Mycoplasma bovis is a growing threat to American bison (Bison bison) health and restoration efforts, causing significant mortality and disease in affected bison herds. Despite this, little is known about the epidemiology or clinical course of M. bovis infection in bison. In this study, we present continued observations from a cohort of naturally infected American bison, in which maintenance of subclinical M. bovis infections was previously reported. Most (8/11) surviving previously infected animals mounted a detectable immunoglobulin G (IgG) response that waned within 6-24 mo. Two bison mounte

Dictyocaulus is a globally distributed genus of lungworms of domestic and wild ungulates. Dictyocaulus adults inhabit the bronchi, frequently causing subclinical and clinical disease, and that impacts animal health and production. North American bison (Bison bison) and cattle (Bos taurus) share various parasitic nematode species, particularly in areas where co-grazing occurs. The current assumption is that North American bison share the lungworm D. viviparus with cattle, but this has not been confirmed on a molecular basis. The aim of this study was to molecularly characterize Dictyocaulus lun

The objective of this study was to determine the duration for which sperm from the North American bison (Bison bison) could be chilled prior to being cryopreserved, without compromising post- thaw sperm quality. This would permit transport of samples collected remotely, to the laboratory (at 4°C) for cryopreservation. Epididymal sperm from plains bison (n = 11) and ejaculated sperm from wood bison (n = 3) were collected, extended and held at 4°C for extended periods of time. At intervals, an aliquot was cryopreserved. Post-thaw sperm motion characteristics were evaluated by computer assisted s

OBJECTIVE: To determine the ability of Brucella abortus strain RB51 to induce placentitis and abortion in bison after SC vaccination.
ANIMALS: 10 pregnant bison cows, 3 to 10 years old and at 3 to 8 months' gestation.
PROCEDURE: Pregnant bison cows on a Montana ranch were vaccinated SC with 10(9) colony-forming units of B abortus strain RB51. Two cows, identified prior to the study, were euthanatized and examined 5 weeks after vaccination to obtain optimal histologic samples of placenta. Other cows were euthanatized and examined after abortion. After euthanasia, tissue specimens were collect

To determine if bison (Bison bison) bulls from Yellowstone National Park (YNP), Montana, USA, shed an infective dose of Brucella abortus in semen, 50 YNP bulls were captured on public lands in Montana during the winter and early spring (April-May) of 2010 and 2011. The bulls were immobilized, and blood and semen samples were collected for serology and Brucella culture. Thirty-five bulls (70%) were antibody-positive, and B. abortus was cultured from semen in three (9%) of the 35 antibody-positive or suspect bulls, though not at concentrations considered an infective dose. Eight bulls (six antib

The American bison (Bison bison) is an ecologically, economically, and culturally significant species that is exceptionally vulnerable to disease caused by Mycoplasma bovis. In contrast to livestock in which M. bovis is one of many infectious agents comprising the bovine respiratory disease complex, infection in bison is characterized by severe pneumonia and potential for systemic disease in the absence of coinfecting pathogens. In bison, morbidity and mortality are highest in adult cows, whereas calves and yearlings infrequently present with clinical disease. The infection dynamics of M. bovi

Handling North American bison can pose risk to the handler and evoke stress in the animal. Moreover, this induced stress might affect qualities of semen collected by electroejaculation. The objective of this study was to investigate if a long acting neuroleptic tranquilizer (LAN) would reduce the stress of bison and thereby improve the quality of electroejaculated semen. Eight experimental replicates were conducted between May and November. In each replicate, the same six bison bulls were randomly assigned into LAN-treated (n=3) and non-treated control (n=3) groups. Early Holocene bison mandibles (Bison antiquus) from Nebraska, ca. 8500 y ago, were examined with a variety of modern histotechnological procedures and staining techniques. A pathological, anatomical diagnosis of moderately severe, locally extensive, mandibular osteomyelitis with intralesional spherules morphologically consistent with fungal pathogens in the genus Coccidioides was made. The modern distribution of the organisms in North America is restricted to the arid Southwest. This implies either the fossil home range of the fungi was larger than it is today or fossil bison migrated between

We developed a highly contiguous chromosome-level reference genome for North American bison to provide a platform to evaluate the conservation, ecological, evolutionary, and population genomics of this species. Generated from a F1 hybrid between a North American bison dam and a domestic cattle bull, completeness and contiguity exceed that of other published bison genome assemblies. To demonstrate the utility for genome-wide variant frequency estimation, we compiled a genomic variant database consisting of 3 true albino bison and 44 wild-type pelage color bison. Through the examination of genom

We inventoried and assessed historical anthrax outbreak data from 1962-2008 in wild wood bison (Bison bison athabascae) in Wood Buffalo National Park and the Slave River Lowlands (SRL), Northwest Territories, Canada. We compared these results with a 2010 outbreak in the SRL. Anthrax outbreaks have occurred in 12 of the years between 1962 and 2008 in wild wood bison with 1,515 anthrax deaths detected. The average number of carcasses found each outbreak year was 126 (range 1-363), though local averages varied. The numbers of animals found dead per outbreak declined over the past four decades. Ou

BACKGROUND: European bison, Bison bonasus, is a strictly protected species of large mammal, with 25% of the world's population living in Poland. The most numerous populations of European bison live in the Białowieża Primeval Forest, northeastern Poland, and in the Bieszczady Mountains, southeastern Poland. The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence of Anaplasma spp. in B. bonasus from Poland.
METHODS: Tissue samples were collected from 45 European bisons between 2021 and 2024 in the Białowieża and Bieszczady areas. Two genetic markers, 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and msp4, were

The bison population in the Bialowieza Forest in Poland has now grown to approximately 300, while the herds in the Belarusian part of the forest total about 240 bison. The first signs of a health problem in these herds appeared in 1980, when two cases of balanoposthitis were detected in two bulls (2 and 5 years of age). Since 1980 research has been conducted to explain the cause of diseases, particularly balanoposthitis, and to monitor the health of bison in Bialowieza Forest. A total number of 614 bison (294 male and 320 female) of different ages was eliminated between 1980 and 2000. Not all

Anthrax, caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis, poses a threat to wood bison (Bison bison athabascae) conservation. We used descriptive epidemiology to characterize a large outbreak of anthrax in the Mackenzie bison population in the Northwest Territories, Canada, in 2012 and investigated historical serologic exposure of the bison to the bacterium in nonoutbreak years. Between late June and early August 2012, 451 bison carcasses were detected; mortality peaked from 13-19 July. A substantial number of calves, yearlings, and adult females died in the 2012 outbreak, unlike in t

The objective was to evaluate the suitability of an animal protein-free semen extender for cryopreservation of epididymal sperm from the two subspecies of North American bison: plains (Bison bison bison) and wood (Bison bison athabascae) bison. Both cauda epididymides (from six plains and five wood bison) were minced and incubated in Sp-TALPH buffer for approximately 2 h at 37 °C to release actively motile sperm. Sperm suspensions were filtered, centrifuged and the sperm pellet from each bull was divided into two fractions and diluted either in egg yolk containing extender, Triladyl, or in an

Bluetongue virus (BTV) and epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) are two viruses belonging to the genus Orbivirus that are transmitted via insect vector, the Culicoides biting midge, causing disease in domestic and wild ruminants. These infections can lead to significant morbidity, mortality, and production losses in livestock, with economic consequences for cattle and sheep industries. Despite their growing impact due to environmental and anthropogenic changes, little is known of the prevalence of these viruses in North American bison (Bison bison). We present the first cross-sectional s

An adult female North American bison (Bison bison) with a chronic otitis externa/media of the right ear was examined because of a 4-mo history of intermittent anorexia, apparent painful behavior, and auricular discharge from the right ear. Computerized tomography (CT) demonstrated osteolysis of the tympanic, petrous, and squamous aspects of the temporal bone with soft tissue replacement and sclerosis of the right bulla. A total ear canal ablation with bulla curettage was performed, and cefazolin-impregnated polymethacrylate beads were left within the right bulla and the remnant temporal bone.

Mycoplasma bovis is a primary cause of respiratory and reproductive diseases in North American bison (Bison bison), with significant morbidity and mortality. The epidemiology of M. bovis in bison is poorly understood, hindering efforts to develop effective control measures. Our study considered whether healthy bison might be carriers of M. bovis, potentially serving as unrecognized sources of exposure. We used culture and PCR to identify mycoplasmas in the nasal cavity or tonsil of 499 healthy bison from 13 herds and two abattoirs in the US and Canada. Mycobacterium bovis was detected in 15 bi

A central goal for reintroduced populations of threatened wood bison ( Bison bison athabascae) is to maintain them free of diseases of concern, particularly bovine tuberculosis (caused by Mycobacterium bovis) and brucellosis (caused by Brucella abortus). A wood bison population in southwestern Yukon, Canada was reintroduced into the wild in 1988, but no health assessment has been done since then. To provide an initial assessment of the health status and, hence, the conservation value of this population, we serologically tested 31 wood bison (approximately 3% of the population) for pathogens of
