OBJECTIVE: To report a case of a patient with Behcet's syndrome who developed treatment resistant bipolar disorder (BD) several years after the onset of Behcet's syndrome.
METHODS: A 62-year-old woman suffering from Behcet's syndrome since the age of 38, who developed a typical BD 6 years after the first manifestations of the syndrome was described.
RESULTS: Once BD occurred, Behcet's syndrome became milder, while BD deteriorated and evolved into a rapid cycling illness. Lithium and carbamazepine were ineffective in controlling the affective symptoms, while sodium valproate combined with low

HIV/AIDS patients often present with orogenital ulcers. In the immunocompromised patient diagnosis of these ulcers pose a challenge, as there is a myriad of etiologies. We present a case of an HIV/AIDS patient with recurrent orogenital aphthosis that was confirmed to have concomitant diagnosis of Behcet's disease. Proper awareness of the causes of these ulcers is essential for prompt and effective treatment. While rare causes may be at the bottom of a differential list in an immunocompetent host, when HIV/AIDS is involved these rare causes often percolate to the top.

BACKGROUND: The pustular skin lesions of Behcet's syndrome (BS) are clinically and histopathologically similar to ordinary acne, but BS patients get lesions at sites not commonly involved in acne, such as the legs and arms. The microbiology of these lesions has not been studied adequately.
OBJECTIVE: To make a detailed study of the microbiology of BS lesions.
METHODS: Subjects were patients with BS and acne vulgaris. Material was extracted from pustular lesions and directly plated to aerobic and anaerobic media by sterile swab. Anaerobic bacteria were identified using a commercial kit (API 2

A 27-year-old Kosovo-Albanian woman with recurrent oral and genital ulcerations, arthralgias, erythema nodosum, and eye symptoms, was admitted for dyspareunia. Objective findings met the diagnostic criteria for Behçet's syndrome (BS). An unexpected narrow fibrotic ring was found in the vagina. Two incisions were made and the diameter was normalised. She was treated with prednisolone and Imuran, with good symptom relief. BS might be a differential diagnostic hint when inexplicable vaginal stenosis occurs.

A brother and sister of first cousin Pakistani parents presented with recurrent mouth ulcers and chronic diarrhoea in the neonatal period. Diarrhoea persisted in spite of treatment with oral prednisolone and sulphasalazine. Both children required subtotal colectomy with ileostomy. Histopathology of the resected colons was virtually identical and showed multiple deep "flask"-shaped ulcers, often penetrating to the serosa, in the presence of chronic inflammation, but without any of the characteristic histological features of Crohn's disease. The appearance closely resembled the colitis of Beh,ce

Behcet syndrome is a systemic vasculitis characterized by relapsing uveitis, oral aphthous, and genital ulcers. We present a rare case of a 14-year-old male with juvenile Behcet syndrome (JBS) presenting as bilateral optic neuritis with oral aphthous. Initial treatment with methylprednisolone did not improve the patient's condition. Serum plasmapheresis was performed, resulting in improved visual acuity and papillitis. The patient was discharged with azathioprine, which led to symptom regression. This case highlights the atypical neurologic presentation of JBS and the potential efficacy of pla

INTRODUCTION: Vascular events account for a considerable burden of morbidity and mortality in Behçet syndrome (BS). Thrombosis occurs in 1.8-21 % pediatric BS patients, even if the real prevalence is still largely unknown.
OBJECTIVES: To report clinical features and outcomes of pediatric BS patients with thrombosis and to compare the demographic and clinical characteristics of BS patients with and without thrombosis.
METHODS: Retrospective data collection of BS patients with thrombosis (T+) included in the EUROFEVER registry. BS patients without thrombosis (T-), belonging to the same rheumat

Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is considered a rare but serious complication of Behçet's disease (BD). This study was performed to define the prevalence, clinical and biological features, treatment, and clinical course of BSC associated with BD in a Moroccan population. We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 1578 patients fulfilling the international diagnostic criteria for BD, including those with BSC. Eighteen male and 3 female patients, with a mean age of 36 ± 8.6 years. The inferior vena cava was involved in 81% (n = 17) of cases. All forms of BCS were noted: the chronic form in 52

Behcet's disease is a multisystemic vasculitis of unknown etiology with a chronic relapsing course. Vasculitis in Behcet's disease with predominant vascular involvement is the only vasculitis that affects both arteries and veins of any size. Involvement of the renal artery and inferior vena cava is rare among the arteries and veins, respectively. When disease affect the veins, it is in the form of thrombosis. Arterial complications include aneurysms, stenosis and occlusions. Both rupture of arterial aneurysm and occlusion of suprahepatic veins, causing Budd-Chiari syndrome, are associated with

Etiologic diagnosis of an eosinophilic pleural effusion (EPE) presents a diagnostic challenge when intrapleural air and blood have been ruled out as its proximate causes. Among the causes of EPE, those that require immunosuppression for the underlying disease include connective tissue diseases, sarcoidosis, vasculitis, and eosinophilic pneumonia. We present a case of clinically suspected Behcet's syndrome based on a 10-year history of recurrent multiple oral ulcers and human leukocyte antigen-B51 positivity who presented with only an EPE. Computed tomography pulmonary angiogram ruled out centr

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We prepared a cross-cultural adaptation of the Behcet's Syndrome Activity Scale (BSAS) and evaluated its reliability and validity in Korea.
METHODS: Fifty patients with Behcet's disease (BD) who attended the Rheumatology Clinic of Gachon University Gil Medical Center were included in this study. The first BSAS questionnaire was administered at each clinic visit, and the second questionnaire was completed at home within 24 hours of the visit. A Behcet's Disease Current Activity Form (BDCAF) and a Behcet's Disease Quality of Life (BDQOL) form were also given to patients. The te

A rare case of Behcet's disease associated with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is described. A 50-year-old Korean female suffering recurrent oral ulcer, genital ulcer, fatigue, arthralgia in both knees and fever was diagnosed as Behcet's disease. The findings of bone marrow aspirates were consistent with refractory anemia, a subtype of myelodysplastic syndrome. Chromosomal analysis of bone marrow cells revealed 46,XX,-8,-20,+der(8)t(8;20)(p23;p10),+der(8) t(8;20)(p23;q10)[30]. The chromosomal changes found in this patient were different from those of previous reports, which mostly revealed tri

Behcet's disease (BD) is a multisystem, autoimmune vasculitis disorder affecting small, medium, and large blood vessels, with poorly understood pathogenesis. It commonly presents with recurrent aphthous ulcers, genital ulcers, skin lesions, and bilateral uveitis. Neurological symptoms are present in less than 10% of cases and develop, on average, 5-6 years after the first non-neurological symptoms. This presentation, known as Neuro-Behcet's disease (NBD), is associated with a worse prognosis of BD. Treatment for NBD is dependent on the severity of symptoms and the presence of other systemic ma

Behcet's syndrome is a systemic inflammatory disorder that involves several organ systems and is exceptionally rare in the Western world. The diagnosis is frequently difficult as it resembles several other disease processes. A 23-year-old male with a previous presumptive diagnosis of Crohn's disease presented to our unit with genital ulceration. This is on a background of recurrent perianal abscesses requiring surgical drainage and seton placement. He subsequently developed a complex perianal fistula extending from the rectum to the perineum and left groin. After drainage and an unsuccessful t
