Cardiovascular disease, including congestive heart failure, pericardial disease, and atherosclerosis, is becoming increasingly better recognized in companion birds. A wide range of medications is available to treat these conditions, including diuretics, vasodilators, positive and negative inotropes, antiarrhythmic agents, and pentoxifylline. This review systematically discusses each of these drug classes and their potential applications in avian species. Although treatment approaches remain largely empirical and extrapolated from small animal and human medicine, the management strategies prese

The breeding of wild birds in captivity assumes an increasingly important role in conservation due to the loss of species and their habitats. Providing the environmental and nutritional needs of species kept in captivity is the key for achieving success in such initiatives. Among the flock health practices, we highlight here wild bird vaccination, a scarcely studied subject. This study clinically and serologically evaluates the effect of applying a vaccination protocol against Newcastle disease in three groups of ornamental wild birds. The responses observed in 10 ornamental chickens were comp

A 50-year-old woman who had been treated for Parkinson's disease was admitted to our hospital because of exertional dyspnea and weight loss. Her chest computed tomography showed diffuse ground glass opacities in both lung fields. Bronchofiberscopy was performed, and the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid showed an elevated lymphocyte count. The serum Ouchterlony test yielded positive results for parrot droppings as well as for pigeon serum and droppings. She had had a parrot for several years, but no pigeon, and so we diagnosed bird fanciers' disease associated with parrot droppings. This responded

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDS) span two current areas of sexual selection theory, namely the roles of multiple mating in determining individual reproductive success, and of parasites in mate choice, yet have been relatively neglected in the ecological literature. I reviewed the occurrence of STDS in populations of commercially kept birds and found widespread evidence for the existence of pathogenic STDS in such populations. STDs may have important consequences for the evolution of behaviour, reproductive physiology and some secondary sexual characteristics. Where STDS are costly they are

The case of pigeon breeders' disease reported here is peculiar not only because of the large number of birds with which the patient was in contact, but also because the disease developed in a patient presenting with both pulmonary tuberculosis and Crohn's disease. Moreover, 18 months after eviction of the birds and beginning of corticosteroid therapy, the number of lymphocytes in fluid from broncho-alveolar lavage remained high.

Over the past several decades, outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) in wild birds have attracted worldwide media attention, either because of their extreme virulence or because of alarming spillovers into agricultural animals or humans. The pathogens involved have been found to infect a variety of bird hosts ranging from relatively few species (e.g. Trichomonas gallinae) to hundreds of species (e.g. West Nile Virus). Here we review and contrast the immune responses that wild birds are able to mount against these novel pathogens. We discuss the extent to which these responses are as

Thanks to new technologies which enable rapid and unbiased screening for viral nucleic acids in clinical specimens, an impressive number of previously unknown viruses have recently been discovered. Two research groups independently identified a novel negative-strand RNA virus, now designated avian bornavirus (ABV), in parrots with proventricular dilatation disease (PDD), a severe lymphoplasmacytic ganglioneuritis of the gastrointestinal tract of psittacine birds that is frequently accompanied by encephalomyelitis. Since its discovery, ABV has been detected worldwide in many captive parrots and

Bird fancier's lung disease (BFLD) is a hypersensitivity pneumonia which develops in response to organic bird products. Two patients (25 y/M, 43 y/F) were admitted to our clinic with complaints of dyspnea, fewer and weight loss, both had history of pigeon exposure and we investigated them for BFLD. First patient had restrictive pulmonary function tests with DLCO of 49%, and the second patient had obstructive pulmonary function tests with DLCO of 33%. HRCT of both patients revealed nodular infiltrations. With these findings and history of pigeon exposure (the first patient at his job, the secon

UNLABELLED: Bird breeder's lung disease is the most common form of hypersensitivity pneumonitis and is a rare entity in young children. We report three cases of children under 7 years of age in whom this diagnosis was confirmed early in the course of the disease. Three children aged 4.4 to 6.5 years presented with dry cough lasting for more than 1 month, dyspnoea, variable loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, fever and mild signs of respiratory distress. Chest X-ray films and CT scans showed a bilateral micronodular infiltrate. All three patients had strongly suggestive bronchoalveolar lava

Many important lessons have been learned from studies of autoimmune diseases in chicken models. It is now quite clear that both cellular and humoral immune responses are important in developing the final picture of autoimmune disease. In the case of the amelanosis of Smyth line (SL) chickens, antibody appears to play the primary role, whereas the sclerosis of University of California/Davis line-200 (UCD-200) birds is mainly mediated by T cells. Chronic thyroiditis of the OS chicken is due to both humoral and cellular effector mechanisms. The Obese strain (OS) chicken is particularly valuable f

A 44-year old female farmer and pigeon-breeder presented with paroxysmal attacks of dyspnoea caused by recurrent subglottic laryngeal oedema. The symptoms disappeared under corticosteroid therapy but returned after discharge from hospital. The avian origin of the disease, suggested by a strongly positive search for avian precipitins, was confirmed when the attacks ceased after antigen exclusion. A realistic inhalation challenge test performed on two occasions with pigeon's feathers and droppings as antigens resulted, within 15 minutes, in a 4-hour long attack of paroxysmal laryngeal dyspnoea.

Two different surveys, one strictly epidemiological in rural areas, the other retrospective and within hospitals, led to a better knowledge of the setting of the FLD and BBD in South Pyrenees region. In the country, more than 12% of patients had specific precipitins, 6% had either one or both diseases; women had anti-aviary precipitins more frequently than men. The retrospective hospital survey yielded 456 cases of patients admitted or consulting revealing numerous correlations between the different clinical, radiological and functional syndromes on the one hand and the serological positivity

Bird fancier's disease falls within the spectrum of hypersensitivity pneumonitis secondary to immuno-allergic reaction to avian antigens. This occurs only rarely in children. It is found in two-thirds of patients with hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Diagnosis is not so easy. It is based on a body of clinical evidence. We here report the peculiar case of a 7-year-old girl with a family history of atopic disease initially treated as asthma based on the presence of wheezing and dyspnea and cough without improvement. The patient had worsening of symptoms such as dyspnea at rest complicated by cyanos

In this report we analyse the presenting features of a series of patients diagnosed with Waldenström macroglobulinaemia (WM) in Spain over the last 10 years. Criteria for diagnosis required a serum monoclonal IgM protein > or = 30 g/l and > 20% bone marrow lymphocytes. Two hundred and seventeen patients were included in the study, with a median age of 69 years and male/female ratio of 2:1. The most common symptoms at diagnosis were anaemia (38%), hyperviscosity (31%), B symptoms (23%), bleeding (23%) and neurological symptoms (22%). Sixty-one patients (27%) were asymptomatic at diagnosis and,

An epizootic of Pacheco's disease is reported from a zoo bird population. The infection was introduced by wild-captured Patagonian conures (Cyanoliseus patagonus) despite 61 days of quarantine. The disease affected several parrot species and, interestingly, three out of seven bearded barbets (Lybius dubius). The mortality rate was 30.93%. Autopsy revealed abdominal hyperaemia with liver haemorrhages and, in less rapid cases, yellowish discoloration and fragility of the liver. Death was caused by the collapse of circulation. Histopathology demonstrated liver cell necrosis, disintegration of the

Little attention was dedicated to diseases and causes of death of indigenous wild birds compared to poultry until recent decades. The interest of veterinary medicine in the spectrum of causes of morbidity and mortality of wild birds increased with the understanding of the importance of these birds as vectors in the epidemiology of zoonoses and as a biological indicator for the occurrence of substances noxious for the environment. The climate as a natural factor and the influences of civilization as traffic, high voltage lines and oil contamination of the sea lead to a reduction of bird species

During a study of migrating land birds in 1987, we examined over 9,200 individual birds representing 99 species from the Saint Croix River Valley, a Lyme disease-endemic area of east central Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin. We found that 250 deer tick (Ixodes dammini) larvae and nymphs infested 58 birds from 15 migrant species; 56 ticks (22.4%) were positive for the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. Five ground-foraging migrant bird species favoring mesic habitats, veery (Catharus fuscescens), ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapillus), northern waterthrush (S. novaboracensis), common ye
