Sustainable bioplastics manufacturing from renewable sources.

Fossil-based material manufacturing has long been linked to the acceleration of climate change through carbon dioxide emissions. In addition to their negative impact on the environment, the depletion of nonrenewable fossil fuels has led to a global demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives. This has sparked a surge of academic interest in the past few decades on the manufacture of bio-based materials as substitutes for fossil-based materials. As sustainability becomes a global imperative, bioplastics are rapidly emerging as a viable alternative to conventional petroleum-

A review on the application of starch in biodegradable mulch films.

Traditional plastic mulch films have caused serious environmental problems. The continuous accumulation of non-degradable plastic residues such as polyethylene has led to soil pollution in agriculture and has become one of the major sources of the global plastic pollution crisis. With the enhancement of environmental awareness and policy support, more and more countries and regions have begun to pay attention to the research and application of biodegradable materials. This is to achieve sustainable agricultural development. Among them, starch-based biodegradable films have received extensive a

Harnessing microbial power to degrade hydrocarbon-based plastics.

The growing global plastic waste crisis demands the development of urgent, effective, and sustainable solutions. While conventional recycling methods present intrinsic limitations, microbial biodegradation of plastic waste has emerged as a promising alternative. In this review, we explore the potential of using microorganisms to degrade major hydrocarbon-based plastic polymers and discuss key aspects of this rapidly advancing field, including (i) isolation and characterization of novel microorganisms and enzymes in hydrocarbon-based plastic biodegradation, (ii) development and streamlining of

Biodegradation Kinetics of 1,4-Dioxane in Chlorinated Solvent Mixtures.

This study investigated the impacts of individual chlorinated solvents and their mixtures on aerobic 1,4-dioxane biodegradation by Pseudonocardia dioxanivorans CB1190. The established association of these co-occurring compounds suggests important considerations for their respective biodegradation processes. Our kinetics and mechanistic studies demonstrated that individual solvents inhibited biodegradation of 1,4-dioxane in the following order: 1,1-dichloroethene (1,1-DCE) > cis-1,2-diochloroethene (cDCE) > trichloroethene (TCE) > 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA). The presence of 5 mg L(-1) 1,1-DCE

A Synergistic Platform for Continuous Co-removal of 1,1,1-Trichloroethane, Trichloroethene, and 1,4-Dioxane via Catalytic Dechlorination Followed by Biodegradation.

Groundwater co-contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA), and trichloroethene (TCE) is among the most urgent environmental concerns of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and industries related to chlorinated solvents. Inspired by the pressing need to remove all three contaminants at many sites, we tested a synergistic platform: catalytic reduction of 1,1,1-TCA and TCE to ethane in a H2-based membrane palladium-film reactor (H2-MPfR), followed by aerobic biodegradation of ethane and 1,4-dioxane in an O2-based membrane biofilm react

Effects of different culture media on biodegradation of triclosan by Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Penicillium sp.

Triclosan is an antimicrobial agent and a persistent pollutant. The biodegradation of triclosan is dependent on many variables including the biodegradation organism and the environmental conditions. Here, we evaluated the triclosan degradation potential of two fungi strains, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Penicillium sp., and the rate of its turnover to 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). Both of these strains showed less susceptibility to triclosan when grown in minimal salt medium. In order to further evaluate the effects of environmental conditions on triclosan degradation, three different culture

Application of a reverse transcription-PCR assay to monitor regulation of the catabolic nahAc gene during phenanthrene degradation.

Biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), such as phenanthrene, in environmental samples is often limited by low bioavailability which results from a combination of low aqueous solubility and/or high sorption. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of agents that increase PAH bioavailability on expression of the PAH catabolic gene nahAc. Phenanthrene was used as a model PAH and Pseudomonasputida PpG7, which contains the NAH7 plasmid that encodes the genes responsible for naphthalene and phenanthrene degradation, was used as a model degrader. Application of Yeasts as Pollutant Adsorbents.

Pollutants are chemicals introduced into the environment that produce deleterious impacts on human health and ecosystems, causing disease, global warming, and increased mortality. Bioremediation through microbial biomass is a low-cost and eco-friendly approach to the removal of pollutants. Yeasts, however, have been found to have high capacity to adsorb and detoxify several contaminants under nonsterile and low-cost conditions. This paper discusses the use of yeasts in bioremediation through the adsorption of pollutants such as heavy metals, mycotoxins, dyes, heterocyclic aromatic compounds, pe

Microalgae-based bioremediation of emerging contaminants: techniques, recent developments, and future perspectives.

Rapid industrialisation, urbanisation, and agricultural chemical fertilizer expansion have raised concerns over the accumulation and biomagnification of recalcitrant and emerging contaminants. Often, these compounds are resistant to degradation, and their conversion may lead to generation of even more toxic derivatives, which ultimately makes their remediation a crucial environment concern. Conventional treatment techniques are often considered expensive, inefficient and harmful to the environment; therefore the necessity to shift towards sustainable alternatives is required. Microalgae have e

Degradation of starch-based bioplastic bags in the pelagic and benthic zones of the Gulf of Oman.

The Gulf of Oman is becoming increasingly polluted with plastics, hence bioplastics have been considered 'a substitute', although their biodegradability in marine environments has not been well investigated. Most research has been performed on cellulose-based bioplastics, whereas starch-based bioplastics have proven to be a suitable, but less researched, alternative. This study is the first of its kind designed to investigate the degradability of two different types of starch-based bioplastic bags, available in the market and labeled as "biodegradable", in the pelagic and benthic zones of one

Terrestrial risk assessment for linear alkyl benzene sulfonate (LAS) in sludge-amended soils.

A comparison of the estimated environmental concentration and the effect concentrations (in the laboratory or field) in the receiving compartment form the basis of environmental risk assessments. This paper reviews processes that critically influence the fate of LAS in the terrestrial environment. Concentrations of LAS in sludge are quite high due to sorption to primary sludge, precipitation of Ca and Mg-salts of LAS, and lack of biodegradation under anaerobic digestion. This implies that when sludge is applied to soil e.g. as a fertilizer, considerable amounts of this important surfactant may

Effect of ultra-high-density polyethylene microplastic on the sorption and biodegradation of organic micropollutants.

Microplastics and organic micropollutants are two emerging contaminants that interact with each other in environmental and engineered systems. Sorption of organic micropollutants, such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides and industrial compounds, to microplastics can modify their bioavailability and biodegradation. The present study investigated the capacity of ultra-high density polyethylene particles (125 µm in diameter), before and after aging, to sorb 21 organic micropollutants at different environmentally relevant concentration. Furthermore, the biodegradation of these organic micropollutants

Microbial co-metabolism in the degradation of emerging organic pollutants.

The increasing detection of emerging organic pollutants (EOPs) in the environment raises concerns about ecological impacts and human health risks, requiring urgent research on degradation pathways and environmental fate. Microbial degradation of EOPs often proceeds concurrently with the metabolism of other pollutants and typically manifests as a co-metabolic process in environmental media. Studying the mechanism of co-metabolism can realistically simulate environmental conditions and elucidate the behavioral mechanisms and ecological impacts of EOPs. This study aims to elucidate the mechanisms

Catalytic roles, immobilization and management of recalcitrant environmental pollutants by laccases: Significance in sustainable green chemistry.

We are facing a high risk of exposure to emerging contaminants and increasing environmental pollution with the concomitant growth of industries. Persistence of these pollutants is a major concern to the ecosystem. Laccases, also known as "green catalysts" are multi-copper oxidases which offers an eco-friendly solution for the degradation of these hazardous pollutants to less or non-toxic compounds. Although various other biological methods exist for the treatment of pollutants, the fact that laccases catalyze the oxidation of broad range of substrates in the presence of molecular oxygen withou
