Processes in cognitive behavior therapy for social anxiety disorder: Predicting subsequent symptom change.

Although cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for social anxiety disorder, little is known about the processes during treatment that bring about change. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the proposed processes of change according to the cognitive model of social anxiety disorder predicted subsequent symptom reduction in CBT delivered as therapist-guided bibliotherapy. We analyzed data from patients with social anxiety disorder (N = 61) who participated in an effectiveness trial of CBT in primary care. Seven putative processes and outcome (i.e., social anxie

"If there is a tension about something, I can solve it": A qualitative investigation of change processes in a trial of brief problem-solving interventions for common adolescent mental health problems in India.

OBJECTIVES: There is limited understanding of change processes and long-term effects of low-intensity psychosocial interventions. We investigated these aspects in two brief problem-solving intervention formats for adolescents with elevated mental health symptoms and associated distress/impairment. METHODS: This qualitative study was nested within a school-based randomized controlled trial in New Delhi, India, which compared two problem-solving intervention formats: a lay counsellor-led format supported by printed materials (intervention arm) and printed problem-solving materials alone ("bibli

Efficacy of a behavioral self-help treatment with or without therapist guidance for co-morbid and primary insomnia--a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioral therapy is treatment of choice for insomnia, but availability is scarce. Self-help can increase availability at low cost, but evidence for its efficacy is limited, especially for the typical insomnia patient with co-morbid problems. We hypothesized that a cognitive behaviorally based self-help book is effective to treat insomnia in individuals, also with co-morbid problems, and that the effect is enhanced by adding brief therapist telephone support. METHODS: Volunteer sample; 133 media-recruited adults with insomnia. History of sleep difficulties (mean [SD]) 1

[Internet-based approaches in the therapy of eating disorders].

Recent technological developments of communication media offer new approaches to diagnostic and therapeutic interactions with patients. One major development is Internet-based primary prevention in vulnerable individuals not yet suffering as well as the development of new therapeutic approaches for affected individuals based on the experiences of guided self-help through CD, DVD or bibliotherapy. The eating disorder literature shows several interesting, partly controlled and randomized, studies on bulimia nervosa, a few studies on binge eating disorder and no studies on anorexia nervosa. As pa

Effectiveness of an internet-based self-help intervention for improving mental health in individuals with obesity: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with chronic somatic diseases such as obesity often develop comorbid depressive symptoms. E-mental health interventions are an innovative and effective treatment option within a stepped care approach. Studies have shown that acceptance and adherence are higher when they are tailored to the specific needs of the target group. This study protocol describes a randomised controlled trial (RCT) of an internet-based self-help intervention, Fit4Mood, to improve mental health in the high-risk group of adults with obesity. The objective of the @ktivPLUS research project is to eva

Stepped-Care Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Children on the Autism Spectrum with Co-occurring Anxiety.

This trial examined stepped-care cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) among 96 autistic youth with co-occurring anxiety. Step 1 included an open trial of parent-led, therapist-guided bibliotherapy. Step 2 was family-based CBT for those who did not respond to Step 1 or maintenance for those who did. Eighteen participants (28%) who completed Step 1 responded. Responders reported significantly lower pre-treatment anxiety, internalizing symptoms, and functional impairment than non-responders. After Steps 1 and 2, 80% of completers (55% intent-to-treat) were responders. Anxiety, impairment, and ASD

A comparison of three therapeutic formats in the treatment of secondary orgasmic dysfunction.

The goal of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of three therapeutic formats: Standard Couple Therapy, Group Therapy, and Minimal Contact Bibliotherapy (self-help) in the treatment of 23 couples in which the wife was suffering from secondary orgasmic dysfunction. The results indicate that a cognitive-behavioral sex therapy program is clearly effective in changing a wide range of subjective satisfaction and behavioral measures, with concurrence of the husbands' and wives' data providing further strength to these findings. Differences in outcome which were elicited in the three ex

Remote cognitive behaviour therapy for social anxiety disorder: A meta-analysis.

Remote cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD) has the potential to improve access to treatment by reducing economic, geographic, and psychological barriers. The aim of this study was to use a meta-analytic approach to examine the efficacy of the different remote CBT methods for treating SAD. A systematic electronic database search was used to identify 31 studies (n = 2905; mean age range: 24.73-41.65 years; mean female representation = 60.2 %). Pooled within-group analyses indicated large effect sizes from pre-treatment to post-treatment (Hedges' g = 1.06; 95 % CI:

Social Stories for children with disabilities.

A review of the empirical research literature on Social Stories is presented, including a descriptive review and single-subject meta-analysis of appropriate studies. Examination of data suggests the effects of Social Stories are highly variable. Interpretations of extant studies are frequently confounded by inadequate participant description and the use of Social Stories in combination with other interventions. It is unclear whether particular components of Social Stories are central to their efficacy. Data on maintenance and generalization are also limited. Social Stories stand as a promising

Rehabilitation aspects of human sexuality.

The PLISSIT model is a comprehensive program that combines educational strategies with behavioral intervention to integrate human sexuality into the initial rehabilitation of spinal cord-injured persons. Sexuality is treated as a health care issue as important as bowel and bladder care, skin care, psychosocial issues, mobility, self-care and vocational concerns. Patients admitted to the Spinal Cord Injury Program are surrounded by a supportive milieu and an interdisciplinary staff who comfortably incorporate sexuality into discussions about catheter care, positioning, communication styles, ass

Efficacy of an online cognitive behavioral therapy program developed for healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic: the REduction of STress (REST) study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The acknowledgment of the mental health toll of the COVID-19 epidemic in healthcare workers has increased considerably as the disease evolved into a pandemic status. Indeed, high prevalence rates of depression, sleep disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been reported in Chinese healthcare workers during the epidemic peak. Symptoms of psychological distress are expected to be long-lasting and have a systemic impact on healthcare systems, warranting the need for evidence-based psychological treatments aiming at relieving immediate stress and preventing the onset

The effects of trauma and non-trauma literature on relieving PTSD of Chinese undergraduates-a randomized controlled trial.

Traditional psychological interventions for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) face limitations in university settings due to resource constraints, stigma, and low student engagement. This randomized controlled trial explored the effectiveness of reading-based interventions-trauma literature, non-trauma literature, and a control condition-on PTSD symptoms among 105 Chinese university students. Over an 8-week period, the trauma literature group showed the largest reduction in PTSD symptoms (p < 0.001), followed by the non-trauma literature group (p < 0.001), with minimal change in the contro
