Cunninghamella bertholletiae is a fungus of the Zygomycetes class, Mucorales order. Only very few cases of disseminated infection have been reported. We observed a new case in a 19 years old man with severe aplastic anemia, due to pulmonary primoinfection and hematologic dissemination. This aplastic anemia failed to respond first to an antithymocyte globulin and steroid treatment and then to cyclosporine A. Deferoxamine was infused weekly to prevent iron overload. During a second antithymocyte globulin and steroid treatment, the patient developed bilateral pneumonia. Culture of the broncho-alv

A unique patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia died with pneumonia caused by both Cunninghamella bertholletiae and Pneumocystis carinii. In tissue sections, the hyphae of C bertholletiae were twisted and ribbon-like, but were smaller than those typical for zygomycetes, displayed more than occasional septa, and exhibited Y branching, making histologic distinction from Aspergillus sp difficult.

Peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis due to fungi of the class Zygomycetes occurs very rarely. A case of fungal continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis peritonitis due to Cunninghamella bertholletiae is reported in a 39-year-old Aboriginal woman with end-stage renal failure and diabetes mellitus. This isolate was found to be resistant in vitro to amphotericin B, 5-fluorocytosine, fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole and voriconazole. However, this patient was successfully treated with voriconazole and removal of the Tenckhoff dialysis catheter. Zygomycoses are an emerging threat amo

OBJECTIVE: Mucormycosis is an uncommon but frequently fatal infection caused by strains of mucorales in immunocompromised hosts. In this study, we report a case of pulmonary mucormycosis associated with acute lymphocytic leukaemia caused by Cunninghamella bertholletiae, a rare pathogen.
METHODOLOGY: Retrospective analysis of the stored serum, sputum, and necropsy lung tissue samples from this patient, enabled subspecies identification by means of panfungal polymerase chain reaction (PCR), direct DNA sequencing of the PCR products, and homology search with nucleotide basic local alignment sear

Cunninghamella bertholletiae is a saprophytic fungus found in soil. Infection with this organism is extremely rare, occurring almost exclusively in immunosuppressed hosts. There have been only three previous cases of infection with this fungus reported in solid-organ recipients. We report an unusual case of disseminated Cunninghamella infection in a woman who had received a renal transplant. A 48-year-old woman received a living-related kidney transplant for focal segmental glomerulonephritis. She was treated with plasmapheresis and muromonab-CD3 (OKT3) for two episodes of rejection. Because o

Limited information is available regarding the pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of infection with Cunninghamella bertholletiae. In this report, we describe the clinical courses of three patients with leukemia and fatal C. bertholletiae infection and review the literature. In all patients, the infection developed in the setting of severe neutropenia following high doses of cytotoxic chemotherapy. Clinical presentation always consisted of fever and pneumonia and could be associated with dissemination to numerous organs. The course of infection was very rapid, and the diagnosis was made a

Fatty amides (N-alkylamides) are bioactive lipids that are widely distributed in microorganisms, animals, and plants. The low yield in the extraction process of spilantol, a fatty amide, which is mainly related to its diverse biological effects, compromises its application on a large scale. Thus, this study proposes an alternative method to synthesise fatty amides from Bertholletia excelsa (AGBe) oil, with a chemical structure similar to that of spilantol. Carrageenan-induced abdominal oedema in vivo models were used in zebrafish (Danio rerio). In in vivo studies, oral AGBe produced no signs o

This study evaluated the impact of maternal consumption of crude and refined Brazil nut oil on the physical, biochemical, and hepatic parameters of offspring in both male and female rats. Three maternal groups were formed: control (CG), crude oil (CO), and refined oil (RO), treated with 3,000 mg/kg of oil during gestation and lactation. The offspring were divided into male and female groups. Crude Brazil nut oil consumption resulted in increased body weight, total and mesenteric fat, as well as elevated coronary and cardiovascular risk indices. Conversely, the refined oil consumption reduced r

Mucormycosis is an invasive mold infection, frequently fatal in immunocompromised patients. We report the case of a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia admitted to the hematology unit for febrile aplasia. Pulmonary lesions suggesting a fungal infection expanded/increased despite a combination of posaconazole and liposomal amphotericin B. The fungal biomarkers performed repeatedly were negative. At D65 after chemotherapy a bronchial biopsy was positive for Cunninghamella bertholletiae. The patient died despite appropriate antifungal management. A qPCR targeting Cunninghamella was develope

In May 2012, an adult, male bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) was found stranded and dead on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. At necropsy, several areas of malacia were macroscopically observed in the periventricular parenchyma of the cerebrum. Microscopically a severe, diffuse, pyogranulomatous, and necrotizing meningoencephalomyelitis was associated with numerous intralesional highly pleomorphic fungal structures. After culture, the fungus, Cunninghamella bertholletiae, was identified by culture and PCR. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of central nervous system mucorm

Cunninghamella is a member of the class Zygomycetes. Cunninghamella species include ubiquitous filamentous fungi; infections caused by Cunninghamella species are less frequent but have higher mortality rates than infections caused by Mucorales group members such as Rhizopus and Mucor. Herein, we reported a rare fatal case of endobronchial metastasis from breast cancer accompanied with Cunninghamella bertholletiae tracheobronchial mycetoma. A 73-year-old female with a history of right-sided breast cancer who had undergone mastectomy 11 years previously and had no recurrence presented to our eme

BACKGROUND: Cunninghamella is a genus of the order Mucorales which includes saprophytic species, rarely causing mycoses. The most frequently reported in human mycoses is the thermophilic species Cunninghamella bertholletiae. However, this species does not appear to cause mucormycosis in animals, so there is scarce information about C. bertholletiae isolates from animals.
AIMS: In this paper we describe the phenotypic and genotypic characterization, and the phylogenetic analysis, of an isolate of C. bertholletiae involved in a central nervous system mucormycosis in a dolphin.
METHODS: The iso

A 62-year-old female was presented to the hospital of the current study for pancytopenia and was diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia. She was treated with a combination therapy of antithymocyte globulin, cyclosporine A, and eltrombopag. The patient also presented with febrile neutropenia after commencement of the treatment and did not respond to the various antibiotics and antifungal agents. Echocardiography showed a giant vegetation attached to the tricuspid valve on Day 78 of the immunosuppressive therapy, and the tricuspid valve replacement was performed. The vegetation was formed by Cunn

INTRODUCTION: Cunninghamella bertholletiae although rarely causing mucormycosis, is responsible for the highest mortality among mucormycetes. The diagnosis of mucormycosis is challenged by the absence of specific biomarkers. Herein, we report a fatal case of C. bertholletiae infection and detection of its DNA in the serum by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 23-year-old male with refractory osteosarcoma was admitted with multiple lung metastases. He was on oral voriconazole prophylaxis after pulmonary aspergillosis. He suffered from fever during temporary neutropenia fo

Cunninghamella bertholletiae is an unusual opportunistic pathogen belonging to the class Zygomycetes, order Mucorales, and the family Cunninghamellaceae. It has been identified with increased frequency in immunocompromised patients, especially those with hematological malignancy. Clinical infection by this fungus is almost always devastating. We report a fatal case of disseminated zygomycosis due to Cunninghamella bertholletiae in an acute myeloid leukemia patient without chemotherapy. We also reviewed the cases of Cunninghamella bertholletiae infection reported in these 20 years. These cases
