Honey bee gut microbiome studies have primarily emphasized bacteria, leaving fungal communities comparatively overlooked despite their ecological and functional importance. Whole-genome shotgun metagenomics of Apis cerana and Apis mellifera revealed fungal assemblages dominated by Ascomycota, with Basidiomycota and Microsporidia in minor proportions, alongside gut bacterial communities composed mainly of Pseudomonadota, Bacillota, and Actinomycetota. The bacterial diversity was markedly higher in A. mellifera (Shannon = 5.90; Simpson = 0.98) than in A. cerana (Shannon = 4.01; Simpson = 0.94; p

A 73-year-old Japanese man with a medical history of sarcoidosis was diagnosed with meningitis caused by an undetermined fungus. For further identification, the cerebrospinal fluid sample was analyzed for the rDNA internally transcribed spacer regions, and the fungus was identified as Irpex lacteus. I. lacteus is classified under phylum Basidiomycota and is a wood-rotting bracket mushroom. Although there is no standard treatment regimen for I. lacteus infections, amphotericin B was effective in this patient. Herein, we present, to our knowledge, the first reported case of fungal meningitis cau

Gaseous emissions (i.e., CO2, CH4, NH3, N2O) pose significant environmental pollutions during manure storage. Plant-derived tannins exhibit properties conducive to microbial modulation through protein-binding and metabolic pathway inhibition, offering potential for mitigating these emissions. This study evaluated wood-derived tannic acids as sustainable microbial modulators for the synergistic mitigation of NH3 and greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions during liquid chicken manure storage. Four treatments were established: CK (control, no additive), CT (0.5 % condensed tannin), HT (0.5 % hydrolyza

Fungal adenylyl cyclase (AC) converts adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to the second messenger 3',5'-cyclic AMP (cAMP). Class III ACs contain multiple domains, including the adenylyl cyclase domain and a leucine-rich repeat domain (LRR), through which multiple signals are integrated into the cAMP-Protein Kinase A (PKA) signaling response. This review focuses on the sequences and structural features of the LRR domains. To this end, we analyzed LRR domain sequences from ACs in the phyla Ascomycota, Mucoromycota, Basidiomycota, Blastocladiomycota, Zoopagomycota, and Chytridiomycota. Protein structure

INTRODUCTION: Fungal microbiota's involvement in the pathogenesis of Crohn's disease (CD) is incompletely understood. The terminal ileum is a predilection site both for primary involvement and recurrences of CD. We, therefore, assessed the mucosa-associated mycobiota in the inflamed and non-inflamed ileum in patients with CD.
METHODS: The mucosa-associated mycobiota was assessed by ITS2 sequencing in a total of 168 biopsies sampled 5 and 15 cm proximal of the ileocecal valve or ileocolic anastomosis in 44 CD patients and 40 healthy controls (HC). CD patients with terminal ileitis, with endosc

The fruit body and in particular the gleba development of several species of Lycoperdaceae has been examined by light microscopic analysis of microtome sections of fruit body primordia in different ontogenetic stages. The gleba of Langermannia gigantea develops in a unique and previously unknown manner: the hymenium-forming palisade structures are borne on fan-like branches of hyphae. Hence the term of flabelloid glebal development is introduced. The other genera of Lycoperdaceae, including the genus Calvatia, are characterized by both lacunar and coralloid development of the gleba. Because th

In nature, hyphal growth of Ustilago maydis is strictly coupled to plant infection and initiated after mating of two genetically compatible yeast cells on the plant surface. Compatibility is defined by mating type loci: the biallelic a locus mediates recognition and fusion through a pheromone/receptor system, whereas the multiallelic b locus, encoding transcription factor subunits bEast (bE) and bWest (bW), establishes and maintains the dikaryotic hypha controlled via the assembly of compatible subunits into active heterodimers after plasmogamy. The laboratory strain AB33 enables a controlled

The impacts of microwave assisted-extraction (MAE) on the physicochemical characteristics, functionalities, and digestion behavior of Lactarius volemus (L. volemus) protein isolate (LPIs) was investigated. Compared with the conventional water bath assisted-extraction method (WAE), MAE significantly enhanced the extraction rate of LPIs by 30.00% and 47.98% at 20 and 60 min, respectively. Also, MAE unfolded the spatial structure of LPIs, promoting the transformation from ordered structure to disordered structure, exposing its hydrophobic groups and increasing free sulfhydryl content. In addition

The gut mycobiota (fungal microbiota) plays a crucial role in the immune system, potentially impacting autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Despite growing interest, data on intestinal fungi in SLE remain limited. This study thereby investigated the human-mimicked (mice) gut mycobiome and quantitative gut mycobiome analyses using universal fungal internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) DNA next generation sequencing and real-time PCR, tracking time-series dynamics from preclinical to established SLE conditions in two SLE-prone mouse models. These models included pristan

Although the influence of environmental factors on the microbial community in water sources is crucial, it is seldom evaluated. The seasonal relationship between microbial diversity of bacteria and fungi and environmental factors was investigated in a large drinking-water reservoir using Illumina MiSeq sequencing. Forty-one bacterial phyla and nine fungal phyla were analyzed in the Qingcaosha Reservoir, Shanghai, China. The predominant bacterial phyla were Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Cyanobacteria, with the maximum relative abundance of 46%, 36.6%, 16.1%, and 14.9%, resp

Fomes weberianus Bres. & Henn. ex Sacc. is currently the basionym of two very distinct polypores (Basidiomycota), Ganoderma weberianum (Polyporales) and Phylloporia weberiana (Hymenochaetales). This fact has led to almost fifty years of taxonomic confusion. Fomes weberianus was first lectotypified by Steyaert, who accepted the species as G. weberianum. However, studies of Weber's original material in B, duplicate material in S, the protologue, and early interpretations of the name have shown that Steyaert's choice conflicts with the protologue and early interpretations, and that his interpreta

Endophytic microbes are plant-associated microorganisms that reside in the interior tissue of plants without causing damage to the host plant. Endophytic microbes can boost the availability of nutrient for plant by using a variety of mechanisms such as fixing nitrogen, solubilizing phosphorus, potassium, and zinc, and producing siderophores, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, and phytohormones that help plant for growth and protection against various abiotic and biotic stresses. The microbial endophytes have attained the mechanism of producing various hydrolytic enzymes such as cellulase, pectinase, x

Glucuronoxylomannan (GXM) participates in several immunoregulatory mechanisms, which makes it an important Cryptococcus virulence factor that is essential for the disease. Trichosporon asahii and Trichosporon mucoides share with Cryptococcus species the ability to produce GXM. To check whether other opportunistic species in the Trichosporonaceae family produce GXM-like polysaccharides, extracts from 28 strains were produced from solid cultures and their carbohydrate content evaluated by the sulfuric acid / phenol method. Moreover, extracts were assessed for cryptococcal GXM cross-reactivity th

BACKGROUND: Anaerobic fungi are effective fibre-degrading microorganisms in the digestive tract of horses. However, our understanding of their diversity and community structure is limited, especially in different parts of the gastrointestinal tract.
RESULTS: For the first time, high-throughput sequencing technology was used to analyse and predict fungal microbial diversity in different parts of the gastrointestinal tract of Mongolian horses. The results revealed that the richness and diversity of fungi in the hindgut of Mongolian horses were much higher than those in the foregut. The foregut

Secondary metabolites produced by Ustilago maydis, like mannosylerythritol lipids and ustilagic acid, are usually secreted together, leading to a glycolipid mixture. This makes it difficult to distinguish which compounds are present in the mixture or not. Here, a simple and fast approach for analysis of mannosylerythritol lipids and ustilagic acid using thin-layer chromatography is shown, enabling the separation and visualization of those from the mixture. A step-by-step protocol from the induction of such glycolipid synthesis in U. maydis over the isolation and their separation via thin-layer
