Foot and mouth disease (FMD) re-emerged and lumpy skin disease (LSD) emerged in Indonesia in early 2022, posing significant economic threats to the feedlot industry, which imports Australian-bred Bos indicus cattle. While the industry rapidly improved biosecurity measures, many were leading to unnecessary overspend with minimal effectiveness. This participatory project aimed to empower Indonesian feedlots and associated abattoirs to implement cost-effective biosecurity. The project engaged 22 feedlots and 11 abattoirs through workshops, site-specific risk assessments, and tailored recommendati

As modern naval operations increasingly occur in littoral and tropical marine environments, the threat of marine zoonoses-infectious diseases transmitted from marine organisms to humans-has emerged as a potent asymmetric challenge. Unlike conventional military threats, these pathogens bypass hardware defenses and instead target personnel, compromising mission readiness, creating operational delays, and threatening force health protection. This review explores the biological and operational dimensions of marine zoonoses, including bacterial, parasitic, viral, and toxin-related risks such as Vib

The aim of the study was to establish the complete microbiological profile of boar semen (Sus scrofa domesticus) and to choose the most effective antiseptic measures in order to control and optimize AI reproduction in pig farms. One hundred and one semen samples were collected and analyzed from several pig farms. The microbiological profile of ejaculates was determined by evaluating the degree of contamination of fresh semen and after dilution with specific extenders. The bacterial and fungal load of fresh boar semen recorded an average value of 82.41/0.149 × 103 CFU/mL, while after diluting t

In 2009, under the National Health Security Act 2007 (Cth), the Australian Government began introducing biosecurity regulations for laboratory research and other work involving certain pathogenic micro-organisms. The Security-Sensitive Biological Agents (SSBA) scheme is virtually unprecedented in Australia but is similar to the Biological Select Agents and Toxins (BSATs) scheme which has existed in the United States since the mid-1990s. This article examines recent United States experience in using domestic law as a national security tool to address the problem of biological weapons. The two l

The re-emergence of neglected vector-borne viruses has attracted attention globally in recent years. Getah virus (GETV), a mosquito-borne alphavirus first discovered in 1955 in Malaysia, caused sporadic mild clinical disease in horses in Asia. A highly pathogenic strain of GETV emerged in 2014 in Japan and spread to China causing multiple outbreaks in horses, pigs, and blue foxes with an expanding geographical distribution. Notably, there appears to be continued active transmission of GETV between China and Japan. While infections in horses are often mild and self-limiting, infected blue foxes

Birds may act as hosts for numerous pathogens, including members of the family Chlamydiaceae, beak and feather disease virus (BFDV), avipoxviruses, Columbid alphaherpesvirus 1 (CoAHV1) and Psittacid alphaherpesvirus 1 (PsAHV1), all of which are a significant biosecurity concern in Australia. While Chlamydiaceae and BFDV have previously been detected in Australian avian taxa, the prevalence and host range of avipoxviruses, CoAHV1 and PsAHV1 in Australian birds remain undetermined. To better understand the occurrence of these pathogens, we screened 486 wild birds (kingfisher, parrot, pigeon and

The dairy industry plays an important role in the economy and food security of India. A study of the dairy value chains was conducted in Punjab, India, to identify production constraints and biosecurity risks. Focus group discussions and key informant interviews were conducted during 2018-2019 with a total of 119 participants comprising veterinarians (41), paraveterinarians (15), veterinary academics (12), dairy farmers (46) and key informants (5). Input and output value chains were created, and potential risk nodes were identified that could facilitate the transmission of pathogens between an

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are rapidly expanding what can be predicted and produced in biotechnology, transforming the life sciences into a computational, distributed, and increasingly design-oriented enterprise. At the same time, biosecurity frameworks remain largely organized around the control of known agents, materials, and individual technologies, creating a growing mismatch between emerging capability and current approaches to risk. In AI-enabled biology, capability is increasingly compositional, arising from interactions among data, models, infrastructure, and workflows. R

BACKGROUND: Disease outbreaks present a significant challenge to horse health and welfare and the economic stability of horse industries internationally. This is a particular concern in Ontario, Canada, where there have been frequent outbreaks of respiratory infectious diseases among horses. Despite these risks, there has been limited research on whether Ontario horse owners engage in biosecurity measures sufficient to mitigate risk of equine diseases, and whether current events such as the COVID-19 pandemic influence attitudes towards equine biosecurity practices.
OBJECTIVE: To explore Ontar

This Swine flu pandemic of 2009 and the potential Avian flu threat of 2011-2012 have revived a most challenging debate on protection against infectious diseases. The response to the Swine flu pandemic has been ambivalent, both on the societal (political) and the scientific level. While some scientists warned against potential massive loss of human lives and urged for immediate and large-scale vaccination, others accused them of unnecessary scaremongering, arguing that the pandemic would not be that severe. The lab-created virulent Avian flu virus - which has been created in order to 'fight' a

Citizen reporting of biosecurity threats is an important yet inconsistently practiced element of environmental surveillance. This study examines the behavioural factors shaping reporting in Aotearoa New Zealand by conceptualising reporting as a multi-step process influenced by psychological, social, and structural conditions. Drawing on behavioural science, we apply the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behaviour model alongside audience segmentation to identify barriers and drivers of reporting using a national survey of 957 New Zealand adults. Latent profile analysis identified four distin

Viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) are severe infectious diseases caused by RNA viruses of the families Arenaviridae, Filoviridae, Flaviviridae, and Hantaviridae, characterized by high morbidity, significant case fatality rates, and frequent diagnostic uncertainty in early disease stages. For military medical services, timely clinical recognition and laboratory confirmation are essential to guide patient management, prevent nosocomial transmission, and maintain operational continuity, particularly in endemic or resource-limited deployment settings. This review critically examines current diagnost

BACKGROUND: Selective anthelmintic treatment, advocated due to evolving anthelmintic resistance, has been associated with an increase in Strongylus vulgaris prevalence. Reverting to routine interval anthelmintic treatments is not viable and therefore, identifying other management factors correlated with S. vulgaris infection is vital.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate possible risk factors associated with the presence of S. vulgaris infection in resident horses on Swedish horse establishments.
STUDY DESIGN: Internet-based questionnaire survey.

Awareness of crop biosecurity and phytosanitation has been heightened since 9/11 and the unresolved anthrax releases in October 2001. Crops are highly vulnerable to accidental or deliberate introductions of crop pathogens from outside U.S. borders. Strategic thinking about protection against deliberate or accidental release of a plant pathogen is an urgent priority. Rapid detection will be the key to success. This review summarizes recent progress in the development of rapid real-time PCR protocols and evaluates their effectiveness in a proposed nationwide network of diagnostic laboratories th

Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasite infections in grazing livestock cause significant disease, and are responsible for estimated annual losses of over €1.8 billion in Europe alone. The management of GINs in cattle is threatened by anthelmintic drug resistance (AR). Immediate action is needed to slow the progression of AR in cattle GINs and avoid the increasingly common scenario of multiple drug resistance seen in sheep. Although AR can arise independently on multiple farms, it may also be spread between holdings via purchased cattle. Therefore, effective biosecurity measures on cattle ent

OBJECTIVES: As an important public health concern, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is related to lack of knowledge among healthcare professionals. Since the Global Action Plan on AMR highlights the importance of training all healthcare professionals, it is essential to focus our attention on the education related to judicious antimicrobial use. The current study was the first attempt in southeastern Europe to quantify the knowledge about antimicrobial usage and biosecurity measure among veterinary students.
METHODS: This questionnaire-based study was performed between April and May of 2019 on
