Association of short interpregnancy interval with low birth weight and preterm birth in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Evidence from developing countries showed that short interpregnancy intervals are associated with low birth weight (LBW) and preterm birth (PB). However, in Ethiopia, the association between short birth intervals and LBW and PB remains inconclusive. Therefore, this review aimed to provide a comprehensive nationwide estimate of the association between short interpregnancy intervals and LBW and PB in Ethiopia. DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. DAT

Free T4 Age-Specific Reference Intervals from Birth to the 10th Decade of Life Using Direct Dialysis.

Background: Free thyroxine (FT4) reference intervals (RIs) provided by many laboratories do not adequately represent the differences in FT4 levels observed across age groups, limiting their usefulness in the diagnosis and management of disease, most particularly at the extremes of age. Interpretive criteria specific to neonates, young children, and older adults are rarely provided. This work was undertaken to develop comprehensive age-based RIs from birth to age 100 to provide clinicians with precise context for result interpretation. Methods: RIs were calculated through multi-modal decomposit

Reproductive history and later-life health: examining the link between birth intervals and CKD in postmenopausal women.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the associations between birth interval and prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in United States (U.S.) postmenopausal women with two deliveries. METHODS: The study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) covering 1999 to 2018, which is publicly available. Weighted multivariable logistic regression, subgroup analysis and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models were used to study association of reproductive factors (birth interval) with CKD risk in postmenopausal women with two deliveries. Additionally, the assoc

Maternal sociodemographic characteristics of short and long interpregnancy intervals in Japan: an analysis using national birth data.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have investigated the predictors of short and long interpregnancy intervals in Japan. Thus, this study investigated the maternal sociodemographic characteristics of short and long interpregnancy intervals among multiparous women using nationwide data in Japan. METHODS: The data of the Longitudinal Survey of Newborns in the 21st Century (2010 Cohort) in Japan were used, and the interpregnancy intervals of mothers were calculated. The age group, marital status, number of births, employment status, educational attainment of mothers, and household income were used as expla

Interpregnancy interval and adverse birth outcomes: a population-based cohort study of twins.

BACKGROUND: To investigate associations between interpregnancy intervals (IPIs) and adverse birth outcomes in twin pregnancies. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study of 9,867 twin pregnancies in Western Australia from 1980-2015. Relative Risks (RRs) were estimated for the interval prior to the pregnancy (IPI) as the exposure and after the pregnancy as a negative control exposure for preterm birth (< 37 weeks), early preterm birth (< 34 weeks), small for gestational age (SGA: < 10th percentile of birth weight by sex and gestational age) and low birth weight (LBW: birthweight < 2,500 g). Is the Relationship between Short Interpregnancy Interval and Preterm Birth Related to a Short Cervix?

Objective Our objective was to determine if the relationship between interpregnancy interval (IPI) and preterm delivery was related to cervical shortening. Methods This is a secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study designed to assess the relationship between cervical length (CL) and preterm delivery. Multiparous patients, who had transvaginal CLs obtained at 22 to 24 weeks and complete pregnancy outcome data available were included. The women were divided into two groups: Group 1 with an IPI of ≤ 1 year and Group 2 with an IPI of > 1 year. The primary outcome was short cervix (CL < 2.5

Sixty-one day twin to twin birth interval in a low technology setting.

Multiple pregnancy, whether spontaneous or from artificial reproductive techniques, is regarded as high risk. Limiting the twin-twin birth interval to within 30 minutes has been widely practised. However, conservative management of the retained live, immature second twin may be worthwhile. We report a case lasting sixty-one days in a low technology setting.

The influence of birth outcomes and pregnancy complications on interpregnancy interval: a quantile regression analysis.

PURPOSE: To ascertain whether adverse pregnancy outcomes at first pregnancy influence subsequent interpregnancy intervals (IPIs) and whether the size of this effect varies with IPI distribution METHODS: We included 251,892 mothers who gave birth to their first two singletons in Western Australia, from 1980 to 2015. Using quantile regression, we investigated whether gestational diabetes, hypertension, or preeclampsia in the first pregnancy influenced IPI to subsequent pregnancy and whether effects were consistent across the IPI distribution. We considered intervals at the 25th centile of the di

Rural-urban disparities in birth interval among women of reproductive age in Nigeria.

Nigeria like most developing nations still faced with a higher rate of short birth interval (SBI), and its associated consequences, such as adverse maternal and child health outcomes. This study aimed to determine the distribution and factors associated with SBI in rural and urban Nigeria. The data for this study were extracted from the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (2018 NDHS). Statistical analyses were descriptive analysis and binary logistic model. The proportions of SBI in rural and urban Nigeria were 20.7% and 20.3% respectively. Women's age, geopolitical region, education le

Interpregnancy Interval After Termination of Pregnancy and the Risks of Adverse Outcomes in Subsequent Birth.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether the length of the interpregnancy interval after termination of pregnancy influences the risk of preterm birth, low birth weight, and small-for-gestational-age neonates in a subsequent pregnancy. METHODS: In this register-based study, we included all women (N=19,894) who underwent termination of pregnancy between 2000 and 2009 and whose subsequent pregnancy ended in live singleton delivery. The women were divided into five groups depending on the interpregnancy interval between termination of pregnancy and subsequent conception: interpregnancy interval less than 6

Short interpregnancy interval and gastroschisis risk in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study.

BACKGROUND: The micronutrient depletion hypothesis proposes that consecutive pregnancies spaced too closely may leave insufficient time for maternal micronutrient replenishment. Short interpregnancy intervals (IPI) have been associated with an increased risk for several adverse pregnancy outcomes, but an association with gastroschisis risk has not been previously explored. METHODS: Within a population-based, case-control study, we evaluated the association between IPI length and gastroschisis risk using multivariable logistic regression models to estimate gastroschisis odds ratios for IPI <12

Association between maternal interpregnancy interval after live birth or pregnancy termination and birth weight: a quantile regression analysis.

We used quantile regression (QR) to assess if the length of the interpregnancy interval (IPI) after live birth and pregnancy termination is associated with weight in subsequent birth. The analysis included 9663 and 3400 women with IPI after live birth and pregnancy termination, respectively. For the women after live birth, an IPI < 12 months had negative effects at the 5th and 10th quantiles of the birth weight (BW) distribution. When the BW was beyond the 90th quantile, the BWs of newborns whose mothers with longer IPI (36-59 months) were higher than the reference group (18~23 months). For wo

Re-evaluation of link between interpregnancy interval and adverse birth outcomes: retrospective cohort study matching two intervals per mother.

OBJECTIVE: To re-evaluate the causal effect of interpregnancy interval on adverse birth outcomes, on the basis that previous studies relying on between mother comparisons may have inadequately adjusted for confounding by maternal risk factors. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study using conditional logistic regression (matching two intervals per mother so each mother acts as her own control) to model the incidence of adverse birth outcomes as a function of interpregnancy interval; additional unconditional logistic regression with adjustment for confounders enabled comparison with the unmatched d
