BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe disease affecting 1% of the general population. BD comprises recurrent depressive, hypomanic, and manic episodes. BD occurs as type I (BDI) and type II (BDII). In this study, we investigated the duration of illness before lithium treatment started in BDI and BDII.
METHODS: A long-term follow-up study of 192 patients with BD (diagnosed following DSM-IV criteria) were collected from lithium dispensaries. Patients with BDI and BDII were divided according to lithium response.
RESULTS: We found that patients with BD responded better to lithium if the

Age-related changes of intracortical myelin in bipolar disorder (BD) have been observed to deviate from the quadratic age curve observed in healthy controls (HC), but it is unclear if this holds at varying cortical depths. From BD (n = 44; age range = 17.6-45.5 years) and HC (n = 60; age range = 17.1-45.8 years) participants, we collected 3T T1-weighted (T1w) images with strong intracortical contrast. Signal values were sampled from 3 equivolume cortical depths. Linear mixed models were used to compare age-related changes in the T1w signal between depths and between groups at each depth. In HC

Childhood critical periods of experience-dependent plasticity are essential for the development of environmentally appropriate behavior and cognition. Disruption of critical periods can alter development of normal function and confer risk for neurodevelopmental disorders. While genes and their expression relevant to neurodevelopment are associated with schizophrenia, the molecular relationship between schizophrenia and critical periods has not been assessed systematically. Here, we apply a transcriptome-based bioinformatics approach to assess whether genes associated with the human critical pe

BACKGROUND: Although current irritability and current/prior anxiety have been associated in unipolar depression, these relationships are less well understood in bipolar disorder (BD). We investigated relationships between current irritability and current/prior anxiety as well as other current emotions and BD illness characteristics.
METHODS: Outpatients referred to the Stanford Bipolar Disorders Clinic during 2000-2011 were assessed with the Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for BD (STEP-BD) Affective Disorders Evaluation. Prevalence and clinical correlates of current irritability and

Palmar and finger dermatoglyphics are formed between the 10th and the 17th weeks of gestation and their morphology can be influenced by genetic or environmental factors, interfering with normal intrauterine development. As both the skin and the brain develop from the same embryonal ectoderm, dermatoglyphic alterations may be informative for early abnormal neurodevelopmental processes in the brain. We investigated whether dermatoglyphic alterations are related to structural brain abnormalities in bipolar disorder and to what extent they are of a genetic and of an environmental origin. Dermatogl

Alterations in exploratory behavior are a fundamental feature of bipolar mania, typically characterized as motor hyperactivity and increased goal-directed behavior in response to environmental cues. In contrast, abnormal exploration associated with schizophrenia and depression can manifest as prominent withdrawal, limited motor activity, and inattention to the environment. While motor abnormalities are cited frequently as clinical manifestations of these disorders, relatively few empirical studies have quantified human exploratory behavior. This article reviews the literature characterizing mo

OBJECTIVE: For the onset of illness and possible recurrence during the childbearing period, women with bipolar disorder (BD) are at a higher risk. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of clinical and psychosocial factors associated with pregnancy and the postpartum period on the course of BD.
METHODS: The childbearing and illness history of 72 women with BD were assessed to determine mood episodes related to the childbearing period. Data was analyzed to evaluate the risk factors (clinical, obstetric and psychosocial factors) related with mood episodes during pregnancy and the post

BACKGROUND: Individuals with or at risk for bipolar disorder (BD) often present initially for the treatment of depressive symptoms. Unfortunately, pharmacological treatments for major depressive disorder (MDD) can be iatrogenic, precipitating mania that may not have otherwise occurred. Current diagnostic procedures rely solely on self-reported/observable symptoms, and thus alternative data sources, such as brain network properties, are needed to supplement current self-report/observation-based indices of risk for mania.
METHODS: Brain connectivity during affect maintenance/regulation was exam

BACKGROUND: Behavioral results have shown that bipolar disorder patients have impaired recognition of facial emotions, but the detailed information processing of facial emotions in patients with bipolar I (BD I) and II (BD II) disorders remain unknown.
METHODS: We tested the cerebral event-related potentials to the static facial expressions of Neutral, Happiness, Anger and Sadness in 39 adult patients with BD I, 22 BD II, and 54 healthy volunteers. Participants' affective states were measured with the Mood Disorder Questionnaire, the Hypomania Checklist-32, and the Plutchik-van Praag Depressi

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar Disorder (BD) is common in children, adolescents and adults. Early-onset BD has been associated with a more severe clinical course and greater long-term impairment. However, the specific associations between age of onset (AOO), lifetime comorbidities and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) remain unclear.
METHODS: We analyzed data from NESARC III, a representative U.S. sample, and conducted both cross-sectional and retrospective cohort analyses. This study included 1044 participants with a history of BD. Participants were categorized into 3 AOO groups: childhood (< 13

In an attempt to improve the classification of Bipolar II disorders, we have examined a consecutive series of 687 primary major depressives: 5.1% gave a past history of mania (Bipolar I), 13.7% met our operational criteria for hypomania (Bipolar II), and the remaining 81.2% were provisionally categorized as 'unipolar.' Although Bipolar II was in some respects intermediate between Bipolar I and Unipolar, gender, familial bipolar history, age at onset and course characteristics generally supported its closer kinship to bipolar illness. Seventy one of the unipolars (10.3% of the total series) fur

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between resting brain glucose metabolism and cognitive profiles in patients with remitted bipolar I disorder (BD-I) and bipolar II disorder (BD-II). We hypothesized that BD-I patients (compared to BD-II patients) would perform worse on tests of cognitive function because of abnormal metabolism in the prefrontal cortex and other mood-related brain areas.
METHODS: Thirty-four patients with remitted bipolar disorder (BD) (BD-I = 17, BD-II = 17) under treatment and 17 well-matched healthy controls received both fluorodeoxygluco

Tolerance development after successful long-term treatment of bipolar disorder is under recognized, as are ways to prevent or show its occurrence or reverse it once it has occurred. We review the clinical literature which suggests that tolerance can develop to most treatment approaches in bipolar illness and present an animal model of tolerance development to anticonvulsant effects of carbamazepine or lamotrigine on amgydala-kindled seizures. In this model tolerance does not have a pharmacokinetic basis, but is contingent upon the drug being present in the brain at the time of amygdala stimula

BACKGROUND: Loneliness has been linked to increased risk of mood disorders, but its relationship with bipolar disorder (BD) and underlying neurobiological mechanisms remain unclear.
METHODS: This prospective cohort study utilized data from the UK Biobank, involving 491,472 individuals aged 38-73 years without prior BD diagnosis at baseline (2006-2010). Participants reported loneliness and provided data on demographic, socioeconomic, lifestyle factors, and polygenic risk scores (PRS) for BD. Follow-up extended until 2022, tracking incident BD cases. Neuroimaging analyses examined gray matter v

BACKGROUND: Large-scale T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies have established gray matter abnormalities in bipolar disorder (BD), with our group contributing to consensus findings. However, structural connectivity, particularly within emotion- and reward-related circuits, remains poorly understood. Diffusion-weighted MRI (dMRI) enables investigation of white matter pathways, but prior work is constrained by small samples, methodological heterogeneity, and unclear medication effects. We conducted the largest dMRI network analysis in BD, relating symptom burden and polypharmacy t

BACKGROUND: Mood episodes in bipolar disorder (BD) follow a seasonal pattern in approximately 25% of patients. We aimed to examine the associations of specific seasonality patterns in BD with various clinical phenotypes and treatment-related outcomes.
METHODS: Patients from the Mayo Clinic Bipolar Disorder Biobank with available seasonality data were included in the study. Among those reporting any seasonality, participants were further categorized into four seasonality groups: fall/winter depression, spring/summer (hypo)mania, biphasic (fall/winter depression with spring/summer (hypo)mania),

OBJECTIVE: Bipolar disorder is a complex and severe mental illness characterised by manic and depressive episodes that can be triggered and exacerbated by psychosocial, environmental, and biological stressors. Genetic variations are a risk factor for bipolar disorder. However, the identification of the exact gene variants and genotypes remains complex. This study, therefore, aims to identify the potential association between genotypes of analysed single nucleotide polymorphisms and the presence of a stressor in bipolar disorder patients.
METHOD: We analysed 114 single nucleotide polymorphisms
