BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a new type of extracorporeal respiratory and circulatory assistance device. It can drain venous blood out of the body and inject it into veins or arteries after being oxygenated by an oxygenator (membrane lung) to replace lung and heart functions in a short time. ECMO can provide tissue blood perfusion and gas exchange almost equivalent to cardiac output and extend the effective treatment time window for patients with acute circulatory failure to restore cardiopulmonary function.

Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy (ETV) is a minimally invasive and safe method used in the treatment of obstructive hydrocephalus. However, arterial bleeding episodes that arise from narrowing of the safe perforation area due to a higher location of the basilar artery (BA) may have tragic consequences. Liliequist membrane (LM) or other membranous structures located in the prepontine cistern also affect the success rates with ETV and complicate the procedure. We present herein a safe and successful perforation of the thick LM after retracting BA in a triventricular hydrocephalus case having a h

The cochlear basilar membrane (CBM) contains inner hair cells and outer hair cells that convert sound waves into electrical signals and transmit them to the central auditory system. Cochlear aging, the primary reason of age-related hearing loss, can reduce the signal transmission capacity. There is no ideal in vitro aging model of the CBM. In this study, we cultured the CBM, which was dissected from the cochlea of the C57BL/6 mice 5 days after birth, in a medium containing 20 mg/mL, 40 mg/mL, or 60 mg/mL D-galactose (D-gal). Compared with the control group, the levels of senescence-associated

The mechanical function of the basilar membrane (BM) in the mammalian cochlea has been newly debated after the discovery of frequency selectivity of single hair cells. Decisive information on this matter can be expected from hydropic ears, since hydrops presumably alters cochlear mechanics by (1) impeding BM motion and (2) uncoupling outer hair cell (OHC) stereocilia from the tectorial membrane (TM). Therefore hearing in Menière's disease (MD) was examined analysing data on epidemiology of MD types and audiogram types, 2f thresholds, over-recruitment, loudness intolerance, and otoacoustic emis

INTRODUCTION: Inflammaging is a key mechanism in presbycusis. CX3CL1-CX3CR1 pathway is critical for cochlear macrophage-hair cell cross-talk. However, its role in inflammaging remains unclear.
METHODS: To investigate the role of CX3CL1-CX3CR1 signaling in cochlear inflammaging, single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data from young and aged mouse cochleae were analyzed to map CX3CL1-CX3CR1 distribution and aging-related trends. Findings were validated with immunofluorescence, real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and Western blot. A migration assay assessed CX3CL1-CX3CR1's influen

The immune response is an important component of the cochlear response to stress. As an important player in the cochlear immune system, the basilar membrane immune cells reside on the surface of the scala tympani side of the basilar membrane. At present, the immune cell properties in this region and their responses to stress are not well understood. Here, we investigated the functional role of these immune cells in the immune response to acoustic overstimulation. This study reveals that tissue macrophages are present in the entire length of the basilar membrane under steady-state conditions. N

Changes in Ca(++)-adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activity in the plasma membrane of smooth-muscle cells in the basilar arteries of dogs with experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) were examined. The study methods included electron microscopic histochemistry and bioassay of the enzyme that exports cytoplasmic Ca++ to extracellular spaces. The Ca(++)-ATPase activity in the basilar artery increased significantly in response to the application of vasoconstrictive agents (prostaglandin F2 alpha and a phorbol ester), but decreased significantly 24 hours after experimental SAH, inversely with

1. Endothelium-dependent hyperpolarization of smooth muscle cells in isolated, pre-contracted segments of rabbit basilar artery in response to acetylcholine (100 microM) was abolished in the presence of glibenclamide (10 microM). 2. Acetylcholine-evoked relaxation was unaffected by either glibenclamide or 65 mM potassium chloride, indicating that the change in membrane potential did not form an essential component of relaxation and that high concentrations of potassium did not inhibit the release or action of endothelium-derived relaxing factor in this vessel. 3. Saturated solutions of nitric

BACKGROUND: The pathological hallmark of Ménière's disease is endolymphatic hydrops, which can lead to an increase in basilar membrane stiffness and, consequently, an acceleration of the traveling wave of sound. The cochlear hydrops analysis masking procedure (CHAMP), which is an auditory brainstem response test masked at various frequencies with high-pass noise masking, uses the principle of the traveling wave velocity theory to determine the presence of endolymphatic hydrops.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to review the previous results of the CHAMP, expound the principles and key indicators, an

We have used the guinea pig isolated temporal bone preparation to investigate changes in the non-linear properties of the tone-evoked cochlear potentials during reversible step displacements of the basilar membrane towards either the scala tympani or the scala vestibuli. The position shifts were produced by changing the hydrostatic pressure in the scala tympani. The pressures involved were calculated from measurements of the fluid flow through the system, and the cochlear DC impedance calculated (1.5 x 10(11) kg m-4 s-1, n = 10). Confocal microscopic visualization of the organ of Corti showed

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is primarily attributed to inner-ear factors, yet the role of age-related middle ear characteristics remains elusive. Employing a finite element (FE) model, we conducted a comparative analysis with clinical data extracted from a retrospective cohort study involving 90 younger adults (mean age = 38.1 ± 7.7) and 111 older adults (mean age = 63.8 ± 8.4). The clinical dataset encompassed air-bone gap (ABG) measurements obtained through pure-tone audiometry (PTA) at frequencies of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 kHz. FE results quantified the normalized stapes displacement va

Miniature high frequency ultrasound devices show promise as tools for clinical middle ear and basal cochlea imaging and vibrometry. However, before clinical use it is important to verify that the ultrasound exposure does not damage the cochlea. In this initial study, electrophysiological responses of the cochlea were measured for a range of stimulus frequencies in both ears of anesthetized chinchillas, before and after exposing the organ of Corti region of one ear to pulsed focused ultrasound for 30 min. Measurements were again taken after an 11 day survival period. Cochlear tissue was examine

BACKGROUND: Cerebral vasospasm, a serious complication of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), has been extensively studied for its neurochemical and pathophysiologic mechanisms. However, the contribution of inner elastic membrane dissection and subintimal hemorrhage to basilar artery occlusion remains underexplored. This study investigates inner elastic membrane-related changes in the basilar artery after SAH.
METHODS: Twenty-four hybrid rabbits were divided into control, sham, and SAH groups, with SAH induced by autologous blood injection. After 2 weeks, basilar artery changes, vasospasm indexes

Previous experimental studies of insertion of the Nucleus standard straight and the Contour arrays into the scala tympani have reported that the electrode arrays cause damage to various cochlear structures. However, the level of insertion-induced damage by these electrode arrays to cochlear structures (the spiral ligament, the basilar membrane and the osseous spiral lamina) has not been quantified. Although it has been suggested that rotation can overcome this resistance and prevent the basilar membrane from being pierced by the tip of the Nucleus standard straight array, there has not been an

A hearing sensation arises when the elastic basilar membrane inside the cochlea vibrates. The basilar membrane is typically set into motion through airborne sound that displaces the middle ear and induces a pressure difference across the membrane. A second, alternative pathway exists, however: stimulation of the cochlear bone vibrates the basilar membrane as well. This pathway, referred to as bone conduction, is increasingly used in headphones that bypass the ear canal and the middle ear. Furthermore, otoacoustic emissions, sounds generated inside the cochlea and emitted therefrom, may not inv

When stimulated by tones, the ear appears to emit tones of its own, stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emissions (SFOAEs). SFOAEs were measured in 17 chinchillas and their group delays were compared with a place map of basilar-membrane vibration group delays measured at the characteristic frequency. The map is based on Wiener-kernel analysis of responses to noise of auditory-nerve fibers corroborated by measurements of vibrations at several basilar-membrane sites. SFOAE group delays were similar to, or shorter than, basilar-membrane group delays for frequencies >4 kHz and <4 kHz, respectively. Suc

The normal anatomy of stereociliary tufts in the basilar papilla of the alligator lizard is described and demonstrated with scanning electron micrographs. Stereociliary tufts in the tectorial region differ from those in the free-standing region in several ways. Tectorial stereociliary tufts are short (less than 10 micron in height), unidirectional in orientation, and covered with a tectorial membrane. Free-standing stereociliary tufts are very tall (up to 38 micron in height), bidirectional in orientation and not covered by a tectorial membrane or any other tectorial substance. The heights of

Stimulation of the olivocochlear bundle reduces basilar membrane displacement, driven auditory nerve activity, and compound action potential (CAP) response to acoustic stimulation. These effects were simulated using a computer model of the auditory periphery. The model simulates the medial efferent activity by attenuating the basilar membrane response. The model was evaluated against three animal studies reporting measurements at three levels of the auditory system; basilar membrane, single auditory nerve fibers and whole auditory nerve CAP. The CAP data included conditions where tones were ma

The development of the current concepts is reviewed in historical perspective. Helmholtz's hypothesis of basilar-membrane resonance was partially confirmed and partially defeated by Békésy's experiments on models and postmortem cochlear preparations. He discovered that sound was propagated in the cochlea in the form of traveling waves which reached a flat maximum at a frequency-dependent location. Mathematical theory explained this type of sound propagation as a special case of surface waves. Johnstone and his coworkers discovered that the maximum of cochlear vibration in living animals was mu
