Diminishing Mercury Bioaccumulation in Zooplankton along an Estuarine Salinity Gradient.

Estuarine transition zones (ETZs) are biogeochemically complex, nutrient-rich environments supporting diverse and productive food webs. They may also be sites of microbial production of methylmercury (MeHg) and bioaccumulation of this neurotoxicant at the base of the food web. However, the environmental drivers controlling these mechanisms are unclear. We studied the pattern of MeHg bioaccumulation in zooplankton along the 200 km ETZ of a large North American estuary, the St. Lawrence Estuary (Québec, Canada). Our approach integrated the dynamic variation in ETZ geochemistry, focusing on MeHg

Ecology and environmental characteristics influence methylmercury bioaccumulation in coastal invertebrates.

Quantifying mercury (Hg) concentrations in invertebrates is fundamental to determining risk for bioaccumulation in higher trophic level organisms in coastal food webs. Bioaccumulation is influenced by local mercury concentrations, site geochemistry, individual feeding ecologies, and trophic position. We sampled seven species of invertebrates from five coastal sites in the Minas Basin, Bay of Fundy, and determined body concentrations of methylmercury (MeHg), total mercury (THg), and stable isotopes of nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C). To evaluate the effects of environmental chemistry on Hg pr

Mercury bioaccumulation in stream fish from an agriculturally-dominated watershed.

Bioaccumulation of mercury in freshwater fish is a complex process driven by environmental and biological factors. In this study, we assessed mercury in fish from four tributaries to the Red Deer River, Alberta, Canada, which are characterized by high surface water mercury concentrations. We used carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotopes to examine relationships between fish total mercury (THg) concentrations, food web dynamics and patterns in unfiltered THg and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations. We found that THg concentrations exceeded the tissue residue quality guideline for the p

One Health perspectives on veterinary residues and bioaccumulation in marine mussels.

The increase in pharmaceutical residues and environmental contaminants, including heavy metals and biotoxins, in coastal ecosystems represents a critical threat to global health. Mussels (Mytilus spp.), as sessile filter feeders, serve as primary bioaccumulators and biological indicators of this chemical pressure, yet their toxicological role in human health is often underestimated. This review explores the physiological and toxicological effects of the accumulation of complex contaminants and pharmaceutical residues, specifically including veterinary drugs that reach the marine environment th

Grazing the plastisphere: Trophic transfer of the bioaccumulated metals to Artemia salina.

In any aquatic environment, microplastics (MPs) are rapidly colonized by microbial communities, forming a biofilm known as plastisphere, which modifies their surface properties. The biofilm has been shown to dramatically increase metal accumulation. Yet, the impact of biofilm community structure on the level of the metallic load remains poorly understood, especially the role of seawater nutrients. In addition, contaminants bioaccumulation raises the question of the grazing (or ingestion) of biofouled MPs by higher trophic level. To address this issue, the development and growth of the plastisp

Enhanced Susceptibility of Methylmercury Bioaccumulation into Seston of the Laurentian Great Lakes.

Mercury concentrations in the Laurentian Great Lakes waters are among the lowest reported in the literature, while game fish concentrations approach consumption advisory limits, particularly in Lakes Superior, Huron, and Michigan, indicating efficient methylmercury transfer from water to game fish. To determine if increased transfer efficiency is evident within the lower food web, we measured (2010-2018) mercury and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in water, and in size-sieved seston, dietary tracers (carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios), phytoplankton methylmercury bioaccumulation, and methylmer

Wetland Management Strategy to Reduce Mercury in Water and Bioaccumulation in Fish.

Wetland environments provide numerous ecosystem services but also facilitate methylmercury (MeHg) production and bioaccumulation. We developed a wetland-management technique to reduce MeHg concentrations in wetland fish and water. We physically modified seasonal wetlands by constructing open- and deep-water treatment cells at the downstream end of seasonal wetlands to promote naturally occurring MeHg-removal processes. We assessed the effectiveness of reducing mercury (Hg) concentrations in surface water and western mosquitofish that were caged at specific locations within 4 control and 4 trea

Numerical evaluation of bioaccumulation and depuration kinetics of PAHs in Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are important organic pollutants in the aquatic environment due to their persistence and bioaccumulation potential both in organisms and in sediments. Benzo(a)anthracene (BaA) and phenanthrene (PHE), which are in the priority pollutant list of the U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), are selected as model compounds of the present study. Bioaccumulation and depuration experiments with local Mediterranean mussel species, Mytilus galloprovincialis were used as the basis of the study. Mussels were selected as bioindicator organisms due to their broad

Bioaccumulation and biomagnification of mercury in African lakes: the importance of trophic status.

Despite the global prevalence of both mercury (Hg) contamination and anthropogenic eutrophication, relatively little is known about the behavior of Hg in eutrophic and hypereutrophic systems or the effects of lake trophic status on Hg uptake and trophodynamics. In the current study we explore Hg trophodynamics at 8 tropical East African study sites ranging from mesotrophic to hypereutrophic, in order to assess the influence of lake trophic status on Hg uptake and biomagnification. Comprehensive water, plankton and fish samples were collected for analysis of total mercury (THg) and stable carbo

Bioaccumulation of heavy metals by Phragmites australis cultivated in synthesized substrates.

Accumulation of heavy metals from various oxides with adsorbed cadmium by wetland plant Phragmites australis was studied to evaluate the fate of heavy metals in the sediment of constructed wetlands. Hoagland solution was used as nutrition supply, and single metal oxide with adsorbed cadmium was applied as contaminant to study the accumulation characteristics of cadmium and the substrate metals by P. australis. After 45-d treatment, the bioaccumulation degree in root followed the order: Al(OH)3 > Al2O3 > Fe3O4 > MnO2 > FeOOH. Heavy metals absorbed by P. australis were largely immobilized by the

Persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic substances in fish: human health considerations.

Fish are important dietary items that provide essential nutrients. Fish however, bioaccumulate monomethyl mercury (MMHg) and organo-halogenated pollutants (OHP) that are persistent bioaccumulative and toxic substances (PBTS). Unlike man-made OHP, MMHg is mainly of natural origin but background concentrations of aquatic systems are determined by the environmental Hg-methylating potential. Industrial activities can modulate environmental discharges and fish bioaccumulation of PBTS. Fish and seafood consumption are associated with human body load of PBTS, but farming practices that utilize fishme

A factor influence study of trace element bioaccumulation in moss bags.

Moss bags of Rhynchostegium riparioides were exposed to different water concentrations of 11 trace elements under laboratory conditions, according to a saturated fractional factorial design (67 treated combinations), with the aim of measuring (1) element uptake and (2) the main effects and first-order interactions of influent factors. Bioaccumulation was directly proportional to water concentration, but the uptake ratio (ranging from 10(2) to 10(5)) also depended on the concentration of other metals. The highest uptake ratios were observed for Al, Cu, Cr, Hg, and Pb. The multiple regression mo

Interactive effects of metals in mixtures on bioaccumulation in the amphipod Hyalella azteca.

Mixtures were produced of "equi-toxic" concentrations of 10 elements at the 4-week LC25 for Hyalella azteca. Bioaccumulation was determined in 1-week exposures. The first mixtures tested included seven elements; As, Cd, Co, Cr, Ni, Pb and Tl. Copper, Mn and Zn were not included in the initial tests due to potential confounding effects, such as regulation of Cu and Zn by H. azteca and the high concentrations of Mn required to be "equi-toxic", which might cause adsorption of metals to Mn hydroxides if these were formed. The second set of tests included the seven element mixture in combination wi

Bioaccumulation of mercury in a vestimentiferan worm living in Kagoshima Bay, Japan.

The present study reports on the mercury concentrations of the vestimentiferan worm, Lamellibrachia satsuma, (Annelida: Pogonophora) found near hydrothermal vents at a depth of 80-100 m in the northern parts of Kagoshima Bay. The vestimentiferan worms had total mercury concentrations of 238 ng/g in the anterior muscle of the body and 164 ng/g in the posterior trophosome. Methylmercury constituted only 7.6% of total mercury detected anteriorly and 16.3% posteriorly. The mean total mercury concentration in filtrated ambient seawater of the worm habitat was 1.1 ng/l. The worm should accumulate me

Endophytic bacteria stimulate mercury phytoremediation by modulating its bioaccumulation and volatilization.

The quantification, efficiency, and possible mechanisms of mercury phytoremediation by endophytic bacteria are poorly understood. Here we selected 8 out of 34 previously isolated endophytic bacterial strains with a broad resistance profile to metals and 11 antibiotics: Acinetobacter baumannii BacI43, Bacillus sp. BacI34, Enterobacter sp. BacI14, Klebsiella pneumoniae BacI20, Pantoea sp. BacI23, Pseudomonas sp. BacI7, Pseudomonas sp. BacI38, and Serratia marcescens BacI56. Except for Klebsiella pneumoniae BacI20, the other seven bacterial strains promoted maize growth on a mercury-contaminated

Mercury bioaccumulation in temperate forest food webs associated with headwater streams.

The soils and food webs associated with mid to high elevation, forested, headwater streams in northeastern North America are potential hotspots for mercury (Hg) methylation and bioaccumulation, but are not well studied. Our goals were to quantify total Hg (THg) and methyl Hg (MeHg) concentrations in soils and terrestrial food webs associated with headwater streams of northern hardwood forests to identify predictors of small-scale spatial variation in Hg bioaccumulation. We sampled soil characteristics that promote Hg methylation including pH, sulfur and calcium content, and organic matter. To

Mercury cycling in stream ecosystems. 3. Trophic dynamics and methylmercury bioaccumulation.

Trophic dynamics (community composition and feeding relationships) have been identified as important drivers of methylmercury (MeHg) bioaccumulation in lakes, reservoirs, and marine ecosystems. The relative importance of trophic dynamics and geochemical controls on MeHg bioaccumulation in streams, however, remains poorly characterized. MeHg bioaccumulation was evaluated in eight stream ecosystems across the United States (Oregon, Wisconsin, and Florida) spanning large ranges in climate, landscape characteristics, atmospheric Hg deposition, and stream chemistry. Across all geographic regions an

Bioaccumulation and Elimination, and Risk Assessment of Diazepam in Carp (Cyprinus Carpio).

This study investigated the bioaccumulation and elimination dynamics of diazepam in various tissues of carp (Cyprinus carpio) exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations, along with assessing the potential human exposure risks associated with carp consumption. The residues of diazepam in carp skin muscle exceeded regulatory thresholds when the water concentration surpassed 100 ng/L. The tissue-specific accumulation levels followed the order: liver > kidney > gill > plasma > skin muscle. Steady-state bioconcentration factors (BCFss) were found to be 7.18 L/kg and 8.26 L/kg at exposure co

Bioaccumulation and uptake kinetics of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in Pimephales promelas.

Due to the ubiquitous contamination of water resources by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), there has been growing interest in understanding the disposition of PFAS in the environment. However, bioaccumulation dynamics remain poorly understood for many substances within this group of chemicals, and kinetic-based information is limited, particularly for fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas), a common ecotoxicology model that is not commonly utilized during bioaccumulation studies. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine uptake of 19 PFAS by adult fathead minnows over 7 days at

Bioaccumulation and ecotoxicity of parabens in aquatic organisms: Current status and trends.

Parabens are preservatives widely used in personal care products, pharmaceuticals, and foodstuffs. However, they are still unregulated chemical compounds. Given their extensive use and presence in different environmental compartments, parabens can adversely affect animal health. Thus, the current study aimed to summarize and critically analyze the bioaccumulation and ecotoxicity of parabens in aquatic species. Studies have been mostly conducted in laboratory conditions (75%), using mainly fish and crustaceans. Field studies were carried out across 128 sampling sites in six countries. Paraben b
