BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery is becoming increasingly common and postoperative patients often present to the emergency department (ED) with complications. We sought to describe the presenting complaints, management, and outcomes of postoperative bariatric surgery patients seen in the ED.
METHODS: We conducted a health records review of 300 consecutive postoperative Roux-en-Y bypass surgery patients who presented to two tertiary care EDs of a major bariatric surgery center within one year of surgery. Cases were identified using a data analytic tool, and two evaluators abstracted clinical vari

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) incidence and progression. We examined whether bariatric surgery is associated with change in eGFR trajectory among patients with and without CKD.
METHODS: Patients who underwent bariatric surgery at two health systems were identified using ICD-9/ICD-10 and CPT codes. Linear mixed models were fit on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) trajectory pre- and post-surgery among patients with or without CKD. Models were adjusted for age, sex, race, ethnicity, body mass index, hypertension, diabetes, follow-up duration, an

Obesity in women, a global issue, is being widely managed with bariatric surgery worldwide. According to recommended guidelines, pregnancy should be avoided for 12 to 24 months following surgery due to various risks. We assessed if surgery-to-conception time has a relation with pregnancy outcomes taking into account gestational weight gain. A cohort study between 2015 and 2019 followed-up pregnancies after various types of bariatric surgeries performed (e.g. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric banding, gastric bypass with Roux-en-Y gastroenterostomy) in Tawam Hospital, Al Ain

PURPOSE: The rapid development of technological tools to record data allows storage of enormous datasets, often termed "big data". In the USA, three large databases have been developed to store data regarding surgical outcomes: the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS-NSQIP), the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) National Inpatient Sample (NIS) and the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). We aimed to evaluate the clinical impact of studies found in these databases concerning outcomes of

BACKGROUND: Over 78 million American adults have obesity. Bariatric surgery is the leading means of durable weight loss. Nutritional deficiencies are commonly treated post-operatively but are often undiagnosed pre-operatively. Malnutrition is correlated with adverse surgical outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to assess pre-operative nutritional status in our bariatric surgery candidates in a cross-sectional study.
METHODS: We recruited 58 bariatric candidates approved to undergo the Roux-en Y gastric bypass. Nutritional status was determined for vitamins A, B12, D, E-α, and E-β/γ

More than one-third of adults in the USA have obesity, which causes, exacerbates or adversely impacts numerous medical comorbidities, including diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Despite intensive lifestyle modifications, the disease severity warrants further aggressive intervention, including pharmacotherapy, medical devices and bariatric surgery. Noninvasive anti-obesity drugs have thus now resurfaced as targeted adjunctive therapeutic approaches to intensive lifestyle intervention, bridging the gap between lifestyle and bariatric surgery. In this Review, we discuss FDA-approved a

INTRODUCTION: As the number of bariatric surgeries has increased, so has the demand for post-bariatric abdominoplasty. The aim of this study was to describe a new approach to anchor-line abdominoplasty for the treatment of post-bariatric surgery patients.
METHODS: This prospective, longitudinal, single-center study was conducted with 20 women, 23-47 years of age, with a body mass index < 30 kg/m2, who had undergone gastroplasty. The vertical amount of tissue to be excised was estimated preoperatively by the pinch test. The amount of tissue to be removed by transverse resection was determined

BACKGROUND: Body contouring surgery (BCS) addresses excess skin following significant weight loss. While bariatric surgery has been the primary intervention for massive weight loss, the rise of GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) introduces a new patient population seeking BCS. Limited data exists on how GLP-1 RA-associated weight loss impacts BCS timing, procedure preferences, and complication rates.
METHODS: This retrospective study used the TriNetX database to identify adults who underwent BCS following bariatric surgery or long-term GLP-1 RA therapy (≥6 prescriptions). Propensity score ma

INTRODUCTION: One of the major complications of applying a prosthetic device to facilitate gastric partitioning has been intraluminal erosion of the prosthesis. Removing an eroded gastric band is fraught with difficulty secondary to the extensive inflammatory response around the proximal stomach and left lobe of the liver. As a result, bariatric clinicians have attempted to apply endoscopic technology to facilitate removal of eroded gastric prostheses. Our study reports on our experience of applying endoscopic scissor transection to remove eroded gastric prostheses in a large tertiary-care med

The use of sympathomimetic appetite suppressants and serotonin-selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) has been questioned due to anecdotal reports of serotonin syndrome. This survey of bariatric physicians using these medications in clinical practice did not find any cases of serotonin syndrome among 1174 patients. The monitored use of the combination of these medicines by trained practitioners is justifiable.

Scientific literature has investigated and well-documented the complex relationship between obesity and cardiovascular diseases. Obese people are much more likely to have atrial fibrillation, dyslipidemia, diabetes, and coronary artery disease, among other cardiovascular conditions. Additionally, obesity poses a severe risk for diseases like hypertension, heart failure, and atherosclerotic heart diseases, affecting various aspects relating to their underlying mechanisms, diagnosis, and clinical effects. This article summarizes recent developments in our understanding of and response to obesity

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, we have to face the fact that the Web represents one of the most important sources of information for patients. Postbariatric patients in particular are usually very motivated, and they are enthusiastic users of the Web as a source of information on the different types of surgery they could undergo after their weight loss in order to reshape and remodel their body thus regaining physical and functional wellness and dignity. The aim of the study was to assess information on the four most commonly performed postbariatric procedures worldwide, tummy tuck, breast, arm and thi

The generally negative impact of obesity on female sexuality is well-established. The possible association between bariatric surgery, weight loss, and female sexuality is much less described. The aim of the study was to analyse the possible association between bariatric surgery and female sexual function. It was a cross-sectional study of 623 patients who underwent bariatric surgery between 1999 and 2017. Patients were recruited on the basis of medical records from the Military Institute of Medicine in Warsaw. Patients were invited to complete a questionnaire which consisted of self-designed d

INTRODUCTION: Bariatric surgery is considered the most effective tool in the control and treatment of severe obesity, but patients undergoing this procedure are at increased risk of developing nutritional deficiencies by limiting the intake and absorption of many nutrients.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of vitamin D deficiency and calcium in bone in patients after gastric bypass in Roux-en-Y, pointing directly at the type of administration, doses and effects after surgery.
METHOD: Was conducted a systematic review with articles related to the topic of the last 10 years searched in PubMed (

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Bariatric (or metabolic) surgery is the most effective treatment for severe obesity, resulting in sustained weight loss and rapid improvement in metabolic outcomes. However, it is currently unknown what molecular changes are induced by the surgery, how they relate to the health improvements, how early they occur, and whether they are maintained over time.
SUBJECTS/METHODS: In this study, we characterised early gene expression changes following surgery in blood samples from the 'Personalised Medicine for Morbid Obesity' cohort.
RESULTS: We observed widespread changes in

With the increase in obesity prevalence, a noticeable increase in bariatric surgeries has been reported in national and international statistics. Therefore, body contouring surgeries have increased to help individuals achieve their desired body shape. Plastic surgeons need to consider potential hematologic complications that may occur in this specific group of patients before performing body contouring surgery. This review illustrates the perioperative medical, laboratory, and management strategies needed to minimize blood loss and blood transfusion requirements during body contouring. Using G

We report a case of a 72-year-old woman who developed recurrent abdominal laparotomy wound dehiscence and infection following a hepatico-jejunostomy. Her surgical history included a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) that was carried out 11 years ago. Upon further assessment in the current admission, she was found to be deficient in both selenium and zinc. Daily multivitamin and mineral tablets and a nutritional supplement drink were prescribed to address her deficiencies. After 2 months of supplementation, the laparotomy wound had made significant healing progress and no further surgical input w
