Adaptation and impairment of DNA repair function in pollen of Betula verrucosa and seeds of Oenothera biennis from differently radionuclide-contaminated sites of Chernobyl.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The plants that have remained in the contaminated areas around Chernobyl since 1986 encapsulate the effects of radiation. Such plants are chronically exposed to radionuclides that they have accumulated internally as well as to alpha-, beta- and gamma-emitting radionuclides from external sources and from the soil. This radiation leads to genetic damage that can be countered by DNA repair systems. The objective of this study is to follow DNA repair and adaptation in haploid cells (birch pollen) and diploid cells (seed embryos of the evening primrose) from plants that have be

Inhibitory Effect of Periodontitis through C/EBP and 11β-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase Type 1 Regulation of Betulin Isolated from the Bark of Betula platyphylla.

Periodontitis is an infectious inflammatory disease of the tissues around the tooth that destroys connective tissue and is characterized by loss of periodontal ligaments and alveolar bone. Currently, surgical methods for the treatment of periodontitis have limitations and new treatment strategies are needed. Therefore, this study evaluated the efficacy of the compound betulin isolated from bark of Betula platyphylla on the inhibition of periodontitis in vitro and in vivo periodontitis induction models. In the study, betulin inhibited pro-inflammatory mediators, such as tumor necrosis factor, i

Ethanol extract from birch bark (Betula pubescens) suppresses human dendritic cell mediated Th1 responses and directs it towards a Th17 regulatory response in vitro.

Extracts and fractions from birch bark have been used to treat various diseases, such as skin disorders and rheumatism, and for analgesic effects. Results from studies in vitro and in vivo have shown that birch bark extracts can have immunoregulatory effects. These effects have mainly been attributed to the various triterpenes found in birch bark. The effects of birch bark from Betula pubescens on immune responses have not been reported. Ethanol extract was prepared from dry birch bark (DBBEE) and five fractions made using various ratios of dichloromethane and methanol (fractions I-V). Human m

An Indicating Role of Antioxidant System Enzymes at the Stage of Active Structural Anomalies Formation in Karelian Birch (Betula pendula Roth var. carelica (Mercl.) Hämet-Ahti).

INTRODUCTION: A complex study of the antioxidant system enzymes (AOS) is an important subject of biochemical research; changes in the activity of these enzymes can be used as a biochemical marker of various processes in plants. At the same time, practically little attention has been paid to describing the regularities of these enzymatic reactions in different wood formation processes, such as xylogenesis. This article discusses the outcomes of different behaviors of AOS enzymes, which are involved in both the redistribution of the ROS balance and phenolic compounds at the early stages of wood

Spatial responses of two herbivore groups to a geometrid larva on mountain birch.

Direct or plant-mediated interactions between herbivores may modify their spatial distribution among and within plants. In this study, we examined the effect of a leaf-chewing geometrid, the autumnal moth (Epirrita autumnata), on two different herbivore groups, leaf rolling Deporaus betulae weevils and Eriocrania spp. leafminers, both feeding on mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii). The exact locations of herbivores within tree canopies were mapped during three successive summers. In the first 2 years, some trees were artificially colonized by eggs of the autumnal moth to induce

Microscopical palynology: Birch woodland expansion and species hybridisation coincide with periods of climate warming during the Holocene epoch in Iceland.

Introgressive hybridisation between arctic dwarf birch (Betula nana) and European downy birch (B. pubescens) is relatively common in natural woodlands in Iceland. As dwarf birch is a diploid species and downy tree birch a tetraploid species, their hybrids are triploid. In the introgression process, triploid hybrids, which are partially fertile, can backcross with the parental species, producing progenies comprising introgressed diploid, triploid and tetraploid plants. Triploid plants produce both normal triporate pollen (with three pores) and abnormal, aborted pollen, due to dysfunctional meio

Immediate contact allergy to birch leaves and sap.

Fresh sap and crushed leaf of birch (Betula verrucosa) were tested with the scratch chamber method in 117 atopic persons, 74 of whom were allergic and 43 nonallergic to birch pollen, and in 33 control patients. Immediate positive reactions to birch sap were seen in 39% and to leaf in 28% of the patients allergic to birch pollen, in one of the birch pollen-negative patients, but in none of the control patients. Birch leaves may cause contact urticaria in the Finnish sauna, where bath whisks made of birch sprigs are traditionally used.

Betulin, an active component from Chinese herb birch bark, suppresses tumor angiogenesis and tumor growth by inhibiting the PAX2/VEGF-A/VEGR2 signaling pathway in non-small cell lung cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Angiogenesis inhibition is an effective therapeutic strategy for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Natural products serve as critical sources of antiangiogenic inhibitors. Betula platyphylla Suk (birch bark) is a Chinese medicine that can clear heat, detoxify, relieve cough and resolve phlegm. This herb has attracted increasing attention because of its antitumor effects. Betulin is a crucial active ingredient of Betula platyphylla Suk and has been shown to have antitumor effects through the induction of apoptosis and ferroptosis. However, its antiangiogenic effect

Antibacterial properties of experimentally produced birch tar and its medicinal affordances in the Pleistocene.

Birch tar is well-documented for its use as an adhesive in the Middle Palaeolithic of Europe, but other uses remain poorly explored. Drawing from recent arguments suggesting multimodal uses of products such as ochre and birch tar, this study tests the antibiotic properties of birch tar produced experimentally with methods reconstructed from Middle Palaeolithic birch tar finds from Europe. Made from the bark of Betula pendula and Betula pubescens, widely documented for the European Late Pleistocene, we produced birch tar samples using an underground pit method, a condensation method, and a mode

Phenological trends of multi-taxonomic groups in Latvia, 1970-2018.

Phenology provides intimate insights into ongoing changes in nature and seasonality with respect to humans. In this study, the most complete volunteer observer phenological data set for the territory of Latvia from 1970 to 2018 was evaluated. The data set includes observations of 159 phases of eight taxonomical groups, as well as abiotic phenomena such as the first snow, last spring frost, and agrarian activities. With reducing dimensionality, a hierarchical cluster analysis was used to group the 66 phenological phases of most observations into 7 clusters. The largest changes were observed in

Clinico-immunologic evaluation of allergy to Himalayan tree pollen in atopic subjects in India--a new record.

Exposure to local pollen allergens has a direct bearing on the prevalence of allergic symptoms among the inhabiting atopic population. The populations in the Himalayas and around it are exposed to a variety of pollen grains from trees growing in the region, but the pollen-population interaction has not been clinically investigated. Himalayan tree pollen from five different taxa, i.e. Alnus nitida (AN), Betula utilis (BU), Cedrus deodara (CD), Mallotus phillipensis (MP) and Quercus incana (QI) were evaluated for their allergenicity in the Indian population by in vivo (skin prick test) and in vi

A DNA-binding protein capture technology that purifies proteins by directly isolating the target DNA.

DNA-protein interactions are critical to almost all cellular functions, and identification of the proteins that bind to an DNA site of interest (gene-centered approach) is an important investigation area. However, gene-centered methods are mainly based on DNA hybridization to isolate target proteins, which is complex and inefficient. Here, we built a gene-centered approach involving direct isolation of target DNA, termed protein capture based on biolistic transformation (PCaB). The target DNA was labeled with biotin and cyanine 3 (Cy3) at its 5' and 3' DNA ends, respectively, and introduced in

Clinical study of a spray containing birch juice for repairing sensitive skin.

Sensitive skin is described as an unpleasant sensory response to a stimulus that should not cause a sensation. Sensitive skin affects an increasing proportion of the population. Sixty-seven participants who tested positive to lactic acid sting test were recruited and randomized into two groups to observe the clinical efficacy and safety of a new birch juice spray for repairing sensitive skin. One group used test spray A, while the other group used spray B as a control. Both groups were sprayed six times daily for 28 days. Noninvasive testing instruments were used to measure stratum corneum hyd

Mating Behavior and Reproductive Biology of Emerald Ash Borer (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) and Two of Its Native Congeners, the Twolined Chestnut Borer and the Bronze Birch Borer.

We studied the mating behavior and reproductive biology of three members of the genus Agrilus: the bronze birch borer, Agrilus anxius Gory; the twolined chestnut borer, Agrilus bilineatus (Weber); and the emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire. All three species share a highly stereotyped mating behavior. However, the copulation duration of A. planipennis was 90% longer than that of its two congeners. Female reproductive tracts of the three species were anatomically similar, as were the spermatophores. Within the spermatophores, sperm were single in A. anxius and A. bilineatus, while

Foliar methyl salicylate emissions indicate prolonged aphid infestation on silver birch and black alder.

It is well documented that when plants are damaged by insects they respond by emitting a range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). While there have been numerous reports concerning VOCs induced by chewing herbivores, there are relatively few studies detailing the VOCs induced by aphid feeding. The effects of aphid feeding on VOCs emitted by boreal forest trees have been particularly neglected. Herbivore-induced VOCs have relevance to direct and indirect plant defence and atmospheric chemistry. In this study, we analysed the VOCs emitted by Betula pendula (Roth) and Alnus glutinosa (L.) Defense of winter-dormant Alaska paper birch against snowshoe hares.

Mature growth-phase internodes of Alaska paper birch (Betula resinifera) are preferred by the snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) over juvenile growth-phase internodes due to the low food value of the latter. While the mature over juvenile preferencec cannot be explained by the levels of inorganic nutrients or gross chemical fractions (resins or phenols), it can be explained by the striking differences in secondary metabolites of the two growth phases. The principle compound which renders the juvenile phase internodes unpalatable is papyriferic acid, a triterpene which is a demonstrated feeding d
