Mental health aspects of binge eating disorder: A cross-sectional mixed-methods study of binge eating disorder experts' perspectives.

Binge eating disorder has high comorbidity with a variety of mental health diagnoses and significantly impairs quality of life. This mixed-methods cross-sectional survey study aimed to collect information from experts in the field about mental health issues pertaining to adult binge eating disorder pathology. Fourteen expert binge eating disorder researchers and clinicians were identified based on history of NIH R01 funding, relevant PubMed-indexed publications, active practice in the field, leadership in related professional societies, and/or distinction in popular press. Comparison of patients with bulimia nervosa, obese patients with binge eating disorder, and nonobese patients with binge eating disorder.

This study compared patients with bulimia nervosa (BN), obese patients with binge eating disorder (BED), and nonobese patients with BED. One hundred sixty-two adult women consecutively evaluated for outpatient clinical trials who met DSM-IV criteria for BN, purging type (N = 46) or for BED (N = 79 obese and N = 37 nonobese) were compared using the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI). The three groups differed significantly on two (drive for thinness and body dissatisfaction) of the three eating-related scales and on all five of the general personality scales of the EDI. Reliability of the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire in patients with binge eating disorder.

This study examined the test-retest reliability of the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q) in patients with binge eating disorder (BED). Short-term (mean days = 4.8; SD = 3.6) test-retest reliability of the EDE was examined in a sample of 86 patients with BED. Test-retest reliability was excellent for objective bulimic episodes (correlation = .84), but poor to unacceptable for subjective bulimic episodes and objective overeating episodes (correlations = .51 and .39, respectively). Test-retest reliabilities were good for the EDE-Q scales (correlations = .66 to .77), albeit somewha

Binge eating and binge eating disorder in a small-scale, indigenous society: the view from Fiji.

OBJECTIVE: Although the cross-cultural prevalence of anorexia and bulimia nervosa has been investigated in multiple studies, little is known about the prevalence and correlates of binge eating and binge eating disorder (BED) cross-culturally. No published studies to date have explored BED in small-scale, indigenous, or developing societies. The current study investigated the prevalence and correlates of binge eating in a community sample of Fijian women living in rural Fiji. METHODS: Fifty ethnic Fijian women completed a self-report measure developed for this study on dieting and attitudes to

Binge eating disorder and bulimia nervosa: differences in the quality and quantity of binge eating episodes.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to examine the differences in the quantity and quality of binges between binge eating disorder (BED) and bulimia nervosa. METHOD: Patients (N = 77) seeking treatment for eating disorders were assessed on binge content. RESULTS: Results suggest no differences in binge quantity with BED and bulimia, but there were differences in the binge quality. The binges of bulimics were higher in carbohydrates and sugar than those with BED. DISCUSSION: The higher levels of obesity of our BED individuals may account for the lack of differences between those with bulimia and BE

Binge eating disorder and night eating syndrome: a comparative study of disordered eating.

The authors compared eating patterns, disordered eating, features of eating disorders, and depressive symptoms in persons with binge eating disorder (BED; n = 177), with night eating syndrome (NES; n = 68), and in an overweight comparison group without BED or NES (comparison; n = 45). Participants completed semistructured interviews and several established measures. Depressive symptoms were greater in the BED and NES groups than in the comparison group. NES participants ate fewer meals during the day and more during the night than BED and comparison participants, whereas BED participants ate m

Incidence of chaotic eating behaviors in binge-eating disorder: contributing factors.

Because dieting is not as common in patients with binge-eating disorder (BED) as among patients with bulimia or anorexia nervosa, the authors assessed the incidence, frequency, and contributing factors of semistarvation-like eating patterns in BED patients in this study, the first to explore such behaviors in a clinical population. They administered the Semistarvation-Associated Behaviors Scale (SSABS) to 54 women seeking BED treatment and to 29 controls. The aberrant eating behaviors among BED clients were associated with current dieting and certain BED criteria, (p < .05). The strongest cont

[Eating disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia, binge eating].

We present an overview of three different eating disorders which seem to have an increasing prevalence, especially among young women between 12 and 20 years of age. Anorexia and bulimia nervosa are "threshold disorders" which usually become manifest for the first time during the transition from childhood to early adult life. Eating disorders are chronic disorders and often take a course of 6 or more years. Remission, improvements and symptom change can be expected even after many years of the disorder. Psychiatric comorbidity which occurs in more than 50% of eating disordered patients is of pr

Assessing the functional nature of binge eating in the eating disorders.

This study explored the functional nature of binge eating through the development of a new self-report instrument called the Binge Eating Adjective Checklist. Participants were 405 adult females who presented to a specialized eating disorders clinic. A subset of participants with bulimia nervosa also completed additional psychometrics and treatment. Those participants who reported greater reductions in negative affective and somatic states during a binge episode were also more distressed on measures of perfectionism, self-esteem, ineffectiveness, and interceptive awareness. They were also less

Factor structure of the eating disorder examination interview in patients with binge-eating disorder.

Despite the widespread use of the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) as a primary assessment instrument in studies of eating and weight disorders, little is known about the psychometric aspects of this interview measure. The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the factor structure of the EDE interview in a large series of patients with binge-eating disorder (BED). Participants were 688 treatment-seeking patients with BED who were reliably administered the EDE interview by trained research clinicians at three research centers. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) performed on EDE intervie

Social anxiety and self-consciousness in binge eating disorder: associations with eating disorder psychopathology.

OBJECTIVE: Research has consistently shown that anxiety disorders are common among individuals with eating disorders. Although social phobia has been found to be highly associated with eating disorders, less is known about social anxiety in individuals with binge eating disorder (BED). The present study examined associations between social anxiety and self-consciousness with body mass index (BMI) and eating disorder psychopathology in BED. METHODS: Participants were 113 overweight or obese treatment-seeking men and women with BED. Participants were administered semistructural diagnostic clini

Using the eating disorder examination to identify the specific psychopathology of binge eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The clinical features of binge eating disorder (BED) are not well established. Therefore, a comprehensive assessment of the specific psychopathology of BED as compared to anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) is warranted. This comparison was the aim of the present study. METHOD: Detailed ratings from an investigator-based interview, the Eating Disorders Examination (EDE), were compared across three groups of female patients: those with BED, AN, and BN, as well as normal-weight and overweight control subjects. RESULTS: When comparing BED to AN and BN, patients with BED ha

Validation of the Greek version of the Binge Eating Scale in a sample of binge eating disorder patients.

Binge eating disorder (BED), the most prevalent eating disorder, carries significant physical and psychological consequences. Therefore, there is a continuous need to assess binge eating symptomatology and evaluate the effectiveness of various therapeutic interventions. The Binge Eating Scale (BES), which is a self-administered questionnaire, is widely used to assess binge eating in obese people. It examines the person' s experience of binge eating and the emotional, cognitive, and behavioural symptoms associated with it. The purpose of the present study was to translate and adapt BES in Greek

OBJECTIVE: To estimate relative suicidality risk associated with binge-eating disorder (BED). METHODS: Retrospective study of patients identified as having BED (N = 1042) and a matched general population cohort (N = 10,420) from the Optum electronic health record database between January 2009 and September 2015. Patients had ≥1 outpatient encounter with a provider who recognized BED during the 12-month baseline preceding entry date. Incidence and relative risk of suicidality were assessed. RESULTS: Incidence per 1000 person-years (95% CI) of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, respective

Family Functioning in Adolescents with Binge-Eating Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: While the importance of family factors on the development and maintenance of adolescent anorexia and bulimia nervosa has been well documented, virtually nothing is known about these impacts in binge-eating disorder (BED). Therefore, this study sought to examine family functioning (FF) in families of adolescents with BED. METHOD: A total of 40 adolescents meeting diagnostic criteria for full-syndrome or sub-threshold BED were compared to 40 matched adolescents without any eating disorder symptoms (CG). Adolescents', mothers', and fathers' perspectives of various FF components were a

[Binge eating disorder: Links with personality and emotionality].

OBJECTIVES: Our two objectives were: (1) to investigate the relationship between binge eating disorder, dimensions of personality (according to the Big Five model of Costa and McCrae) and those of emotionality in the "tripartite" model of emotions of Watson and Clark; (2) to evaluate the correspondence between the Binge Eating Scale (BES) and the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI-2) scores. METHOD: Four self-administered questionnaires were completed on a shared doc website: the EDI-2, the BES, the BFI-Fr (Big Five Inventory-French version) and the EPN-31 (Positive and Negative Emotionality Scal

[The treatment of binge eating disorder - a review].

The binge eating disorder is a relatively new type of eating disorders, which was first described in 1992, and became a distinct nosological entity in the system of DSM-5 in 2013. Its central symptom is the binge, which is not followed by compensatory behaviours as in bulimia nervosa. Therefore, the patients are generally obese. The prevalence of the disorder is 1-3% in the general population, but much higher in help-seeking obese subjects. The two main goals of the therapy is body weight reduction, and the cessation of binges. In the pharmacotherapy of binge eating disorder the antidepressant

Regimented and lifestyle restraint in binge eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This study tested the psychometric properties of two commonly used measures of dietary restraint, the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire and the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire. METHOD: Restraint data from 512 overweight/obese participants with binge eating disorder (BED) were subjected to exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. RESULTS: Factor analyses of the restraint variables indicated a two-factor solution, interpreted as "Regimented" and "Lifestyle" restraint. Stepwise regression analyses revealed that Regimented restraint was more predictive of eating patholo
