2 cases of damage to peripheral nerves following bicycle riding are described in males aged 13 and 35 years, respectively. In 1 there was injury to the ulnar nerve at the level of the wrist, with hypesthesia of the 2 ulnar digits and paresis of intrinsic muscles. In the other case there was involvement of the pudendal nerves with numbness of the buttocks and genitalia, and with difficulty in achieving erection. After cycling was stopped for a few weeks the symptoms disappeared spontaneously, with full recovery. Once symptoms subside completely cycling can be resumed, although with certain prec

Many Parkinson's disease (PD) patients are able to ride a bicycle despite being severely compromised by gait disturbances up to freezing of gait. This review [PROSPERO CRD 42019137386] aimed to find out, which PD-related symptoms improve from bicycling, and which type of bicycling exercise would be most beneficial. Following a systematic database literature search, peer-reviewed studies with randomized control trials (RCT) and with non-randomized trials (NRCT) investigating the interventional effects of bicycling on PD patients were included. A quality analysis addressing reporting, design and

Bicycling is the leading cause of sports-related traumatic brain injury. Most of the current bike helmets are made of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam and ultimately designed to prevent blunt trauma, e.g., skull fracture. However, these helmets have limited effectiveness in preventing brain injuries. With the availability of high-rate micro-electrical-mechanical systems sensors and high energy density batteries, a new class of helmets, i.e., expandable helmets, can sense an impending collision and expand to protect the head. By allowing softer liner medium and larger helmet sizes, this novel ap

BACKGROUND: Structural weakness may occur within bicycles (eg, during manufacture or impact) and may result in sudden failure and serious injuries. While some indicators of structural weakness may be detected by visual inspection, others require more advanced non-destructive tests. Available research is yet to adequately examine bicycle riders' awareness and experience of the structural weakness in bicycles, or their knowledge and use of testing methods.
METHODS: An online cross-section survey of 298 bicycle riders was conducted to address these knowledge gaps.
RESULTS: 11.4% of respondents

Social and medical consequences of 278 children and 264 adults injured in bicycle accidents and seen in two hospitals in Helsinki in 1985-86 were analyzed. Information was collected from patient records, by means of a special questionnaire and by telephone interview. A child outpatient required 1.7 and a child inpatient 3.0 physician visits on an average, while adults required 2.2 and 4.9 visits, respectively. The average duration of hospital stay was 8 days for hospitalized adults and 6 days for children. Rehabilitative care outside the hospital was received by 6% of the adult outpatients and

Overuse knee injuries are common in bicycling and are often attributed to poor bicycle-fit. Bicycle-fit for knee health focuses on setting saddle height to elicit a minimum knee flexion angle of 25-40°. Equations to predict saddle height include a single input, resulting in a likely suboptimal bicycle-fit. The purpose of this work was to develop an equation to predict saddle height from anthropometrics, bicycle geometry, and user-defined joint kinematics. Methods: Forty healthy adults (17 women, 23 men; mean (SD): 28.6 (7.2) years; 24.2 (2.6) kg/m2) participated. Kinematic analyses were conduct

IMPORTANCE: Bicycling is an increasingly common activity in the United States that is often associated with fall injuries to the head and face. Although helmets lessen head injury, their role in reducing facial injuries is less clear; therefore, it is important to understand the protective capacity for the face in current helmet design.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the conventional bicycle helmet's association with the rate of facial injury after bicycle crashes.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study accessed records from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2014, from the

INTRODUCTION: Cycling is a major activity for adolescents in Canada and potential differences exist in bicycling-related risk and experience of injury by population subgroup. The overall aim of this study was to inform health equity interventions by profiling stratified analytic methods and identifying potential inequities associated with bicycle-related injury and the use of bicycle helmets among Canadian youth. The two objectives of this study were: (1) To examine national patterns in bicycle ridership and also bicycle helmet use among Canadian youth in a stratified analysis by potentially v

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate possible benefits of a school based bicycle safety education program ("Bike Ed") on the risk of bicycle injury in children.
METHODS: A population based case-control study was undertaken in a region of Melbourne, Australia. Cases were children presenting at hospital emergency departments with injuries received while riding bicycles. Controls were recruited by calling randomly selected telephone numbers. Data were collected by personal interview.
RESULTS: Analysis, based on 148 cases and 130 controls aged 9 to 14 years, showed no evidence of a protective effect and sugg

Cycling is a daily activity that needs a high demand of human-bicycle fitness. However, studies into the fitness or ergonomic aspects are very little. In this study, the simulated 20 min bicycling test were performed by 26 male participants under 5 handle height conditions. Body joint angles and external cervical/lumbar spine lordosis were measured at the initial and cycling after 20 min. Results show that different handle heights did cause various trunk inclinations. Trunk inclination was negatively and positively correlated with lumbosacral angle (r = -0.620, p < 0.001) and cervical angle (r

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Overseas research shows that fatality and injury risks per cyclist and pedestrian are lower when there are more cyclists and pedestrians. Do Australian data follow the same exponential 'growth rule' where (Injuries)/(Amount of cycling) is proportional to ((Amount of cycling)-0.6)?
METHOD: Fatality and injury risks were compared using three datasets: 1) fatalities and amounts of cycling in Australian States in the 1980s; 2) fatality and injury rates over time in Western Australia as cycling levels increased; and 3) deaths, serious head injuries and other serious injuries to cy

High velocity impact by handlebar is a rare cause of abdominal wall hernia following blunt trauma. We report a case of bicycle handlebar induced traumatic hernia with jejunal perforation. This case demonstrates that presentation of a traumatic hernia can be delayed and that computed tomographic scanning is useful in confirming the diagnosis. Surgical exploration with primary repair of the defect is the definitive treatment in cases of traumatic hernia.

Herein, we reviewed the pattern and mechanisms of injuries resulting from bicycle accidents in Tehran. During one year of trauma registry in six general hospitals, 8,000 trauma patients who had sustained injuries within a week before admission and hospitalized for more than 24 hours were studied. Bicycle injuries comprised 2.1% (n=170) of all cases admitted during the studied period. Males were injured more often than females (M:F ratio=8:1). Seventy-seven point one percent of the patients were younger than 20 years. None of the patients had used helmets while being injured. A considerable pro
