The effect of oral contraceptive agents on the basal metabolic rate of young women.

The use of oral contraceptive agents by women may be a factor that contributes to the observed inter-individual variability in the BMR. We, therefore, measured the BMR, body build and composition in two groups of young women and also assessed their self-reported level of physical activity. One group had been using oral contraceptive agents for a period of 6 months or more (OCA, n 24), while the other group had never used oral contraceptives (NOCA, n 22). There were no significant differences in age, body build or composition. The absolute BMR in the groups were not significantly different when

Intraindividual variation in the basal metabolic rate of women: Effect of the menstrual cycle.

The validity of using the basal metabolic rate (BMR) to calculate an individual's energy requirements is based upon the assumption that the intraindividual variation in BMR is small. Early studies (pre-1940) on BMR in women had shown that the menstrual cycle may have a profound effect, contributing to high levels of intraindividual variation. To investigate this issue further, and to explore whether BMR is indeed a biological constant in women, sequential measurements of BMR were made in women over one menstrual cycle. Two independent studies were undertaken in which the BMR of 12 weight-stabl

Effect of basal metabolic rate on rheumatoid arthritis: a Mendelian randomization study.

PURPOSE: Basal metabolic rate (BMR) as one of the most basic and significant indicators of metabolism has been associated with human health. Previous studies showed that the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is linked to BMR; however, the causal relationship between BMR and RA is unknown. Thus, we aimed to explore the causal relationship between BMR and RA as well as RA-related factors. METHODS: Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed on collected genome-wide association studies information. The effect of horizontal pleiotropy was detected by MR-PRESSO and MR-Radial. Five M

Basal ganglia calcification in hypoparathyroidism and pseudohypoparathyroidism: local and systemic metabolic mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Hypoparathyroidism and pseudohypoparathyroidism are rare disorders of mineral metabolism which may be associated with soft tissue calcification in the basal ganglia in the brain, and occasionally the skin and other tissues. The basal ganglia are the most common sites of calcification in the central nervous system in these disorders, and were first associated with this manifestation in a report from the Mayo Clinic in 1939. The reasons why the basal ganglia are a common site of soft tissue calcification in these rare disorders has been a matter of investigation for many years. FIND

Metabolic and electrophysiological changes in the basal ganglia of transgenic Huntington's disease rats.

Huntington's disease (HD) is characterized by neuronal loss in the striatum, ultimately leading to an 'imbalance' in the electrical activity of the basal ganglia-thalamocortical circuits. To restore this 'imbalance' in HD patients, which is held responsible for (some) of the motor symptoms, different basal ganglia nuclei have been targeted for surgical therapies, such as ablative surgery and deep brain stimulation. However, evidence to target brain nuclei for surgical therapies in HD is lacking. We reasoned that a neuronal and metabolic mapping of the basal ganglia nuclei could identify a func

Reductions in basal metabolic rate and physical activity contribute to hypothalamic obesity.

CONTEXT: Obesity after hypothalamic damage is often severe and resistant to lifestyle changes. It is postulated that differences in basal metabolic rate (BMR) and physical activity may contribute to hypothalamic obesity (HO). OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to investigate the role of energy expenditure, BMR, and physical activity in the etiology of hypothalamic obesity. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study of three groups of children: those with HO, congenital hypopituitarism (CH), and simple obesity (SO). RESULTS: A total of 47 children (HO = 18, CH = 13, and SO = 16) had BMR measured, us

Effect of basal ganglia calcification on its glucose metabolism and dopaminergic function in idiopathic hypoparathyroidism.

BACKGROUND: The functional significance of basal ganglia calcification (BGC) in idiopathic hypoparathyroidism (IH) is not clear. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of BGC on glucose metabolism and dopaminergic function in IH. METHODS: (18) F-FDG and (99m) Tc-TRODAT-1 nuclear imaging were performed in 35 IH patients with (n = 26) and without (n = 9) BGC. Controls were subjects without hypoparathyroidism or BGC (nine for (18) F-FDG and 12 for (99m) Tc-TRODAT-1). Relationship of the glucose metabolism and dopaminergic function was assessed with the neuropsychological and biochemical abnormalities.

Substrate metabolism during basal and hyperinsulinemic conditions in adolescents and young-adults with Barth syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Barth syndrome (BTHS) is a rare X-linked disorder that is characterized by mitochondrial abnormalities, infantile or childhood onset of cardioskeletal myopathy, and high mortality rates. It is currently unknown if BTHS related mitochondrial dysfunction results in substrate metabolism abnormalities and thereby contributes to cardioskeletal myopathy in patients with BTHS. METHODS: Adolescents and young adults with BTHS (n = 5, 20 ± 4 yrs) and age and activity matched healthy controls (n = 5, 18 ± 4 yrs) underwent an hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp procedure with stable isotopicall

Whole body and forearm substrate metabolism in hyperthyroidism: evidence of increased basal muscle protein breakdown.

Thyroid hormones have significant metabolic effects, and muscle wasting and weakness are prominent clinical features of chronic hyperthyroidism. To assess the underlying mechanisms, we examined seven hyperthyroid women with Graves' disease before (Ht) and after (Eut) medical treatment and seven control subjects (Ctr). All subjects underwent a 3-h study in the postabsorptive state. After regional catheterization, protein dynamics of the whole body and of the forearm muscles were measured by amino acid tracer dilution technique using [15N]phenylalanine and [2H4]tyrosine. Before treatment, triiod

Basal PPARα inhibits bile acid metabolism adaptation in chronic cholestatic model induced by α-naphthylisothiocyanate.

Cholestasis is one of the most challenging diseases to be treated in current hepatology. However little is known about the adaptation difference and the underlying mechanism between acute and chronic cholestasis. In this study, wild-type and Pparα-null mice were orally administered diet containing 0.05% ANIT to induce chronic cholestasis. Biochemistry, histopathology and serum metabolome analysis exhibited the similar toxic phenotype between wild-type and Pparα-null mice. Bile acid metabolism was strongly adapted in Pparα-null mice but not in wild-type mice. The Shp and Fxr mRNA was found to b

Basal- and insulin-stimulated substrate metabolism in patients with active acromegaly before and after adenomectomy.

Active acromegaly is characterized by inappropriate tissue growth, increased mortality, and perturbations of intermediary metabolism. It is, in general, not well described to which extent these disturbances are normalized after treatment of the disease. To further assess basal and insulin stimulated fuel metabolism in acromegaly six patients with monotropic GH excess were each studied approximately 1 month prior to and 2 months after successful selective pituitary adenomectomy and compared to a control population of seven subjects. The studies consisted of a 3-h basal postabsorptive period and

Association between basal metabolic rate and cardio-metabolic risk factors: Evidence from a Mendelian Randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Cardio-metabolic risk factors play a crucial role in the development of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is a fundamental physiological parameter that affects energy expenditure and might contribute to variations in these risk factors. However, the exact relationship between BMR and cardio-metabolic risk factors has remained unclear. METHODS: We employed Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis to explore the association between BMR (N: 534,045) and various cardio-metabolic risk factors, including body mass index (BMI, N: 681,275), fasting glucose (N:

Genetically predicted basal metabolic rate and infectious diseases: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: The causal relationship between basal metabolic rate (BMR) and infectious diseases remains elusive. This study aims to clarify this association. METHODS: This study analyzed genome-wide association studies (GWASs) data from the UK Biobank and FinnGen cohorts to investigate the association between BMR and infectious diseases in European populations. Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was initially employed, followed by multivariable Mendelian randomization (MVMR) to account for potential confounders. Mediation analysis further confirmed significant relationships. Sensitivity ana
