Assessment of families for excess risk of lymphedema of the leg in a lymphatic filariasis-endemic area.

The influence of host genes on the distribution of lymphedema due to lymphatic filariasis is unknown. To assess this, pedigree and disease information were collected from lymphedema patients in a lymphatic filariasis-endemic area. These patients were female, with an average age of approximately 40 years, who were enrolled between June 1995 and July 1999 in a lymphedema treatment clinic, and from the rural Haitian community served by the clinic. Interviews were conducted between September 1998 and December 1999. Families with multiple lymphedema cases were of similar size, with an average of 15

Clinical and mycological study of scalp white piedra in the State of Paraíba, Brazil.

White piedra is a superficial mycoses characterized by nodules on the hair shaft, caused by the basidiomycetous yeasts. In the present study, clinical and mycological findings of scalp white piedra caused by Trichosporon spp. are related. Twenty three cases of scalp white piedra were observed with a high incidence in women (87%) and preschool children from 2 to 6 (74%) years old. These groups presented a relationship of dependence with this infection. Despite the low socio-economic status, poor standards of hygiene, (48% of the patients) as well as the fact that 30.4% of the children shared th

Count data regression modeling: an application to spontaneous abortion.

BACKGROUND: In India, around 20,000 women die every year due to abortion-related complications. In count data modeling, there is sometimes a prevalence of zero counts. This article is concerned with the estimation of various count regression models to predict the average number of spontaneous abortions among women in Punjab and few northern states in India. The study also assesses the factors associated with the number of spontaneous abortions. METHODS: This study includes 27,173 married women of Punjab obtained from the DLHS-4 survey (2012-13) to train the count models. The study predicts th

Distribution pattern of phthirapterans infesting certain common Indian birds.

The prevalence and frequency distribution patterns of 10 phthirapteran species infesting house sparrows, Indian parakeets, common mynas, and white breasted kingfishers were recorded in the district of Rampur, India, during 2004-05. The sample mean abundances, mean intensities, range of infestations, variance to mean ratios, values of the exponent of the negative binomial distribution, and the indices of discrepancy were also computed. Frequency distribution patterns of all phthirapteran species were skewed, but the observed frequencies did not correspond to the negative binomial distribution.

Resistance and tolerance: A hierarchical framework to compare individual versus family-level host contributions in an experimental amphibian-trematode system.

Hosts have two general strategies for mitigating the fitness costs of parasite exposure and infection: resistance and tolerance. The resistance-tolerance framework has been well developed in plant systems, but only recently has it been applied to animal-parasite interactions. However, difficulties associated with estimating fitness, controlling parasite exposure, and quantifying parasite burden have limited application of this framework to animal systems. Here, we used an experimental approach to quantify the relative influence of variation among host individuals and genetic families in determ

Bus accident analysis of routes with/without bus priority.

This paper summarises findings on road safety performance and bus-involved accidents in Melbourne along roads where bus priority measures had been applied. Results from an empirical analysis of the accident types revealed significant reduction in the proportion of accidents involving buses hitting stationary objects and vehicles, which suggests the effect of bus priority in addressing manoeuvrability issues for buses. A mixed-effects negative binomial (MENB) regression and back-propagation neural network (BPNN) modelling of bus accidents considering wider influences on accident rates at a rout

Prevalence of hydatidosis among donkeys in northern Jordan.

One hundred and thirty donkeys (Equus asinus), aged between 5 months and 14 years of age, from the Irbid Governorate in northern Jordan were necropsied between November 1997-May 1999. Of these animals, 16.9% had hydatid cysts in either their lungs and/or livers. No donkeys of 3 years of age or less were infected, where as 33.3% (22 of 66) aged 4 years or greater were infected. Intensity of infection increased with age in a linear fashion. The prevalence also increased with age approaching an asymptotic prevalence of 1 in the oldest animals. This implied there was minimal regulation of the para

The processes influencing the distribution of parasitic nematodes among naturally infected lambs.

The impact of mixed, nematode infection upon a group of animals will depend upon the number of nematodes present, how they are distributed among hosts and whether individuals that are heavily parasitized with one species are more likely to be heavily parasitized with other species. A survey of over 500 six-month-old, Scottish Blackface lambs from a single farm in Southwest Strathclyde identified 7 different categories of nematodes in the abomasum and small intestine. There were considerable differences among years and among nematodes in the prevalence and mean intensity of infection. Ostertagi

Distribution of chewing lice upon the polygynous peacock Pavo cristatus.

An opportunistic survey of louse distribution upon the peacock Pavo cristatus was undertaken following a cull of 23 birds from an English zoo. After complete skin and feather dissolution, 2 species of lice were retrieved, Goniodes pavonis and Amyrsidea minuta. The distribution of both louse species could be described by a negative binomial model. The significance of this is discussed in relation to transmission dynamics of lice in the atypical avian mating system found in the peacock, which involves no male parental care.

Precipitation, Climate Change, and Parasitism of Prairie Dogs by Fleas that Transmit Plague.

Fleas (Insecta: Siphonaptera) are hematophagous ectoparasites that can reduce the fitness of vertebrate hosts. Laboratory populations of fleas decline under dry conditions, implying that populations of fleas will also decline when precipitation is scarce under natural conditions. If precipitation and hence vegetative production are reduced, however, then herbivorous hosts might suffer declines in body condition and have weakened defenses against fleas, so that fleas will increase in abundance. We tested these competing hypotheses using information from 23 yr of research on 3 species of colonia

Inaccuracy of height information on driver's licenses.

Height is an important variable in identification. In cases involving decreased individuals, height is measured directly on the corpse or estimated from the skeleton. This postmortem measurement or estimation is then compared with antemortem records, usually the driver's license. The accuracy of the license information, however, has been questioned. To assess the accuracy of driver's license information, volunteers' statures were measured, and then these figures were compared with those printed on the subjects' licenses. Even in our comparatively young, well-educated sample, the license height

Influence analysis for the generalized Waring regression model.

In this paper, we consider a regression model under the generalized Waring distribution for modeling count data. We develop and implement local influence diagnostic techniques based on likelihood displacement. Also we develop case-deletion methods. The generalized Waring regression model is presented as a mixture of the Negative Binomial and the Beta II distributions, and it is compared to the Negative Binomial and Waring regression models. Estimation is performed by maximum likelihood function. The influence measures developed in this paper are applied to a Spanish football league data set. E

The disparity between observed and uniform distributions: a new look at parasite aggregation.

A simple new measure of parasite aggregation is described, the index of discrepancy (D). It quantifies the difference between the observed parasite distribution, and the hypothetical distribution that corresponds to the ideal case where all hosts harbour the same number of parasites. This index, computed for parasite distributions obtained from the literature, is compared to 2 other measures of aggregation, the variance to mean ratio and the parameter k of the negative binomial distribution. Both k and D indicate that aggregation decreases when the prevalence of infection and the mean number o

Echinococcus granulosus larvae in the livers of sheep in Tunisia: the effects of host age.

A baseline survey of hepatic hydatid disease in sheep in Tunisia was undertaken. Prevalence and intensity (i.e. the number of cysts/liver) were both found to increase with age. The age-specific trends in these two parameters indicate that Echinococcus granulosus is in an endemic equilibrium steady-state in Tunisia and therefore amenable to control. The distribution of parasites within the livers of the hosts followed a negative binomial distribution. The negative binomial constant, k, increased with age, indicating that there was a lower propensity for aggregation of parasites in the hosts as

An empirical tool to evaluate the safety of cyclists: Community based, macro-level collision prediction models using negative binomial regression.

Today, North American governments are more willing to consider compact neighborhoods with increased use of sustainable transportation modes. Bicycling, one of the most effective modes for short trips with distances less than 5km is being encouraged. However, as vulnerable road users (VRUs), cyclists are more likely to be injured when involved in collisions. In order to create a safe road environment for them, evaluating cyclists' road safety at a macro level in a proactive way is necessary. In this paper, different generalized linear regression methods for collision prediction model (CPM) deve

A simulation study of the performance of statistical models for count outcomes with excessive zeros.

BACKGROUND: Outcome measures that are count variables with excessive zeros are common in health behaviors research. Examples include the number of standard drinks consumed or alcohol-related problems experienced over time. There is a lack of empirical data about the relative performance of prevailing statistical models for assessing the efficacy of interventions when outcomes are zero-inflated, particularly compared with recently developed marginalized count regression approaches for such data. METHODS: The current simulation study examined five commonly used approaches for analyzing count ou

Sex ratio and sexual dimorphism of three lice species with contrasting prevalence parasitizing the house sparrow.

Female-biased sex ratio is a common phenomenon in parasites; however, the cause and consequence of the skewed sex ratio is less well known. Here, we studied the difference in sex ratio, a possible mechanism responsible for the development of unbalanced proportion of sexes and its consequences on sexual size dimorphism, between 3 louse species parasitizing the house sparrow Passer domesticus. Philopterus fringillae was more prevalent than Sturnidoecus refractariolus and Brueelia cyclothorax. As expected, the most common species, which was probably least affected by isolation and, hence, inbreed

On the regularities of distribution of Hypoderma bovis De Geer larvae parasitizing cattle herds in different parts of the range of this warble fly.

The type and parameters of the distribution of the second and third instar larvae of Hypoderma bovis in cattle herds in Czechoslovakia (54 herds, 7233 head), Mongolia (20 herds, 1809 head) and the USSR (48 herds, 4978 head) were studied. A statistical analysis showed a) that in the majority of cases negative binomial distribution serves as a model of the distribution of larvae with sufficient reliability; b) that the regularity of dependence of the distribution exponent k of the negative binomial distribution on the incidence of infestation remains constant in different parts of the range of t
