Total serum protein, albumin, globulin, globulin fractions (alpha, beta and gamma globulins) and an acute-phase protein (alpha1-acid glycoprotein) were evaluated in dogs with naturally occurring mild (Group 1), severe (Group 2) or complicated babesiosis (Group 3). Significant alterations in serum protein of mice following Hymenolepis nana infection were observed. Significant decrease in serum globulin took place in Hymenolepis nana mouse model treated with lead prior to infection. Decrease of alpha, beta and gamma globulins was maximum on day 4 in comparison to that of control, gradually tapering off by day 100 when suppression was minimum with the experimental values almost reaching the same level as those of the control. Thus, suppression of globulins was neither total nor permanent.

It has been established that morphine interacts with albumins, alpha 2- and beta-globulins, while promedol with all globulin fractions and to a less measure with plasma albumins of the intact rabbit. Interaction of morphine and especially that of promedol with the same protein fractions of allergizated animals proceeds more actively and is characterized by a more pronounced formation of biological complexes with alpha 1-globulins. Decreased pharmacological activity of morphine and promedol coincides with intensification of their interaction with proteins.

Serum protein of Swiss albino mice infected with Ancylostoma caninum larvae, were analysed electrophoretically. Twenty mice were infected with a dose of 1000 larvae and the alterations in serum protein during an infection period of 30 days were recorded and compared with uninfected controls. The result showed a significant decrease in albumin and gamma globulin with an increase in beta globulin. There were no significant changes in the alpha-1 and alpha-2 globulins. The total globulins increased and A/G ratio decreased. These changes appeared to be remarkable on the 9th day after infection.

Serum levels of beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2-M) were found to be significantly elevated in acute viral hepatitis, chronic persistent or active hepatitis and liver cirrhosis. beta 2-M values were significantly lower in chronic persistent hepatitis than in the three other groups. Serum beta 2-M was normal in 75 asymptomatic carriers of HBsAg. Steroid therapy was followed by reduction of serum beta 2-M levels in 11 cases of chronic active hepatitis. Variations of beta 2-M were independent from that of transaminases, bilirubin and gamma-globulins.

A retrospective analysis of data from a series of 22 patients with toxic megacolon complicating ulcerative colitis was performed in an attempt to detect factors associated with the fatal outcome of the attack. In two pregnancies at risk for homozygous beta+ and beta0 thalassaemia, fetal blood mixed with maternal blood was obtained by placental aspiration and was purified to over 90% purity by differential agglutination with anti-i antibodies. Study of globulin-chain synthesis showed absence of beta-globulin chain in both fetuses. The diagnosis of homozygous beta-thalassaemia was made and was confirmed after the pregnancies were terminated. Thus, the defect in beta-globulin-chain synthesis in homozygous beta-thalassaemia is expressed in utero, and prenatal diagnosis is possible.
