROAD model or the California Air Resources Board's (CARB) OFFROAD model. Although such default data may represent national or state averages, these data are unlikely to reflect regional or local differences in equipment usage patterns bec
