Distinguishing war-related PTSD resulting from perpetration- and betrayal-based morally injurious events.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) during a combat deployment may lead to PTSD through distinct pathways from danger-based events. We also examined the prevalence of perpetration-based PMIEs, during which service members behaved in ways that violated their own moral values, and betrayal-based PMIEs, during which personal moral expectations were violated by trusted others. METHOD: Using a sample of 867 active duty Marines from a single infantry battalion that engaged in heavy ground combat while deployed to Afghanistan, a structural equation model w

Betrayal trauma among homeless adults: associations with revictimization, psychological well-being, and health.

Betrayal trauma theory postulates that traumas perpetrated by a caregiver or close other are more detrimental to mental health functioning than are traumatic experiences in which the victim is not affiliated closely with the perpetrator. This study is the first to examine the concept of betrayal among a sample of individuals with a history of homelessness. A total of 95 homeless or formerly homeless adults completed the Brief Betrayal Trauma Survey, the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist-Civilian Version, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale the Perceived Stress Scale, an

Oxytocin modulates the link between adult attachment and cooperation through reduced betrayal aversion.

An experiment examined whether and how the relationship between individual differences in social attachment and cooperation is modulated by brain oxytocin, a neuropeptide implicated both in parent-child bonding, and in social approach. Healthy males completed a validated attachment style measure, received intranasal oxytocin or placebo, and privately chose between cooperation and non-cooperation in an incentivized social dilemma with an anonymous stranger. Attachment anxiety--the tendency to fear rejection by others--had few effects and was not modulated by oxytocin. However, oxytocin interact

Betrayal trauma: relationship to physical health, psychological distress, and a written disclosure intervention.

In the current study we sought, first, to distinguish associations with health arising from types of trauma as indicated by betrayal trauma theory (Freyd, 1996, 2001), and, second, to investigate the impact of disclosing a trauma history in survey form and/or writing essays about betrayal traumas. We recruited 99 community adults reporting at least 12 months of chronic medical illness or pain, 80 of whom completed all four sessions of this six-month longitudinal intervention study. Participants were randomly assigned to write about betrayal traumas or neutral events, and they were randomly ass

Assessing peer support in prolonged exposure outcomes for veterans with betrayal traumas.

OBJECTIVE: Prolonged exposure (PE) is an efficacious treatment, but the high dropout rate has implored researchers to find ways to retain patients. One such effort, the PE + Peers program, integrates a previous PE graduate to provide the current patient advice and emotional support during in vivo exposure homework during the first weeks of treatment. This program has helped veterans who previously dropped out of PE return to treatment and see significant success. However, survivors of traumatic events featuring betrayals of trust, such as sexual violence, may have unique difficulty trusting ot

A Cross-Cultural Investigation of the Association between Betrayal Trauma and Dissociative Features.

Betrayal trauma theory proposes that betrayal and non-betrayal traumas are different in terms of their nature and impacts. The theory predicts that dissociation is more strongly related to betrayal than to non-betrayal trauma, however there is a lack of cross-cultural evaluation of the theory. One competing theory is the socio-cognitive model, which proposes that dissociative amnesia (DA) and identity dissociation (ID) are the results of social influence and are not trauma-related conditions. This study aimed to test the hypotheses based on betrayal trauma theory and investigated the relations

Profiles of childhood trauma: Betrayal, frequency, and psychological distress in late adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: With an emphasis on betrayal trauma, this study used latent profile analysis to examine how childhood traumas co-occur and whether trauma patterns differentially predicted psychological distress. METHOD: A community sample of 806 adolescents and young adults participated. Youths reported their trauma histories, and lifetime DSM-IV disorders were assessed using a structured diagnostic interview. RESULTS: Latent profile analysis yielded 5 profiles: high betrayal trauma physical violence and emotional abuse (HBTPE), high betrayal trauma sexual and emotional abuse (HBTSE), low betraya

Who is to blame? Oxytocin promotes nonpersonalistic attributions in response to a trust betrayal.

Recent research revealed that the neuropeptide Oxytocin (OT) increases and maintains trustful behavior, even towards interaction partners that have proven to be untrustworthy. However, the cognitive mechanisms behind this effect are unclear. In the present paper, we propose that OT might boost trust through the link between angry rumination and the use of nonpersonalistic and personalistic attributions. Nonpersonalistic attributions put the blame for the betrayal on the perpetrator's situation, whereas personalistic attributions blame his dispositions for the event. We predict that OT changes

Themes of power and betrayal in sexual abuse survivors' characterizations of interpersonal relationships.

Consistent with the notion that childhood sexual abuse (CSA) shapes motivational dispositions and internalized schemata that are reflected in adult characterizations of self and others, we hypothesized that adult CSA survivors' characterizations of interpersonal relationships would reflect greater power motivation as defined by McClelland and Winter, and more preoccupation with themes of powerlessness and betrayal than nonabused adult's - a pattern associated with poor psychological functioning. Stories written by women with CSA histories (n = 43) reflected both a greater need for and fear of

Serial Infidelity and Psychological Abuse: Diagnostic Blind Spots in Recognising Betrayal Trauma.

ObjectiveThis narrative review examines the intersection of serial infidelity, coercive control, and psychological abuse as an under-recognised form of betrayal trauma.MethodsGuided by PRISMA principles, a systematic search of four databases (PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) identified 47 peer-reviewed studies published between 1990 and 2025 that met inclusion criteria. Studies were included if they examined repeated infidelity within intimate relationships, associated patterns of coercive control, gaslighting (defined here as psychologically manipulating a person into questioning

COVID-19-related institutional betrayal associated with trauma symptoms among undergraduate students.

Individuals are dependent on institutions (e.g., universities, governments, healthcare systems) to protect their safety and advocate for their needs. When institutions harm the individuals who depend on them, they commit institutional betrayal, which has been associated with numerous negative outcomes in prior research. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, students have entrusted universities to protect both their health and their educational opportunities. However, many universities have failed to meet these expectations, and it is likely that many students experience COVID-19-related institutio

Assembling Justice: Reviving Nonhuman Subjectivities to Examine Institutional Betrayal Around Sexual Misconduct.

While some colleges have adopted bystander intervention and restorative justice practices to address sexual misconduct as a community issue, psychoanalytic institutes facing crises of sexual misconduct have typically relied on the tried-and-true tactic of identifying the neoliberal individual as the sole site of trouble. Successful strategies used in colleges can be applied to the psychoanalytic setting by focusing on institutional betrayal. This systemic, community-based approach decenters not only individual bodies but human subjectivities. Here institutions become not just containers for gr

Modulation of Trust in Borderline Personality Disorder by Script-Based Imaginal Exposure to Betrayal.

Interpersonal and trust-related difficulties are central features of borderline personality disorder (BPD). In this study, we applied script-driven betrayal imagery to evoke mistrustful behavior in a social reinforcement learning task. In 21 BPD and 20 healthy control (HC) participants, we compared this approach to the standard confederate paradigm used in research studies. The script-driven imagery evoked a transient increase in negative affect and also decreased trusting behavior to a similar degree in both groups. Across conditions, we also replicated previously reported between-group diffe

Governmental betrayal trauma: When failures of state protection undermine public trust and mental health.

This study examined governmental betrayal trauma, defined as the experience of being harmed or insufficiently protected by the state, among Israeli civilians during the Israel-Hamas war. Drawing on institutional betrayal theory, we investigated how trust in government, including competence, benevolence, and integrity, and system justification relate to governmental betrayal trauma and whether system justification mediates the association between trust in government and governmental betrayal trauma. A convenience sample of 832 Israeli adults completed self-report measures, adapted to the wartim

Transitioning toward a better future in behavioral health: From institutional betrayal to racial healing.

Racial trauma, betrayal trauma, and institutional betrayal are baked into the history of the United States. This legacy of injustice encompasses direct experiences of racism and discrimination, as well as a broader sense of betrayal in which the very institutions tasked with helping people, such as the U.S. health care system, let them down in egregious, painful, or even fatal ways. Using the theories of racial trauma (i.e., an extreme stress response to cumulative firsthand and vicarious experiences of racism and discrimination), betrayal trauma (i.e., a violation of trust by a person on whom

Invisible in uniform: Bereavement under betrayal and Existential randomness among female IDF spotters.

This qualitative study examines how the sense of institutional betrayal and the randomness of survival shape the experience of traumatic bereavement among 20 female IDF spotters who survived the events of October 7. Data were analyzed using Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA). The findings reveal the phenomenon of "bereavement under betrayal"-a condition in which the processing of loss is complicated and blocked by a profound rupture in the institutional contract. This foundation was formed by prior "epistemic injustice" (the systematic dismissal of their professional warnings before the disaste

Once bitten, twice shy: The negative spillover effect of seeing betrayal of trust.

From financial improprieties to fraudulent claims, scandals and trust transgressions can incite feelings of betrayal. Can these negative reactions spillover and taint other entities that were not involved in the original transgression? We conducted six studies to investigate this question directly. Results consistently demonstrated that people who had perceived a recent betrayal by a transgressing trustee were significantly less likely to trust a new entity that shared nominal group membership with the previous trust transgressor. This betrayal spillover effect occurs both in economic game env

Incremental effects of betrayal trauma and borderline personality disorder symptoms on suicide risk.

OBJECTIVE: Suicide is a problem on college campuses. One of the strongest predictors of suicide risk is symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Additional factors, such as trauma, also increase risk for suicide. One type of trauma that is especially insidious is 1 in which people are betrayed by others on whom they depend for support or protection (betrayal traumas). However, there is little research on the incremental effects of BPD symptoms and trauma with varying degrees of betrayal on suicide risk. METHOD: In this study, we examined the relative effects of BPD symptoms and trau

Childhood betrayal trauma and self-blame appraisals among survivors of intimate partner abuse.

Child abuse perpetrated by a close other, such as a parent, is linked to a wide range of detrimental effects, including an increased risk of self-blame. The current study evaluated whether experiences of childhood betrayal trauma were linked to self-blame following victimization in adulthood. A diverse sample of women (n = 230) from an urban city were recruited based on having experienced an incident of intimate partner abuse (IPA) reported to the local police. Women reported on their trauma histories and levels of self-blame for the target IPA incident. Results showed that a history of childh

Perceived betrayal moderates the effects of battlefield experiences on suicidal ideation and help-seeking.

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among military personnel, and help-seeking is crucial to combating it. Research has not yet investigated the role that potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs), particularly betrayal, may play in moderating the effect of battlefield experiences on these variables. Data from 694 U.S. Army personnel, all of whom had at least one combat deployment, were analyzed to examine battlefield life-threatening experiences (LTEs), suicidal ideation, help-seeking behavior, PMIEs, depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) sym
