Pimecrolimus cream 1% vs. betamethasone 17-valerate 0.1% cream in the treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis. A randomized open-label clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory disease with remissions and exacerbations, characterized by erythema, scaling and pruritus primarily on the face, scalp and chest. Corticosteroids and antifungals are the mainstay of therapy. However, chronic use of corticosteroids is associated with side-effects such as skin atrophy and telangiectasia. Pimecrolimus, an inhibitor of calcineurin, has been used successfully in one patient with seborrhoeic dermatitis. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this randomized open-label clinical trial was to compare the efficacy and tolerability of

Efficacy of betamethasone valerate 0.1% thermophobic foam in seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp: an open-label, multicentre, prospective trial on 180 patients.

BACKGROUND: Seborrhoeic dermatitis (SD) is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the skin. Topical steroid creams and/or antifungal agents are commonly used in SD, but no resolutive therapies have been available up to now. Furthermore, little data have been available regarding clinical outcomes after cessation of topical treatments. A new formulation of betamethasone valerate 0.1% in a thermophobic, low-residue, foam vehicle (Bettamousse) (BVM) has become available for the topical treatment of scalp dermatoses. No data have been published hitherto regarding efficacy, safety and patient acce

Hybrids between H2S-donors and betamethasone 17-valerate or triamcinolone acetonide inhibit mast cell degranulation and promote hyperpolarization of bronchial smooth muscle cells.

Glucocorticoids represent the standard gold treatment of inflammation in asthmatic patients. More recently, H2S has been described to exert positive effect on this disease. Bearing in mind that an improved pharmacological activity and a reduced toxicity can be obtained through hybridization of different molecules, simultaneously modulating multiple targets, we designed and synthesized novel betamethasone 17-valerate and triamcinolone acetonide hybrids with well-known H2S-donor moieties. Synthesized compounds have been evaluated for the potential H2S-releasing profile both in cell-free environm

Pimecrolimus 1% cream versus betamethasone 17-valerate 0.1% cream in the treatment of facial discoid lupus erythematosus: a double-blind, randomized pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is commonly treated with topical agents, the most important of which are glucocorticosteroids. However, prolonged use of these agents, especially on sensitive areas such as the face, may result in side-effects (e.g. atrophy and telangiectases) by altering collagen synthesis. Therefore, alternative treatments are needed for these patients. AIM: To investigate and compare the efficacy of topical pimecrolimus 1% cream and topical betamethasone 17-valerate 0.1% cream on facial lesions of DLE. METHODS: This was a randomized double-blind pilot study, p

Efficacy and safety of the Betamethasone valerate 0.1% plaster in mild-to-moderate chronic plaque psoriasis: a randomized, parallel-group, active-controlled, phase III study.

BACKGROUND: Corticosteroids are a versatile option for the treatment of mild-to-moderate psoriasis due to their availability in a wide range of potencies and formulations. Occlusion of the corticosteroid is a widely accepted procedure to enhance the penetration of the medication, thereby improving its effectiveness. Betamethasone valerate (BMV) is a moderately potent corticosteroid that is available as a cream, ointment, and lotion. A ready-to-use occlusive dressing, which provides a continuous sustained release of BMV, has been developed for the treatment of psoriasis. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate
