Effect of birth order on incidence of periventricular-intraventricular hemorrhage in very low birth weight twins.

The purpose of the study was to determine whether the incidence of periventricular-intraventricular hemorrhage (PV-IVH) is significantly different between the firstborn and secondborn of very low birth weight twins. The firstborn and secondborn of 102 sets of twins were compared by incidence of PV-IVH, mode of delivery, birth weight, 5-minute Apgar score, pH, duration of oxygen therapy, duration of ventilator support, and occurrence of patent ductus arteriosus, air leak, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, or hyaline membrane disease. PV-IVH was graded by the Papile classification. Statistical data we

Hematological parameters immediately after birth in twins and higher order multiples.

OBJECTIVE: To develop reference values for hematological parameters in twins and higher order multiple births immediately after birth and compare them with values from singletons. STUDY DESIGN: In this retrospective matched cohort study, hematological parameters immediately after birth from multiples, and gestation- and sex-matched singletons born between 2007 and 2009 were obtained. Infants born with maternal or fetal conditions known to affect hematological values were excluded. Data were compared using Student t-test, chi-square test, and nonparametric tests as appropriate. RESULTS: Three

Parental age and birth order effects in children with febrile convulsions.

This is a study of the parental age and birth order of 100 Chinese children with febrile convulsions compared with 100 controls. The birth order of children with febrile convulsions (1.6 +/- 0.8) was found to be lower than that of the controls (2.1 +/- 1.0), a difference significant at P less than 0.001, whereas there was no significant difference for both paternal and maternal age. Using multiple regression analysis, it was found that the birth order effect was significant at P less than 0.0001. This finding suggests that perinatal factors may play a role in the pathogenesis of febrile convul

Birth order and parental age in microphthalmos and other ocular diseases.

We compared the distribution of birth order and maternal and paternal ages of blind school children throughout Japan with that of the total Japanese population of the corresponding age groups and with that of a subgroup of children with acquired blindness. The number of first-born children with microphthalmos was smaller, and the number of second-, third-, or fourth-born children was larger, as compared with the control groups. The differences were highly statistically significant by chi-square test. There was a less pronounced indication of birth order effect in amblyopia, congenital cataract

Birth order and private voluntary immunization--a study of 110,902 children.

BACKGROUND: Introduction of new private, voluntary immunizations often results in low vaccine uptake among certain sub-groups within the population. Revealing factors associated with underimmunization is crucial in vaccine endorsement and distribution. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to investigate the effect of child's birth order on private voluntary varicella vaccination. METHODS: A nested case-control study was conducted on a cohort of 110,902 Israeli children under the age of 5 years. We compared social and demographic factors of immunized and unimmunized participants. Logistic regression model

Contraceptive equity: the Birth Control Center of the International Workers Order.

The Equity in Prescription Insurance and Contraceptive Coverage Act, introduced in Congress in 1997 and still unpassed, seeks to redress health insurers' failure to pay for birth control as they pay for other prescription drugs, most paradoxically Viagra. In 1936 the International Workers Order (IWO), a fraternal society, became the first insurer to include contraception in its benefits package. A forerunner in the movement for prepaid medical care, the IWO offered its members primary care and contraceptive services for annual flat fees. Founded at a time when the legal status of contraception

Reexamination of the relationship between birth order and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

In order to examine the hypothesis that being a firstborn or only child is specifically associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder, the birth order positions and sibship sizes of 62 patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder were compared with those of 60 agoraphobic and 92 depressed patients. No significant group differences were found for men, women, or both sexes combined. Results conflict with earlier findings which supported the hypothesized relationship between birth order status and development of obsessive-compulsive patterns in men. In addition to possible differences in methodolo

Correlation of age and birth order of parents with chromosomal anomalies in children.

One hundred children with suspected congenital and/or malformation and their parents who reported to SAT hospital, Medical College, Trivandrum, India formed the test group. Fifty children with no obvious anomalies or abnormalities and their parents formed the control group. The criteria for selection of the control was 1) the maternal age at delivery was below 30 years and 2) the parents belong to 1st or 2nd birth order. The chromosomal analysis was carried out in all the subjects using peripheral blood lymphocyte microculture to investigate for any constitutional chromosomal markers and quant

Physiological and metabolic responses in newborn piglets associated with the birth order.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of birth order on the physiological and metabolic responses of the newborn piglet the first hours after birth. A total of 281 randomly selected newborn piglets were included, classified according to birth order in 12 groups (L1-L12). The expulsion interval, neonatal vitality, latency in connecting to the maternal teat and physiological profile were recorded for each piglet. The number of piglets born alive and dead was also recorded. The blood gases, electrolytes and glucose levels of the neonates were obtained by means of an automatic blo

Structural and psychosocial correlates of birth order anomalies in schizophrenia and homicide.

Birth order--a unique index of both neurodevelopmental and/or psychosocial factors in the pathogenesis of psychiatric disorder--remains largely unexplored in violent schizophrenia. We examined whether murderers with schizophrenia would demonstrate birth order anomalies, distinguishing them from both nonviolent schizophrenia patients and murderers without schizophrenia. Self-report birth order, psychosocial history data (i.e., maternal birth age, family size, parental criminality, parental SES), and structural magnetic resonance imaging data were collected from normal controls, nonviolent schiz

The cause(s) of the fraternal birth order effect in male homosexuality.

It has been established that the probability that a man is homosexual is positively related to his number of older brothers, but not older sisters when the brothers are accounted for. This is known as the 'fraternal birth order' effect. In the past, efforts have been made to explain this phenomenon in terms of several alternative biological hypotheses and a psychosocial hypothesis. This note examines how well these hypotheses accommodate the fraternal birth order effect. It is concluded that: (1) the evidence for the hypothesis of maternal immunoreactivity to the male fetus is weak; (2) the ev

Morbidity and mortality of preterm twins and higher-order multiple births.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if preterm infants of higher-order multiple (HOM) gestations have a significantly worse outcome during hospital stay when compared with preterm twins. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort analysis. METHODS: Perinatal outcome variables including gestational age (GA), birthweight, prenatal steroid use, cesarean section delivery rate, Apgar scores, and growth retardation were analyzed for 106 preterm HOM births (triplets and quadruplets) versus 328 preterm twins admitted to a single tertiary level neonatal intensive care unit. A comparison of the mortality and major neonat

An investigation of family size and birth order as risk factors in leprosy.

To investigate if early exposure to Mycobacterium leprae is a factor determining development of Hansen's disease in general, or of a particular form of the disease, we have studied the sibship size and birth order distribution of 187 leprosy cases and 528 hospitalized control patients. By the Greenwood-Yule analysis, a small deficit of cases in the earlier birth order in the tuberculoid form was observed. Such a deficit was not observed in lepromatous leprosy patients. In the multivariate analysis, where socioeconomic factors, current age, and leprosy status of the parents were taken into acco

The impact of birth weight, birth order, birth asphyxia, and colostrum intake per se on growth and immunity of the suckling piglets.

Colostrum is the only source of passive immunity and the major source of nutrients and is crucial for thermoregulation of newborn piglets in their early life. However, the amount of colostrum obtained by each piglet [colostrum intake (CI)] differs considerably in large litters as born by contemporary hyperprolific sow lines. This experiment aimed to investigate the impact of the following individual characteristics of piglets; birth weight, birth order and neonatal asphyxia at birth on CI, and further to determine the relationship between the CI and the passive immunity transfer, and the growt

Birth order and infant health: Evidence from maternal immunisation in New Zealand.

Immunisation during pregnancy is a vital strategy to protect infants from infectious diseases in their first months of life, yet little is known about how birth order relates to maternal vaccination uptake and infants' risk of severe illness. Drawing on administrative data from New Zealand covering more than 200,000 births between 2015 and 2023, I analyse the relationship between birth order and maternal vaccination against pertussis and influenza. I also examine subsequent infant hospitalisations for these diseases. The findings show that later-born children experience higher hospitalisation

Italian neonatal birthweight charts derived from INeS not separated by birth order.

BACKGROUND: Identifying high-risk neonates with abnormal fetal growth is crucial for health risk prediction and early intervention. Small for gestational age (SGA) and large for gestational age (LGA) classifications highlight neonates having a higher risk for postnatal diseases. Accurate diagnosis depends on precise anthropometric measurements and appropriate reference data. In 2010, specific neonatal charts for Italian singletons (INeS charts) were published, tracing separately for first- and later-born neonates due to a 3% birth weight difference. We present INeS charts for birth weight non-
