PURPOSE: Polygenic embryo screening (PES), or preimplantation genetic testing for polygenic conditions/traits, is an emerging application of polygenic risk scores within in vitro fertilization. Marketed commercially to prospective parents with limited professional guidelines, PES raises ethical and social concerns. To date, no scoping review has synthesized the ethical landscape of PES. Our study addresses this gap by mapping ethical and sociocultural issues across academic literature.
METHODS: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, in Septemb

Epistemic injustice has undergone a steady growth in the medical ethics literature throughout the last decade as many ethicists have found it to be a powerful tool for describing and assessing morally problematic situations in healthcare. However, surprisingly scarce attention has been devoted to how epistemic injustice relates to physicians' professional duties on a conceptual level. I argue that epistemic injustice, specifically testimonial, collides with physicians' duty of nonmaleficence and should thus be actively fought against in healthcare encounters on the ground of professional condu

Recent advances in biomarkers may soon make it possible to identify persons at high risk for late-onset Alzheimer's disease at a presymptomatic (preclinical) stage. Popular demand for testing is increasing despite the lack of cure and effective prevention options and despite uncertainties regarding the predictive value of biomarker tests. This underscores the relevance of the ethical, cultural and social implications of predictive testing and the need to advance the bioethical debate beyond considerations of clinical consequences. Our qualitative study included three groups of affected persons

BackgroundOver-/undertreatment are pervasive in older adults with cancer, and challenges arise in applying the principles of bioethics: beneficence, nonmaleficence, justice, and patient autonomy. The objective of this study was to determine whether these ethical principles relate to over-/undertreatment for older adults, and how tensions among the principles may contribute.MethodsWe conducted a modified Delphi study with 13 experts in biomedical ethics for iterative rounds of data collection. In the first round, we presented via electronic questionnaire our previously published definitions of

PURPOSE: Ethical questions are poorly investigated specifically in radiation oncology. The objective of the study was to identify and understand the main ethical issue in radiation oncology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A quantitative analysis was based on the answers to a questionnaire of 200 professionals from 22 radiation oncology departments. The questionnaire mainly aimed to characterize the main ethical issue. A monocentric qualitative analysis was based on semi-structured interviews focused on the main identified ethical issue, carried out with eight technologists, and 20 patients undergoing

Trust in leaders is central to citizen compliance with public policies. One potential determinant of trust is how leaders resolve conflicts between utilitarian and non-utilitarian ethical principles in moral dilemmas. Past research suggests that utilitarian responses to dilemmas can both erode and enhance trust in leaders: sacrificing some people to save many others ('instrumental harm') reduces trust, while maximizing the welfare of everyone equally ('impartial beneficence') may increase trust. In a multi-site experiment spanning 22 countries on six continents, participants (N = 23,929) compl

An infant with nonsyndromic craniosynostosis is brought to clinic by his Jehovah's Witness parents to discuss treatment. Five potential courses of action are discussed in the context of biomedical ethics principles. The potential conflict between parents' autonomy to make decisions for their child and the surgeon's ethical duty of beneficence to the patient is explored.

Corruption is a word used loosely to describe many kinds of action that people find distasteful. We prefer to reserve it for the intentional misuse of the good offices of an established social entity for private benefit, posing as fair trading. The currency of corruption is not always material or financial. Moral corruption is all too familiar within churches and other ostensibly beneficent institutions, and it happens within medicine and the pharmaceutical industries. Corrupt behavior reduces trust, costs money, causes injustice, and arouses anger. Yet it persists, despite all efforts since t

A goal of many science communicators is to foster trust in scientists and their work. This study investigates if existing textual resources that scientists create in the course of their regular activities can be improved to enhance perceptions of scientists as trustworthy. Building on Mayer et al.'s integrative model of organizational trust, we examine how communicating benevolence through short biographies can affect trustworthiness perceptions using a 3 (degree of benevolence information: high, unspecified, low) × 3 (research area: crop genetics, corn and soy genetics, biotechnology use) sur

Smoking has been associated with increased disease severity, poorer treatment response, and adverse outcomes in several dermatologic conditions, including hidradenitis suppurativa, psoriasis, cutaneous lupus erythematosus, and chronic wounds. Although smoking cessation counseling is traditionally viewed as the responsibility of primary care clinicians, dermatologists frequently encounter patients whose skin disease may be influenced by tobacco use. This raises an important ethical question: when does counseling aboutlifestyle behaviors fall within the scope of dermatologic practice? We discuss

BACKGROUND: Euthanasia and assisted suicide remain legally and ethically contested practices across Europe. National frameworks differ in eligibility criteria, procedural safeguards, and oversight mechanisms, reflecting diverse cultural, religious, and bioethical perspectives. The recent approval of Spain’s Organic Law 3/2021 regulating euthanasia provides a relevant context for comparative analysis. This review addresses the following research question: To what extent do differences in European legislation on euthanasia and assisted suicide impact the application of core bioethical principles

BACKGROUND: France has long been a country of immigration and in some respects may be seen to have a generous policy with respect to asylum seekers and access to health care for migrants. The French state notably provides healthcare access for undocumented migrants, through state medical aid and since 1998 has had a humanitarian policy for granting temporary residence permits for medical reason (TRPMR) to migrants. Within a context of political debate, reform and tightening immigration control we will examine this latter policy focusing especially on the dilemmas that arise for physicians of m

Gamete Donation is a widely accepted method which allows for individuals who may be limited by medical, genetic, or social reasons to conceive a child. While the ethics of gamete donation have been widely discussed, no discussion of the ethics of gamete donor screening and the different levels at which it can be understood has previously taken place. This paper discusses gamete donor screening in the context of Australia and proposes that there are three distinct levels to screening: legislation, donor banks, and individual selection. Through an examination of what has been deemed permissible

Conflicts of interest and other ethical dilemmas occur in Alzheimer disease (AD) patient care and research but often are underrecognized by physicians. One or more bioethical principles of autonomy, confidentiality, truth telling, beneficence, and justice, which apply to demented individuals as they do to other patients, may conflict in everyday clinical situations. For example, when demented patients wish to continue driving, autonomy (the patient's right to self-determination) conflicts with beneficence (the duty to promote the patient's welfare). Cognitively impaired patients depend on othe

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to evaluate the ethical dimensions of reflex and reflective testing (RRT) within the framework of value-based laboratory medicine and in alignment with ISO 15189:2022. The study aims to highlight the challenges in guiding and standardizing these practices in an era of value-based medicine.
METHODS: The ISO 15189:2022 requirements for quality and competence were examined alongside the IFCC Code of Ethics and relevant literature. The ethical evaluation was structured around the four core principles of bioethics: beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy,

In the era of promoting the concept of a "Community with a Shared Future for Mankind," understanding the psychological mechanisms underlying relational morality in Chinese culture holds important theoretical and practical value, particularly given its hierarchical structure of moral obligations. Across four studies, this research innovatively proposes a calculation method for moral differential mode to deeply explore how identification with all humanity (IWAH) influences Chinese people's moral differential mode. Study 1 used questionnaires to preliminarily explore the differential characterist

Doctors hold coexisting ethical duties to avoid causing deliberate harm to their patients (non-maleficence), to act in patients' best interests (beneficence), to respect patients' right to self-determination (autonomy) and to ensure that costs and benefits are fairly distributed among patients (justice). In the context of non-directed altruistic kidney donations (NDAKD), doctors' duties of autonomy and justice are in tension with those of non-maleficence and beneficence. This article examines these competing duties across three scenarios in which general practitioners (GPs) could promote NDAKD

The care provided to the residents of the Alzheimer's unit of the Pont-de-Veyle nursing home follows four main ethical principles: dignity, autonomy, beneficence and non-maleficence. The team demonstrates flexibility with regard to the washing and dressing of the residents, meal times and the organisation of activities. It does not resort to restraint. The respect of the person's dignity and privacy is maintained not only during nursing care but in all other aspects of their life.

Uterus transplantation (UTx) represents an emerging therapeutic option for women with absolute uterine-factor infertility (AUFI) and raises complex ethical questions as a non-life-saving intervention. This study presents an ethical analysis based on the four principles of Beauchamp and Childress-autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence, and social justice-and is grounded in a structured narrative literature review of current medical and ethical publications, drawing on the German legal context as an illustrative example. Uterus transplantation demonstrates potential benefits, particularly in ter
