From a survey of the behavior of animals in the wild, in captivity, under the influence of psychoactive drugs and in a model of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), we identify that the behavioral repertoire invariably includes motor rituals, and that such rituals are performed at a few specific locations/objects in the environment with an orderly transition amongst locations/objects. The concept and parameters of this stable organization of rituals in time and space were used to analyze rituals of OCD patients, compared with control individuals performing the same actions (e.g. car locking).

Rationale: The endocannabinoid system is known to be involved in learning, memory, emotional processing and regulation of personality patterns. Here we assessed the endocannabinoid profile in the brains of mice with strong characteristics of social dominance and submissiveness. Methods: A lipidomics approach was employed to assess the endocannabinoidome in the brains of Dominant (Dom) and Submissive (Sub) mice. The endocannabinoid showing the greatest difference in concentration in the brain between the groups, docosatetraenoyl ethanolamine (DEA), was synthesized, and its effects on the physio

Synthetic cathinones are a class of new psychoactive substances with a structure similar to amphetamine drugs, which can produce excitatory effects similar to drugs such as amphetamine and cocaine after being taken. In recent years, the abuse of synthetic cathinones worldwide has become increasingly serious, posing a serious threat to social security and public health. This article focuses on several common synthetic cathinones, collects their research results in animal autonomous activity experiments and drug dependence model experiments and summarizes their relevant experimental conclusions

Human and animal physiology are subject to seasonal, lunar, and circadian rhythms. Although the seasonal and circadian rhythms have been fairly well described, little is known about the effects of the lunar cycle on the behavior and physiology of humans and animals. The lunar cycle has an impact on human reproduction, in particular fertility, menstruation, and birth rate. Melatonin levels appear to correlate with the menstrual cycle. Admittance to hospitals and emergency units because of various causes (cardiovascular and acute coronary events, variceal hemorrhage, diarrhea, urinary retention)

Trichoplax adhaerens is a flat, millimeter-sized marine animal that adheres to surfaces and grazes on algae. Trichoplax displays a repertoire of different feeding behaviors despite the apparent absence of a true nervous system with electrical or chemical synapses. It glides along surfaces to find food, propelled by beating cilia on cells at its ventral surface, and pauses during feeding by arresting ciliary beating. We found that when endomorphin-like peptides are applied to an animal, ciliary beating is arrested, mimicking natural feeding pauses. Antibodies against these neuropeptides label c

Despite repetitive behaviors being a common feature of a number of clinical disorders and ubiquitous in normative development, little attention has been given to their ontogeny or temporal dynamics. We characterized these features in a mouse model of repetitive behavior to identify discrete trajectories of development and developmental changes in temporal dynamics. Three qualitatively distinct trajectory groups were identified which allowed for an examination of the interaction between temporal organization and developmental trajectory. Significant differences in temporal dynamics were found a

AIM: To compare the pharmacological characteristics of 12-chloroscoulerine (CSL) enantiomers to dopamine (DA) receptors.
METHODS: Radioligand receptor binding assay with calf striatum and behavioral tests of mice or rats were used.
RESULTS: In the competitive binding assay, the affinities (Ki) of l-CSL to D1 and D2 receptors were 5.7 nmol.L-1, while those of d-CSL for D1 and D2 receptors were 135 and 9150 nmol.L-1, respectively. The Ki of dl-CSL to D1 and D2 receptors were 8.9 and 9.6 nmol.L-1, respectively, which were slightly weaker than that of l-CSL. In the behavioral experiments, CSL en

Rabbit maternal behavior (MB) impacts meat and fur production on the farm, survival of the species in the wild, and pet welfare. Specific characteristics of rabbit MB (i.e., three-step nest building process; single, brief, daily nursing bout) have been used as models for exploring particular themes in neuroscience, like obsessive-compulsive actions, circadian rhythms, and cognition. Particular hormonal combinations regulate nest building by acting on brain regions controlling MB in other mammals. Nonhormonal factors like type of lodging and the doe's social rank influence nursing and milk prod

Highly expressed in the mammalian brain and widely distributed across the genome, MeCP2 is a key player in recognizing modified DNA and interpreting the epigenetic information encoded in different DNA methylation/hydroxymethylation patterns. Alterations in sequence or copy number of the X-linked human MECP2 gene cause either Rett syndrome (RTT) or MECP2 duplication syndrome. Alterations in MECP2 levels have also been identified in patients with autism. To fully understand the significant role of MECP2 in regulating the development and function of the nervous system, it is important to study al

In pasture-based automatic milking systems (AMS), feed is the main incentive that can be managed to encourage reliable and consistent voluntary and distributed cow traffic. Modifying timing, placement and size of feed allocations is expected to have an effect on cow behavior that could avoid the occurrence of extended milking intervals, which have a negative effect on milk yield. Therefore, behavioral studies provide information on how cows modify their actions under different management regimes and can help explain the impact of those regimes. Behavioral observations were conducted in spring

Since the initial description by Wall [Wall, P.D., 1967. The laminar organization of dorsal horn and effects of descending impulses. J. Neurophysiol. 188, 403-423] of tonic descending inhibitory control of dorsal horn neurons, several studies have aimed to characterize the role of various brain centers in the control of nociceptive input to the spinal cord. The role of brainstem centers in pain inhibition has been well documented over the past four decades. Lesion to peripheral nerves results in hypersensitivity to mild tactile or cold stimuli (allodynia) and exaggerated response to nociceptiv

Stereotypic behaviors are associated with a broad spectrum of developmental, psychiatric, and genetic disorders. Several lines of evidence indicate that these abnormal repetitive behaviors may be expressed as a consequence of imbalanced activity along the direct and indirect processing pathways of the basal ganglia. Because the activity of these two pathways is modulated, in part, by the neuropeptides dynorphin and enkephalin, we sought to determine whether spontaneous and persistent stereotypy is associated with alterations in striatal neuropeptide content. Specifically, the present study emp

Fascin 1 is an actin-bundling protein with limited expression in normal tissues, such as the brain and spleen. Fascin knockout mice exhibit enlarged lateral ventricles and impaired neuronal extension in the posterior region of the anterior commissure. Despite these observations, the effect of fascin loss on animal behavior and cognitive function has not been previously assessed. In the present study, fascin knockout (fascin-/-) and wild-type (fascin+/+) female mice were compared on a number of standard behavioral tests, including open-field, object recognition, elevated plus maze, light-dark t

Schizophrenia (SZ) is a complex neuropsychiatric disorder influenced by genetic and environmental factors, including maternal folic acid (FA) deficiency. This study evaluated whether maternal FA supplementation could prevent behavioral and biochemical alterations in offspring exposed to the Poly(I:C)-induced SZ model, a viral RNA analog (2 mg/kg). Female Wistar rats (n = 48) received at doses FA 5 or 10 mg/kg, or vehicle (control), throughout preconception, gestation, and lactation. After lactation, maternal rats underwent locomotor activity and forced swim tests. Adult offspring were subjecte

Multi-animal pose estimation is a critical technique for enabling fine-grained quantification of group animal behaviors, which holds significant scientific value for uncovering behavioral changes under space environmental factors such as microgravity and radiation. Currently, the China Space Station has conducted a series of space biology experiments involving typical model organisms, including Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), zebrafish, and Drosophila. However, substantial differences in species types, body scales, and posture dynamics among these animals pose serious challenges to the ge

This review discusses efforts to develop rodent models for the study of neurobiological mechanisms underlying chronic alcohol drinking, alcoholism, and abnormal alcohol-seeking behavior. Selective breeding has produced stable lines of rats that reliably exhibit high and (for comparison purposes) low voluntary alcohol consumption. In addition, animal models of chronic ethanol self-administration have been developed in rodents, who do not have a genetic predisposition for high alcohol-seeking behavior, to explore environmental influences in ethanol drinking and the effects of physical dependence

BACKGROUND: Hemiplegia is characterized by muscle weakness on one side of the body, often resulting from damage to the brain, spinal cord, or associated nerves. This condition commonly occurs due to strokes, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), or spinal cord injuries (SCI), which can damage corticospinal neurons (CSNs) and the corticospinal tract (CST). However, there is still a notable lack of comprehensive studies that systematically characterize the anatomical and behavioral aspects of these hemiplegic animal models.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to validate and compare existing models of TBI, s
