Axial length biometry in infants with retinopathy of prematurity.

Ultrasound axial length measurements were obtained on infants under a birthweight of 1500 g or 32 weeks gestation undergoing screening for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). A total of 496 readings were obtained on 171 infants between 32 and 41 weeks post-conceptual age. Other details recorded were maximum stage of acute ROP, birthweight, gestational age, sex, and biparietal and occipitofrontal head diameters. The relationship of these variables to axial growth of the eye was examined using analysis of covariance with a repeated measures approach. Mean axial length increased from 15.27 mm to 16

Biometry of the anterior eye segment by Scheimpflug photography.

Scheimpflug photos of 262 cataract patients, classified according to various forms of opacifications characteristic for senile cataracts were evaluated by biometric methods. The measured values on cornea thickness, depth of anterior chamber, lens thickness, and radii of curvatures of cornea and anterior lens surface show that a correlation between some of the parameters and certain forms of opacities must be assumed.

Automated craniofacial biometry with 3D T2w fetal MRI.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluating craniofacial phenotype-genotype correlations prenatally is increasingly important; however, it is subjective and challenging with 3D ultrasound. We developed an automated label propagation pipeline using 3D motion- corrected, slice-to-volume reconstructed (SVR) fetal MRI for craniofacial measurements. METHODS: A literature review and expert consensus identified 31 craniofacial biometrics for fetal MRI. An MRI atlas with defined anatomical landmarks served as a template for subject registration, auto-labelling, and biometric calculation. We assessed 108 healthy controls

Longitudinal pelvic floor biometry: which factors affect it?

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate pelvic floor biometry of women 3-5 years after their first delivery. The effect of a subsequent delivery and the mode of delivery on pelvic floor biometry were also studied. METHODS: Three-hundred and twenty-eight women who had been examined by translabial ultrasound during their first singleton pregnancy and at 8 weeks and 1 year postpartum, were invited for a follow-up 3-5 years later. The positions of the bladder neck, cervix, anorectal junction and hiatal area (HA) were evaluated using translabial ultrasound. The effects of parity, mode of delivery and levator ani

Biometry of thenar muscle origins on the flexor retinaculum.

The transverse carpal ligament (TCL), the main part of the flexor retinaculum, serves as an anchor for the thenar muscles: abductor pollicis brevis (APB), superficial head of the flexor pollicis brevis (sFPB), and opponens pollicis (OPP). Biomechanically, the thenar muscles rely on their TCL anchoring to transmit muscle contractions distally for thumb force and motion production, and reciprocally, muscle contraction interacts with the TCL at the proximal end through the origins. However, scarce knowledge exists regarding the distribution pattern of the thenar muscle origins. The purpose of thi

How Abnormal Is the Noncorneal Biometry of Keratoconic Eyes?

PURPOSE: To determine whether the noncorneal biometry in keratoconic eyes deviates from that in healthy eyes. METHODS: The right eyes of 200 healthy subjects and 76 patients with keratoconus were measured with an autorefractometer, a Scheimpflug tomographer, and an optical biometer. The analysis consisted of a general linear model (GLM), correcting for age and gender effects, comparing keratoconic eyes with healthy eyes, and emmetropic eyes. Next, 20 patients with mild keratoconus in one eye and moderate keratoconus in the fellow eye were analyzed to assess the effect of disease stage. RESUL

Fetal biometry of skeletal dysplasias: a multicentric study.

Twenty-three diagnostic centers worldwide contributed 127 cases of 17 skeletal dysplasias. Discriminant analysis showed that the femur length was the best biometric parameter to distinguish among the five most common disorders in this series (thanatophoric dysplasia, osteogenesis imperfecta type II, achondrogenesis, achondroplasia and hypochondroplasia). Fifty-four percent of fetuses with femur length below 30% of the mean for gestational age had achondrogenesis. Seventy-eight percent of measurements between 40 and 60% of the mean for gestational age represented either thanatophoric dysplasia

Foetal biometry in polyhydramnios: Does femur length fall behind?

We aimed to identify the growth patterns in polyhydramnios, and therefore evaluated 108 singleton pregnancies complicated with polyhydramnios according to the changes in biparietal diameter (BPD), abdominal circumference (AC) and femur length (FL) percentiles. The pregnancy outcomes according to the growth features were analysed. In the study population, BPD and AC percentiles exhibited a significant increase (p = 0.023 and 0.05, respectively), although FL percentiles showed a significant decrease (p = 0.006) according to the changes in third trimester relative to second trimester.
