Evaluation and use of plant biodiversity for food and pharmaceuticals.

Many epidemiological studies have shown the importance of fruit and vegetables in the human diet so as to prevent the onset of cardiovascular disease and several forms of cancer. The use for food and pharmaceuticals of two of the most widely grown and genetically well-known species in the world, the tomato and the potato, is reviewed. Tomatoes are important sources of vitamin C, potassium, folic acid and carotenoids such as lycopene and beta-carotene. It has been demonstrated that lycopene has anti-oxidant properties and interferes with the growth of cancerous cells. At the Department of Agron

Focusing Biodiversity Research on the Needs of Decision Makers.

/ The project on Biodiversity Uncertainties and Research Needs (BURN) ensures the advancement of usable knowledge on biodiversity by obtaining input from decision makers on their priority information needs about biodiversity and then using this input to engage leading scientists in designing policy-relevant research. Decision makers articulated concerns related to four issues: significance of biodiversity; status and trends of biodiversity; management for biodiversity; and the linkage of social, cultural, economic, legal, and biological objectives. Leading natural and social scientists then id

Bioprospecting Italian biodiversity for identifying potential neuroprotective agents.

Neurodegenerative diseases represent a growing global health burden. With current treatments limited to symptom management, natural biodiversity offers a promising source of novel, multi-target compounds. Bioprospecting thus emerges as a sustainable strategy for discovering innovative neuroprotective therapies, underscoring the importance of preventing biodiversity for future drug discovery. An initial metabolomic screening of Italian plants was performed to support a bioprospective approach, in which 27 plant extracts were evaluated for their ability to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and tyrosi

Rubisco limits plant breeding: can biodiversity unlock it?

Photosynthesis has been underestimated as a breeding target. A workflow that identifies or engineers superior Rubisco variants and introduces them into crops is urgently needed. Photosynthesis is the foundation of life on Earth, yet it remains inefficient in crop plants. At the heart of this lies Rubisco, the most abundant enzyme on Earth and the primary bottleneck in carbon fixation. Despite its central role in determining photosynthetic capacity and crop yield, efforts to improve it have been constrained by three persistent blind spots: an overreliance on model species, inadequate screening

Integrating humans into biodiversity science through ethnobiodiversity informatics.

Biodiversity science is increasingly data-rich and computationally sophisticated, yet humans are still often treated as absent, implicit or overly simplified drivers of ecological and evolutionary change. This limits how well models represent the real-world processes that generate biodiversity and practical impact at a time when human activities are rapidly reshaping biodiversity worldwide. Here, we describe ethnobiodiversity informatics as a necessary expansion of biodiversity informatics - the mobilization, integration and analysis of digital biodiversity data - that represents the human sys

Biodiversity and Natural Product Potential of Indonesian Actinomycetes.

Actinomycetes are a diverse group of microorganisms that play essential roles in environmental processes and drug discovery, particularly through the production of bioactive secondary metabolites. In Indonesia, most actinomycetes have been isolated predominantly from soil; however, the country encompasses a wide range of underexplored ecosystems, including karst ecosystems, geothermal areas, mangroves, marine organisms, and plant-associated environments. This review analyzes the biodiversity of actinomycetes across different environments in this island nation by constructing a phylogenetic tre

Exon Shuffling and Origin of Scorpion Venom Biodiversity.

Scorpion venom is a complex combinatorial library of peptides and proteins with multiple biological functions. A combination of transcriptomic and proteomic techniques has revealed its enormous molecular diversity, as identified by the presence of a large number of ion channel-targeted neurotoxins with different folds, membrane-active antimicrobial peptides, proteases, and protease inhibitors. Although the biodiversity of scorpion venom has long been known, how it arises remains unsolved. In this work, we analyzed the exon-intron structures of an array of scorpion venom protein-encoding genes

Uncovering Listeria monocytogenes hypervirulence by harnessing its biodiversity.

Microbial pathogenesis studies are typically performed with reference strains, thereby overlooking within-species heterogeneity in microbial virulence. Here we integrated human epidemiological and clinical data with bacterial population genomics to harness the biodiversity of the model foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes and decipher the basis of its neural and placental tropisms. Taking advantage of the clonal structure of this bacterial species, we identify clones epidemiologically associated either with food or with human central nervous system (CNS) or maternal-neonatal (MN) listerio

[Biology, species biodiversity and distribution of Trichinella nematodes].

From the time of the discovery of Trichinella larvae in 1835 until the middle of the next century it was commonly assumed that all trichinellosis was caused by a single species Trichinella spiralis. This species is an intracellular parasite in both a larva and an adult stage. The L1 larvae live in a modified skeletal muscles. The adult worms occupy a membrane-bound portion of columnar epitelium, living as intramulticellular parasite. More than century later T. spiralis have been reported from more than 150 different naturally or experimentally infected hosts and demonstrated worldwide distribu

Exploitation of Biodiversity in Bioeconomy: Examples, Opportunities, and Challenges.

While bioprocesses using Escherichia coli, Corynebacterium glutamicum, various species of Bacillus, lactic acid bacteria, Clostridia, the yeasts Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pichia pastoris, fungi such as Aspergillus niger, and Chinese hamster ovary cells are well established, the high level of microbial diversity has not yet been exploited industrially. However, the use of alternative organisms has the potential to significantly expand the process window of bioprocesses. These extensions include the use of alternative substrates (e.g., CO2, syngas, or methane), unusual process conditions (e.g

The biodiversity Composition of Microbiome in Ovarian Carcinoma Patients.

Ovarian carcinoma is caused by multiple factors, but its etiology associated with microbes and infection is unknown. Using 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing methods, the diversity and composition of the microbiota from ovarian cancer tissues (25 samples) and normal distal fallopian tube tissues (25 samples) were analyzed. High-throughput sequencing showed that the diversity and richness indexes were significantly decreased in ovarian cancer tissues compared to tissues from normal distal fallopian tubes. The ratio of the two phyla for Proteobacteria/Firmicutes was notably increased in ovarian

Climate constrains the evolutionary history and biodiversity of crocodylians.

The fossil record of crocodylians and their relatives (pseudosuchians) reveals a rich evolutionary history, prompting questions about causes of long-term decline to their present-day low biodiversity. We analyse climatic drivers of subsampled pseudosuchian biodiversity over their 250 million year history, using a comprehensive new data set. Biodiversity and environmental changes correlate strongly, with long-term decline of terrestrial taxa driven by decreasing temperatures in northern temperate regions, and biodiversity decreases at lower latitudes matching patterns of increasing aridificatio

Impact of biodiversity and seasonality on Lyme-pathogen transmission.

Lyme disease imposes increasing global public health challenges. To better understand the joint effects of seasonal temperature variation and host community composition on the pathogen transmission, a stage-structured periodic model is proposed by integrating seasonal tick development and activity, multiple host species and complex pathogen transmission routes between ticks and reservoirs. Two thresholds, one for tick population dynamics and the other for Lyme-pathogen transmission dynamics, are identified and shown to fully classify the long-term outcomes of the tick invasion and disease pers

Biodiversity and leptospirosis risk: a case of pathogen regulation?

Well balanced ecosystems have an essential role in disease regulation, and consequently their correct functioning is increasingly recognised as imperative for maintaining human health. Disruptions to ecosystems have been found to increase the risk of several diseases, including Hantavirus, Lyme disease, Ross River virus, malaria and Ciguatera fish poisoning. Leptospirosis is a globally important emerging zoonosis, caused by spirochaete bacteria, borne by many mammalian hosts, and also transmitted environmentally. We propose that leptospirosis incidence in humans is also linked to ecosystem dis

Impacts of biodiversity on the emergence and transmission of infectious diseases.

Current unprecedented declines in biodiversity reduce the ability of ecological communities to provide many fundamental ecosystem services. Here we evaluate evidence that reduced biodiversity affects the transmission of infectious diseases of humans, other animals and plants. In principle, loss of biodiversity could either increase or decrease disease transmission. However, mounting evidence indicates that biodiversity loss frequently increases disease transmission. In contrast, areas of naturally high biodiversity may serve as a source pool for new pathogens. Overall, despite many remaining q

[Fishery resource biodiversity and sustainable utilization in mangrove wetlands.].

Mangrove wetlands are important ecotone linking terrestrial and marine ecosystems and provide essential habitats that maintain coastal fishery resource diversity and ecosystem functioning. With increasing global concerns on mangrove conservation and restoration, the protection and sustainable utilization of mangrove fishery resources have become important research topics. We summarized the composition and community structures of fishery biological resources in mangrove wetlands, elucidated the ecological roles of mangrove habitats in sustaining fishery resources, reviewed methodological advanc
