Steady-state visual evoked potentials in children with neurofibromatosis type 1: associations with behavioral rating scales and impact of psychostimulant medication.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disorder often associated with cognitive dysfunctions, including a high occurrence of deficits in visuoperceptual skills. The neural underpinnings of these visuoperceptual deficits are not fully understood. We used steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) to investigate possible alterations in the synchronization of neural activity in the occipital cortex of children with NF1. METHODS: SSVEPs were measured using electroencephalography and compared between children with NF1 (n = 28) and neurotypical controls (n = 28) aged between 4

Clinician- versus caregiver-rated scales as outcome measures of repetitive-restricted behaviors in clinical trials of autism: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The agreement between treatment effects measured by clinician- and caregiver-ratings of repetitive-restricted behaviors (RRBs) is important for clinical practice and research but is still unclear. Therefore, we conducted a post-hoc meta-analysis of placebo-controlled randomized-controlled trials (RCTs) investigating pharmacological and dietary-supplement treatments for autism that reported both clinician- and caregiver-ratings of RRBs. Treatment effects between medications and placebo were quantified with standardized mean differences (SMDs). The agreement between clinician- and caregiver-rate

Transient cocaine-associated behavioral symptoms rated with a new instrument, the scale for assessment of positive symptoms for cocaine-induced psychosis (SAPS-CIP).

Chronic use of cocaine is associated with a variety of behavioral symptoms. The current report describes the assessment of cocaine-related behavioral symptoms (CRB) using the Scale for Assessment of Positive Symptoms of Cocaine-Induced Psychosis (SAPS-CIP). The CRB section, one of the three domains in the SAPS-CIP, consists of sub-domains, including Aggressive/Agitated Behavior, Repetitive/Stereotyped Behavior, and Unusual Social or Sexual Behavior. Severity scores are assigned according to operational criteria, and range from 0 (not present) to 5 (severe). We interviewed 261 unrelated cocaine

Flow in screen-based gamified virtual reality sports: development and validation of a behaviorally anchored proxy rating scale for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) face substantial barriers to physical activity participation because of motor coordination difficulties, sensory hypersensitivity, and motivational challenges. Screen-based gamified virtual reality (VR) sports have emerged as a promising alternative, with flow identified as a key psychological mechanism underlying their effects. However, alexithymia and atypical interoceptive processing in adolescents with ASD render conventional self-report flow scales inappropriate for this population. This study aimed to develop and validate a beha

INTRODUCTION: Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are observed in more than 90% of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). BPSDs are remediable if detected early and managed appropriately. Behavioral Pathology in Alzheimer's disease Rating Scale (BEHAVE-AD) and Empirical BEHAVE-AD (E-BEHAVE-AD) were designed to identify BPSD. The aim of this study is to validate and prepare BEHAVE-AD and E-BEHAVE-AD in Persian language for clinical and research applications. METHOD: 120 patients were selected through a combination of intentional and convenience sampling. All participants

Functional Analysis Outcomes and Comparison of Direct Observations and Informant Rating Scales in the Assessment of Severe Behavior Problems of Infants and Toddlers At-Risk for Developmental Delays.

Severe problem behaviors, like aggression, self-injury, and repetitive behaviors, in people with intellectual and developmental disabilities often appear during early development and may persist without early intervention. The frequencies of self-injurious behavior, aggression, tantrums, property destruction and stereotyped behavior among 17 infants and toddlers at risk for developmental delays and severe behavior problems were assessed using two methods: 1) direct observation of responses during 10 s partial interval recording during analogue functional analysis and 2) the Behavior Problem In

The assessment of autistic children: a selective review of available instruments.

This review examines five measures specifically designed to assess autistic symptomatology: Rimland's Diagnostic Checklist for Behavior-Disturbed Children, the Behavior Rating Instrument for Autistic and Atypical Children, the Behavior Observation Scale for Autism, the Childhood Autism Rating Scale, and the Autism Behavior Checklist. Available studies of reliability and validity issues are discussed. Reliability indices for all scales, except Rimland's Diagnostic Checklist, are at acceptable levels. Each scale has been found to suffer from a lack of demonstrated discriminant and/or content val

Assessing suicide risk in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder: a dimensional approach.

OBJECTIVES: Although an association has been found recently between obsessive-compulsive disorder and an increased risk of suicide, the prevalence of both suicidal ideation and attempts vary considerably and are generally assessed categorically. Our aims were to evaluate the prevalence of suicidal ideation and behaviors using a dimensional approach. METHODS: The sample included 129 patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Suicidality was assessed by administering the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale. Logistic and linear regressions were used to examine predictors of suicidal ideatio

Criterion-related validity of the PDD Behavior Inventory.

The PDD Behavior Inventory (PDDBI) is a rating scale filled out by parents and teachers that is designed to assess response to intervention in children with PDD. It consists of subscales that measure both maladaptive and adaptive behaviors and also provides a summary "Autism Score" reflective of the severity of the condition. The scale has been shown to have very good internal consistency as well as developmental and construct validity. In this study, the PDDBI's criterion-related validity was assessed. Correlations with the Childhood Autism Rating Scale and the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Rev

Effectiveness of symptom validity measures in identifying cognitive and behavioral symptom exaggeration in adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

This study examines the effectiveness of symptom validity measures to detect suspect effort in cognitive testing and invalid completion of ADHD behavior rating scales in 268 adults referred for ADHD assessment. Patients were diagnosed with ADHD based on cognitive testing, behavior rating scales, and clinical interview. Suspect effort was diagnosed by at least two of the following: failure on embedded and free-standing SVT measures, a score > 2 SD below the ADD population average on tests, failure on an ADHD behavior rating scale validity scale, or a major discrepancy between reported and obser

Adaptive and maladaptive behavior in children with Smith-Magenis Syndrome.

Children with Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS) exhibit deficits in adaptive behavior but systematic studies using objective measures are lacking. This descriptive study assessed adaptive functioning in 19 children with SMS using the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (VABS). Maladaptive behavior was examined through parent questionnaires and the Childhood Autism Rating Scale. Cognitive functioning was evaluated with an age-appropriate test. Children scored below average on VABS Communication, Daily Living Skills, and Socialization scales. Learning problems and hyperactivity scales on the Conner's P
