Small volume biopsy diagnostic yield at initial diagnosis versus recurrence/transformation of follicular lymphoma: A retrospective Cyto-Heme Interinstitutional Collaborative study.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have evaluated diagnostic yield of small volume biopsies (SVB) for the diagnosis and management of follicular lymphoma (FL). METHODS: The authors performed a multi-institutional retrospective analysis of SVBs including fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and needle core biopsy (NCB) for initial FL diagnosis and suspected recurrence or transformation of FL. A total of 676 workups beginning with SVB were assessed for the mean number of biopsies per workup, the proportion of workups requiring multiple biopsies, and the proportion with a complete diagnosis including grade, on ini

Hepatic angiomyolipoma with predominant epithelioid component: Diagnostic clues on aspiration and core needle biopsies.

Hepatic angiomyolipoma (HAML) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm that belongs to the perivascular epithelioid tumor family. Though it is characteristically, a triphasic tumor composed of smooth muscle, blood vessels, and adipocytes, the smooth muscle cells are often epithelioid and can represent the near-entirety of the tumor. A HAML composed predominantly of epithelioid smooth muscle cells occurring in the liver presents significant diagnostic challenges as many liver tumors are composed of large epithelioid cells. Furthermore, even if the tumor is not composed predominantly of epithelioid smooth

Value of CT-guided core-needle biopsy in diagnosis and classification of malignant lymphomas using automated biopsy gun.

AIM: To evaluate the value of CT-guided core-needle biopsy in diagnosis and classification of malignant lymphomas. METHODS: From January 1999 to October 2004, CT-guided core-needle biopsies were performed in 80 patients with suspected malignant lymphoma. Biopsies were performed with an 18-20 G biopsy-cut (CR Bard, Inc., Covington, GA, USA) needle driven by a spring-loaded Bard biopsy gun. RESULTS: A definite diagnosis and accurate histological subtype were obtained in 61 patients with a success rate of 76.25% (61/80). Surgical sampling was performed in 19 patients (23.75%) with non-diagnosti

Limited Tissue Samples: Hematopoietic Lesions - Three Case Examples of Judicious Use of Limited Material.

In the era of smaller and smaller biopsies submitted to pathology departments for diagnosis and the advent of personalized medicine, it has become imperative to efficiently and effectively use patient material to reach individualized, actionable diagnoses. The use of fine needle aspirates and core biopsies as acceptable methods for obtaining sufficient material for hematopoietic neoplasms under nonemergent conditions is debatable. There are, however, scenarios where only limited material is obtainable due to anatomic site, size of the lesion or condition of the patient. In these types of setti

European guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of breast lesions with uncertain malignant potential (B3 lesions) developed jointly by EUSOMA, EUSOBI, ESP (BWG) and ESSO.

INTRODUCTION: Breast lesions of uncertain malignant potential (B3) include atypical ductal and lobular hyperplasias, lobular carcinoma in situ, flat epithelial atypia, papillary lesions, radial scars and fibroepithelial lesions as well as other rare miscellaneous lesions. They are challenging to categorise histologically, requiring specialist training and multidisciplinary input. They may coexist with in situ or invasive breast cancer (BC) and increase the risk of subsequent BC development. Management should focus on adequate classification and management whilst avoiding overtreatment. The aim

[Core needle biopsies for lymphoma diagnosis seriously affect diagnostics, treatment development and research].

Core needle biopsies for lymphoma diagnosis seriously affect diagnostics, treatment development and research Core needle biopsies (CNBs) are widely used in clinical diagnostic labs to aid in the diagnosis of malignant lymphomas and in latter years their use is increasing. CNBs provide a rapid method for obtaining tumour material and may be beneficial when the affected lymph nodes are located deep in the abdominal cavity or mediastinum and surgical excisional biopsies may be difficult to perform. However, according to the Swedish Haematopathology Quality and Standardization Committee, CNBs are

Micronodular Thymoma with Lymphoid Stroma Diagnosed with Core Needle Biopsy. A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Micronodular thymoma with lymphoid stroma (MNT) is an unusual type of thymoma characterized by multiple, discrete, small epithelial nodules with cytological features of type A thymoma that are separated by abundant reactive lymphoid tissue. Diagnosis of MNT usually relies on surgical specimens and could be challenging with needle biopsies. We present a case diagnosed via a core needle biopsy since the patient was unfit for and refused surgery. CASE: The patient was a 79-year-old man with an incidentally found mediastinal mass. Subsequent computed tomography scans showed that the t

Comparison of core-needle biopsy and repeat fine-needle aspiration biopsy for thyroid nodules with initially inconclusive findings: a systematic review, diagnostic accuracy meta-analysis, and meta-regression.

INTRODUCTION: The rate of nondiagnostic and indeterminate cytology findings from fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is quite high, resulting in repeated puncture and unnecessary surgery. The primary objective of this investigation is to compare diagnostic accuracy of core-needle biopsy (CNB) with repeat FNAB for thyroid nodules with initially inconclusive (nondiagnostic and/or atypia of undetermined significance) FNAB results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A thorough search was performed on the Cochrane Library, Scopus, Europe PMC, and Medline databases until October 20th, 2024, employing a combin

FNA biopsy of breast specimens effectively harvests cells for patient-derived organoids modeling ductal carcinoma in situ.

BACKGROUND: Patient-derived organoids (PDOs) generated from benign breast tissue and breast carcinomas have successfully recapitulated their in vivo counterparts. PDOs model tumorigenesis and allow for screening novel therapeutics personalized to individual patients. However, acquiring cells to generate PDOs is cumbersome. This study demonstrates the feasibility of fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) for harvesting cells for PDOs modeling ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and compares the efficacy with core needle biopsy (CNB). METHODS: Surgical specimens from patients with biopsy-proven DCIS

Core Needle Biopsy of the Abdominal Fat Pad for Diagnosis of Amyloidosis.

Amyloidosis is a rare systemic disorder that is underdiagnosed and whose incidence is increasing as the population ages. The reference standard for diagnosis is endomyocardial biopsy, though its utility as a screening tool is limited. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) and surgical excisional biopsy (SEB) of the abdominal fat pad have emerged as alternatives to endomyocardial biopsy as screening tools for amyloidosis. Given concerns about the variable sensitivity of FNA and the more invasive nature of SEB, our referring providers asked our group to perform core needle biopsies (CNB) of the abdominal

Imaging and Management of Radial Scars and Complex Sclerosing Lesions.

Radial scars and complex sclerosing lesions, often collectively referred to as radial sclerosing lesions (RSLs), are breast lesions characterized by sclerotic stroma with entrapped epithelial elements. RSLs have imaging features that overlap with those of breast malignancy and often become the target of imaging-guided biopsy given their suspicious imaging appearance. These can be identified in isolation or can also be associated with atypia or other high-risk lesions that have intrinsic malignant potential, increasing the risk of carcinoma and affecting prognosis and management of RSLs.
