Neural circuits controlling behavior and autonomic functions in medicinal leeches.

In the study of the neural circuits underlying behavior and autonomic functions, the stereotyped and accessible nervous system of medicinal leeches, Hirudo sp., has been particularly informative. These leeches express well-defined behaviors and autonomic movements which are amenable to investigation at the circuit and neuronal levels. In this review, we discuss some of the best understood of these movements and the circuits which underlie them, focusing on swimming, crawling and heartbeat. We also discuss the rudiments of decision-making: the selection between generally mutually exclusive beha

The Culture of Academic Medicine: Faculty Behaviors Impacting the Learning Environment.

OBJECTIVE: The culture of academic medical institutions impacts trainee education, among many other faculty and patient outcomes. Disrespectful behavior by faculty is one of the most challenging and common problems that, left unattended, disrupts healthy work and learning environments. Conversely, a respectful environment facilitates learning, creates a sense of safety, and rewards professionalism. The authors developed surveys and an intervention in an effort to better understand and improve climate concerns among health sciences faculty at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), a re

LGBTQIA+ sexual health: a SITCC clinical framework for integrating cognitive-behavioral therapy and sexual medicine.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender diverse (LGBTQIA+) individuals experience significant sexual health disparities shaped by minority stress processes, trauma exposure, mental health burden, and historically heteronormative and cisnormative clinical frameworks. Although international guidelines, standards of care, and professional guidance documents increasingly endorse affirmative and evidence-informed care, their integration into routine sexual medicine and psychotherapeutic practice remains inconsistent, particularly in the assessment and clinical management of sexual dysfunctions in LGBTQIA+

Society of Behavioral Medicine supports legislation to prevent the public health impact of the flu.

Seasonal influenza remains a persistent public health threat in the United States, causing tens of thousands of deaths and hospitalizations each year despite the availability of effective vaccines. Ongoing challenges-including low vaccination uptake, health inequities, and declining trust in public health institutions-have hindered prevention efforts and left vulnerable populations at heightened risk. The Society of Behavioral Medicine calls for maintaining Medicaid funding, investing in vaccination promotion, and restoring public health data sources to mitigate the impact of influenza. During

Survey of Resources in Behavioral Sleep Medicine Across the Department of Defense, Defense Health Agency.

INTRODUCTION: Insomnia affects approximately 40% of active duty service members and adversely affects health, readiness, and safety. The VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline for the management of insomnia recommends cognitive-behavioral treatment of insomnia (CBTI) or its abbreviated version (brief behavioral treatment of insomnia [BBTI]) as the first-line insomnia treatment. The goal of this study was to assess CBTI/BBTI resources at MTFs, perceived facilitators and barriers for CBTI/BBTI, and gaps in these treatments across the Defense Health Agency. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between July and Oc

Identifying Prevalence and Characteristics of Behavioral Health Education in Family Medicine Clerkships: A CERA Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Many patients with behavioral health disorders do not seek or receive adequate care for their conditions. Among those that do, most will receive care in a primary care setting. To best meet this need, clinicians will need to demonstrate proficiency of behavioral health skills and evidence-based practices. We sought to explore the degree to which these skills are being taught in family medicine clerkships. METHODS: The Council of Academic Family Medicine's (CAFM) Educational Research Alliance (CERA) 2016 survey of clerkship directors (CDs) was sent to 141 CDs at US a

Behavioral medicine in pain and analgesia management for the hemophilic child with factor VIII inhibitor.

The present report describes the application of self-regulation techniques (progressive muscle relaxation, meditative breathing, and guided imagery) to the management of bleeding and arthritic pain and analgesic dependence in a 9-year-old hemophilic child with factor VIII inhibitor. Self-regulation training was effective in decreasing pain intensity and analgesic dependence, with 1-year follow-up demonstrating substantial improvements across both medical and psychosocial parameters.

Feasibility and acceptability of an integrated behavioral medicine service within a post-bariatric surgery clinic.

BACKGROUND: Long-term medical and psychological follow-up after weight loss surgery is associated with improved patient outcomes. Weight regain after weight loss surgery is a common concern that has behavioral and psychological components; however, most patients do not attend behavioral medicine (BMED) follow-up appointments post-surgery. Innovative treatment models are needed to improve access to BMED to optimize long-term outcomes. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the feasibility and acceptability of an integrated BMED service within a bariatric surgery clinic. SETTING: University m

Stress psychobiology in the context of addiction medicine: from drugs of abuse to behavioral addictions.

In this chapter, we briefly review the basic biology of psychological stress and the stress response. We propose that psychological stress and the neurobiology of the stress response play in substance use initiation, maintenance, and relapse. The proposed mechanisms for this include, on the one hand, the complex interactions between biological mediators of the stress response and the dopaminergic reward system and, on the other hand, mediators of the stress response and other systems crucial in moderating key addiction-related behaviors such as endogenous opioids, the sympathetic-adrenal-medul

A behavioral medicine intervention for older women living alone with chronic pain - a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: To be an older woman, live alone, have chronic pain, and be dependent on support are all factors that may have an impact on daily life. One way to promote ability in everyday activities in people with pain-related conditions is to use individualized, integrated behavioral medicine in physical therapy interventions. How this kind of intervention works for older women living alone at home, with chronic pain, and dependent on formal care to manage their everyday lives has not been studied. The aim was to explore the feasibility of a study and to evaluate an individually tailored integ

The integration of cardiovascular behavioral medicine and psychoneuroimmunology: new developments based on converging research fields.

The immune system plays a role in the progression of coronary artery diseases and its clinical manifestations as acute coronary syndromes. It is well established that psychological factors can act as risk factors for acute coronary syndromes. This review describes psychoneuroimmunological pathways involved in coronary disease progression and documents that the stage of coronary disease is a major determinant of pathophysiological mechanisms accounting for the association between psychological risk factors, immune system parameters, and acute coronary syndromes. Chronic psychological risk facto

Behavioral medicine treatment of ruminative vomiting and associated weight loss in an adolescent with autism.

Treated persistent ruminative vomiting of a 15-year-old boy with autism using a multicomponent behavioral medicine program within a residential facility. Preceding intervention the boy had lost 15 pounds associated with high-rate ruminating. The treatment program included a combination of dietary, nutritional, and behavioral procedures that emphasized food restrictions, satiation, and setting condition manipulations. Ruminative vomiting was reduced to near-zero levels and weight gain was achieved following treatment implementation. These therapeutic gains were sustained during a maintenance pr

A study of the effectiveness of two group behavioral medicine interventions for patients with psychosomatic complaints.

This randomized, prospective study investigated the effectiveness of two group behavioral medicine interventions for primary care patients experiencing physical symptoms with a psychosocial component (eg, palpitations, gastrointestinal disturbances, headaches, malaise, sleep disorders). The subjects were 80 volunteers at a health maintenance organization (HMO) in the greater Boston area. Both interventions focused on the mind/body relationship and used didactic material, relaxation-response training, awareness training, and cognitive restructuring. The two behavioral medicine intervention grou

Assessment and treatment of compulsive sexual behavior disorder: a sexual medicine perspective.

INTRODUCTION: The addition of compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) into the ICD-11 chapter on mental, behavioral, or neurodevelopmental disorders has greatly stimulated research and controversy around compulsive sexual behavior, or what has been termed "hypersexual disorder," "sexual addiction," "porn addiction," "sexual compulsivity," and "out-of-control sexual behavior." OBJECTIVES: To identify where concerns exist from the perspective of sexual medicine and what can be done to resolve them. METHODS: A scientific review committee convened by the International Society for Sexual Medic

Perceptions of Unprofessional Social Media Behavior Among Emergency Medicine Physicians.

BACKGROUND: Use of social media (SM) by physicians has exposed issues of privacy and professionalism. While guidelines have been created for SM use, details regarding specific SM behaviors that could lead to disciplinary action presently do not exist. OBJECTIVE: To compare State Medical Board (SMB) directors' perceptions of investigation for specific SM behaviors with those of emergency medicine (EM) physicians. METHODS: A multicenter anonymous survey was administered to physicians at 3 academic EM residency programs. Surveys consisted of case vignettes, asking, "If the SMB were informed of

Neuroscience of opiates for addiction medicine: From stress-responsive systems to behavior.

Opiate addiction, similarly to addiction to other psychoactive drugs, is chronic relapsing brain disease caused by drug-induced short-term and long-term neuroadaptations at the molecular, cellular, and behavioral levels. Preclinical research in laboratory animals has found important interactions between opiate exposure and stress-responsive systems. In this review, we will discuss the dysregulation of several stress-responsive systems in opiate addiction: vasopressin and its receptor system, endogenous opioid systems (including proopiomelanocortin/mu opioid receptor and dynorphin/kappa opioid

Study on the cold and hot properties of medicinal herbs by thermotropism in mice behavior.

It is a common sense that chewing a mint leaf causes a cold feeling, while masticating a piece of ginger root is associated with a hot sensation. The Traditional Chinese Medicine has termed this phenomenon as cold and hot properties of herbs and applied them in treating certain human diseases successfully for thousands of years. Here, we have developed an Animal Thermotropism Behavior Surveillance System, and by using this device and other approaches, we not only verified the existence of, but also characterized and quantitated the cold and hot properties of medicinal herbs in animal behaviora

Childhood trauma and sexual behavior in adulthood among internal medicine outpatients.

Abuse in childhood may be associated with a variety of sexual behaviors in adulthood. However, previous studies have been limited by population type, number of traumas inquired about, and number of sexual behaviors explored. In this study, we examined five forms of childhood abuse or trauma (i.e. sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, and the witnessing of violence) and 13 sexuality variables (e.g., age at first intercourse, number of different sexual partners) among 76 women in an outpatient resident-provider internal medicine setting. Defensive medicine-related practices among child and adolescent psychiatrists in Türkiye: prevalence, behavioral patterns, and associated factors.

INTRODUCTION: Defensive medicine (DM) refers to practices adopted to avoid potentially distressing medico-legal situations. Although DM has been widely studied across various medical specialties, evidence in psychiatry remains limited, and no studies have specifically examined this issue in child and adolescent psychiatry. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of DM among child and adolescent psychiatrists in Türkiye and to identify associated factors. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted using an anonymous online survey distributed between November 2024 and February 2025. T
