Microbial Fuel Cell Biosensor with Capillary Carbon Source Delivery for Real-Time Toxicity Detection.

A microbial fuel cell (MFC) biosensor with an anode as a sensing element is often unreliable at low or significantly fluctuating organic matter concentrations. To remove this limitation, this work demonstrates capillary action-aided carbon source delivery to an anode-sensing MFC biosensor for use in carbon-depleted environments, e.g., potable water. First, different carbon source delivery configurations using several thread types, silk, nylon, cotton, and polyester, are evaluated. Silk thread was determined to be the most suitable material for passive delivery of a 40 g L-1 acetate solution. T

Dynamics of a Bacterial Community in the Anode and Cathode of Microbial Fuel Cells under Sulfadiazine Pressure.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) could achieve the removal of antibiotics and generate power in the meantime, a process in which the bacterial community structure played a key role. Previous work has mainly focused on microbes in the anode, while their role in the cathode was seldomly mentioned. Thus, this study explored the bacterial community of both electrodes in MFCs under sulfadiazine (SDZ) pressure. The results showed that the addition of SDZ had a limited effect on the electrochemical performance, and the maximum output voltage was kept at 0.55 V. As the most abundant phylum, Proteobacteria

Floating treatment wetlands integrated with microbial fuel cell for the treatment of urban wastewaters and bioenergy generation.

The objective of the present study was to develop a combined system composed of anaerobic biofilter (AF) and floating treatment wetlands (FTW) coupled with microbial fuel cells (MFC) in the buoyant support for treating wastewater from a university campus and generate bioelectricity. The raw wastewater was pumped to a 1450 L tank, operated in batch flow and filled with plastic conduits. The second treatment stage was composed of a 1000 L FTW box with a 200 L plastic drum inside (acting as settler in the entrance) and vegetated with mixed ornamental plants species floating in a polyurethane supp

Effect of the tetracycline antibiotics on performance and microbial community of microbial fuel cell.

The adverse effect of tetracycline antibiotics on microbial activity is one of the serious risks for the biologic wastewater treatment process. The microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a promising technology for wastewater treatment and renewable power generation process. For this reason, the investigation of the inhibition effect of the tetracyclines on the MFCs is essential for reducing damage on the environment. This paper focused on the performance of MFCs under different antibiotic concentrations at the range of 0.25-50 mg/L. The power generation performance, microbial community and biofilm ch

Effect of external resistance on substrate removal and electricity generation in microbial fuel cell treating sulfide and nitrate simultaneously.

The effect of external resistance on substrate removal and electricity generation was explored in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) simultaneously treating sulfide and nitrate. The MFCs were operated under three different conditions keeping open-circuit MFC as control. In batch mode, all the MFCs showed good capacity of simultaneously removing sulfide and nitrate regardless of external resistance. The voltage profile could be divided into rapid descent zone, bulge zone, and stability zone, which represents typical polarization behavior. Taking open circuit as control, low external resistance promote

Using a tubular photosynthetic microbial fuel cell to treat anaerobically digested effluent from kitchen waste: Mechanisms of organics and ammonium removal.

Anaerobically digested effluent from kitchen waste (ADE-KW) was used herein as the substrate of a tubular photosynthetic microbial fuel cell (PMFC) for power production, and also, after being diluted, as a medium for cultivation of algae in the cathodic chamber. Adding 3 mg/L phosphorus to the catholyte could efficiently enhance the algal growth and the PMFC performance. About 0.94 g/L algal biomass and 0.57 kWh/m3-ADE-KW bioelectricity were obtained from the PMFC. Soluble microbial byproduct-like material and aromatic proteins were the dominant organics in the ADE-KW, which were readily degra

Effect of NaX zeolite-modified graphite felts on hexavalent chromium removal in biocathode microbial fuel cells.

Two kinds of NaX zeolite-modified graphite felts were used as biocathode electrodes in hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI))-reducing microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The one was fabricated through direct modification, and the other one processed by HNO3 pretreatment of graphite felt before modification. The results showed that two NaX zeolite-modified graphite felts are excellent bio-electrode materials for MFCs, and that a large NaX loading mass, obtained by HNO3 pretreatment (the HNO3-NaX electrode), leads to a superior performance. The HNO3-NaX electrode significantly improved the electricity generatio

Graphite fiber brush anodes for increased power production in air-cathode microbial fuel cells.

To efficiently generate electricity using bacteria in microbial fuel cells (MFCs), highly conductive noncorrosive materials are needed that have a high specific surface area (surface area per volume) and an open structure to avoid biofouling. Graphite brush anodes, consisting of graphite fibers wound around a conductive, but noncorrosive metal core, were examined for power production in cube (C-MFC) and bottle (B-MFC) air-cathode MFCs. Power production in C-MFCs containing brush electrodes at 9600 m2/m3 reactor volume reached a maximum power density of 2400 mW/m2 (normalized to the cathode pro

Development of a model to describe the performance of electromethanosynthesis in two microbial electrolysis cells with different biocathode sizes.

Electromethanosynthesis in a Microbial Electrolysis Cell facilitates CH4 production through enhanced reaction kinetics and efficient CO2/CH4 separation, while concurrently facilitating wastewater treatment. Two MECs which differed in the biocathode projected surface area (1.25 and 0.25 m2) were constructed and operated. The results demonstrated that increasing the electrode size led to increased CH4 production and improved MEC efficiency. A mathematical model was developed to describe the two MECs in the COMSOL Multiphysics framework, which simulates the growth of six microbial populations, us

Efficient degradation of aqueous dichloromethane by an enhanced microbial electrolysis cell: Degradation kinetics, microbial community and metabolic mechanisms.

Dichloromethane (DCM) has been listed as a toxic and harmful water pollutant, and its removal needs attention. Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are viewed as a promising alternative for pollutant removal, which can be strengthened from two aspects: microbial inoculation and acclimation. In this study, the MEC for DCM degradation was inoculated with the active sludge enhanced by Methylobacterium rhodesianum H13 (strain H13) and then acclimated in the form of a microbial fuel cell (MFC). Both the introduction of strain H13 and the initiation in MFC form significantly promoted DCM degradation.

Zinc removal and recovery from industrial wastewater with a microbial fuel cell: Experimental investigation and theoretical prediction.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) that simultaneously remove organic contaminants and recovering metals provide a potential route for industry to adopt clean technologies. In this work, two goals were set: to study the feasibility of zinc removal from industrial effluents using MFCs and to understand the removal process by using reaction rate models. The removal of Zn2+ in MFC was over 96% for synthetic and industrial samples with initial Zn2+ concentrations less than 2.0 mM after 22 h of operation. However, only 83 and 42% of the zinc recovered from synthetic and industrial samples, respectively, w

Bioelectrochemical process for simultaneous removal of copper, ammonium and organic matter using an algae-assisted triple-chamber microbial fuel cell.

Considering the adverse effect of heavy metals (such as Cu2+) on biological wastewater treatment processes, an algae-assisted triple-chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC) was established to remove Cu2+, COD and nitrogen sequentially, and also generate electricity. About 86.2% of the Cu2+ was removed in the first cathodic chamber, and the remaining Cu2+ was largely eliminated by algal uptake, contributing to an overall Cu2+ removal rate of 99.9% across the whole system. The nitrogen removal rate reached 79% in the system. The majority of the ammonium was assimilated by algae, and nitrogen oxides fo

[Mechanisms of Penicillin Wastewater Treatment by Coupled Electrocatalytic and Bioelectrochemical Systems].

Large amounts of wastewater containing residual antibiotics are produced in antibiotics production, but it is difficult for traditional biological wastewater treatment to efficiently treat this high concentration antibiotic wastewater. Coupled electrocatalytic and bioelectrochemical systems were proposed to treat typical β-lactam antibiotics (penicillin) wastewater. The penicillin wastewater was oxidized by a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrocatalytic electrode and then steadily treated by a bioelectrochemical system (BES). The penicillin removal rate of the electrocatalytic system was 89%, an

A Bendable Biofuel Cell-Based Fully Integrated Biomedical Nanodevice for Point-of-Care Diagnosis of Scurvy.

Fully integrated nanodevices that allow the complete functional implementation without an external accessory or equipment are deemed to be one of the most ideal and ultimate goals for modern nanodevice design and construction. In this work, we demonstrate the first example of a bendable biofuel cell (BFC)-based fully integrated biomedical nanodevice with simple, palm-sized, easy-to-carry, pump-free, cost-saving, and easy-to-use features for the point-of-care (POC) diagnosis of scurvy from a single drop of untreated human serum (down to 0.2 μL) by integrating a bendable and disposable vitamin C

Augmenting the biodegradation of recalcitrant ethinylestradiol using Rhodopseudomonas palustris in a hybrid photo-assisted microbial fuel cell with enhanced bio-hydrogen production.

This study presents the biodegradation potential of ethinylestradiol (EE2) in anaerobic environments using exoelectrogenic activity of Rhodopseudomonas palustris. EE2, a basic ingredient in oral contraceptives, is a significant estrogenic micropollutant in various wastewaters and is considered highly recalcitrant. This recalcitrance of EE2 has caused anoxic areas to become repositories for these pollutants. Thus, it is essential to find the microorganisms and suitable methods to degrade this compound. An initial EE2 concentration of 1 mg/L, used in an anaerobic photobioreactor, resulted in 70%

[Analysis and Characterization of Multi-modified Anodes via Nitric Acid and PPy/AQDS in Microbial Fuel Cells].

The properties of anode material are crucial for high performances in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Hereby, a biocompatible, conductive, and high electron transfer ability anode was fabricated by electrodepositing polypyrrole/anthraquinone-2, 6-disulphonic disodium salt (PPy/AQDS) onto nitric acid-soaked carbon felt. The results showed that the multi-modified anode outperformed the pristine one in biomass, electrical conductivity, and exchange current density with between 2.4 and 3.3 times better performance. The multi-modified anode (applied with 0.12 C·cm-2 total charge density) showed the hi

Thermal exploitation of wastes with lignite for energy production.

The thermal exploitation of wastewood with Greek lignite was investigated by performing tests in a laboratory-scale fluidized bed reactor, a 1-MW(th) semi-industrial circulating fluidized bed combustor, and an industrial boiler. Blends of natural wood, demolition wood, railroad sleepers, medium-density fiberboard residues, and power poles with lignite were used, and the co-combustion efficiency and the effect of wastewood addition on the emitted pollutants were investigated. Carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and oxides of nitrogen emissions were continuously monitored, and, during the industria
