Effects and mechanisms of bisphenols exposure on neurodegenerative diseases risk: A systemic review.

Environmental bisphenols (BPs) pose a global threat to human health because of their extensive use as additives in plastic products. BP residues are increasing in various environmental media (i.e., water, soil, and indoor dust) and biological and human samples (i.e., serum and brain). Both epidemiological and animal studies have determined an association between exposure to BPs and an increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), including cognitive abnormalities and behavioral disturbances. Hence, understandin

Screening of phthalate and non-phthalate plasticizers and bisphenols in Sicilian women's blood.

The plastic accumulation and its degradation into microplastics is an environmental issue not only for their ubiquity, but also for the release of intrinsic chemicals, such as phthalates (PAEs), non-phthalate plasticizers (NPPs), and bisphenols (BPs), which may reach body organs and tissues, and act as endocrine disruptors. Monitoring plastic additives in biological matrices, such as blood, may help in deriving relationships between human exposure and health outcomes. In this work, the profile of PAEs, NPPs and BPs was determined in Sicilian women's blood with different ages (20-60 years) and

Characterization of pregnant women exposure to halogenated parabens and bisphenols through water consumption.

Exposure of pregnant women to endocrine disruptor compounds, such as parabens and bisphenol A is of concern for fetal transition. Their halogenated degradation products, mainly coming from water treatment plans, could be problematic as well, depending on their occurrence in drinking water in the first place. Thus, 25 halogenated compounds were synthesised in order to investigate 60 substances (Bisphenols, parabens and their degradation products) in 325 drinking water samples coming from a French cohort study of pregnant women. Analysis was performed by tandem mass spectrometry coupled to gas c

DNA damaging and apoptotic potentials of Bisphenol A and Bisphenol S in human bronchial epithelial cells.

DNA damage caused by environmental agents often lead to many chronic diseases, including cancer. The present study aimed to understand the relative toxicity possessed by Bisphenol A (BPA) and Bisphenol S (BPS) on human bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B). The cells were exposed to either BPA or BPS and evaluated for its cytotoxicity, reactive oxygen species (ROS), DNA fragmentation, phosphorylated histone protein (γ-H2AX) and DNA tail damage levels. Further, we also studied DNA damage response (DDR) and caspase-3 mechanisms, to evaluate its mechanism of cell death processes. Exposure with 200

Bisphenol A and Bisphenol S Induce Distinct Transcriptional Profiles in Differentiating Human Primary Preadipocytes.

Bisphenol S (BPS) is increasingly used as a replacement plasticizer for bisphenol A (BPA) but its effects on human health have not been thoroughly examined. Recent evidence indicates that both BPA and BPS induce adipogenesis, although the mechanisms leading to this effect are unclear. In an effort to identify common and distinct mechanisms of action in inducing adipogenesis, transcriptional profiles of differentiating human preadipocytes exposed to BPA or BPS were compared. Human subcutaneous primary preadipocytes were differentiated in the presence of either 25 μM BPA or BPS for 2 and 4 days.

Effects of bisphenol A and bisphenol S on human fallopian tube contractions: An in vitro and in silico study.

Bisphenol A (BPA), a widely used industrial compound, and its structural analogue Bisphenol S (BPS) are known to exert reproductive toxicity. However, their direct impact on human fallopian tube contractility remains unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the effects of BPA and BPS on spontaneous smooth muscle contractions of the human fallopian tube. Fallopian tube samples from the proliferative phase were used for in vitro contractility assays. The effects of BPA and BPS (1-20 µM) on maximum contractile strength (MCS), basal tone (BT), and contraction frequency (CF) were recorded and an

Developmental neurotoxicity of bisphenol F and bisphenol S in animal model systems: A literature review.

Neurodevelopmental disorders have complex etiologies, stemming both from genetic and environmental risk factors, including gestational exposure to bisphenol A (BPA). BPA is an endocrine-disrupting chemical widely used in the synthesis of plastics and epoxy-resins. In 2012, the Food and Drug Administration issued a ban on the use of BPA in certain baby and childhood products, which contributed to the proliferation of BPA-free products. To make products without BPA, plastic and epoxy manufacturers often use chemical analogs, including bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS). However, the structu

The Caenorhabditis elegans cuticle plays an important role against toxicity to bisphenol A and bisphenol S.

Caenorhabditis elegans represents a favorite non-mammalian animal model, which is often used to study the effect of foreign substances on living organisms. Its epidermal barrier is a primary biological barrier that protects nematodes from the toxicity of chemicals. In this study, we investigated the effect of Bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disrupting chemical, and its structural analog Bisphenol S (BPS), which is often used as a substitute for BPA in some products, on the behavior of C. elegans wild type (N2) and C. elegans bli-1 mutant strain, which is characterized by the production of abno

Acute toxicity of bisphenol A in rats.

Bisphenol A (BPA), an estrogenic compound, is used in manufacturing plastics and is known to produce toxic effects on various systems in man and animals. Since the use of plastics in day-to-day life is increasing, exposure to BPA will also increase. Therefore, this study was undertaken to determine the median lethal dose (LD50) of BPA via intraperitoneal and intravenous route in adult rats (by Dixon's up and down method) and also to know the acute systemic changes (in blood pressure, respiration and ECG) produced by lethal dose of BPA. Adult female albino rats of Charles Foster strain were use

Bisphenol A (BPA) in U.S. food.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical used for lining metal cans and in polycarbonate plastics, such as baby bottles. In rodents, BPA is associated with early sexual maturation, altered behavior, and effects on prostate and mammary glands. In humans, BPA is associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and male sexual dysfunction in exposed workers. Food is a major exposure source. We know of no studies reporting BPA in U.S. fresh food, canned food, and food in plastic packaging in peer reviewed journals. We measured BPA levels in 105 fresh and canned foods, foods sold in plastic packaging, and

Comparative study on the neurotoxicity of five bisphenols using zebrafish embryos/larvae models.

Bisphenols (BPs) are known to exert neurotoxic effects, but comparative studies of their neurotoxicity using equivalent concentrations (instead of identical ones) remain limited. This study assessed the neurotoxicity of bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol F (BPF), fluorine-9-bisphenol (BHPF), and bisphenol AF (BPAF) in zebrafish embryos/larvae exposed to concentrations equivalent to 2 % of each BP's LC50. Results showed all five BPs significantly decreased 72 h post-fertilization (hpf) body length and increased 96 hpf mortality but had no notable impacts on hatching rate, heart rat

Associations of prenatal exposure to bisphenols with infant anthropometry: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Bisphenols (BPs) have been shown to exhibit developmental toxicities. Epidemiological evidence on prenatal BPs exposure and infant growth primarily confined scopes to specific BPs and birth outcomes, with few studies focusing on infant growth and reporting inconsistent findings. The joint effect of prenatal exposure to BPs mixture on infant growth was rarely studied. OBJECTIVE: This study examined associations of prenatal exposure to individual bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogues (bisphenol F [BPF], bisphenol S [BPS], bisphenol AF [BPAF], and tetrachlorobisphenol A [TCBPA]) and th

Associations of Bisphenols Exposure and Hyperuricemia Based on Human Investigation and Animal Experiments.

Hyperuricemia is characterized by elevated blood uric acid (UA) levels, which can lead to certain diseases. Epidemiological studies have explored the association between environmental contaminant exposure and hyperuricemia. However, few studies have investigated the role of chemical exposure in the development of hyperuricemia. Here, we sought to investigate the effects of bisphenol exposure on the occurrence of hyperuricemia. Fifteen bisphenol chemicals (BPs) were detected in human serum and urine samples collected from an area with a high incidence of hyperuricemia in China. Serum UA levels

Sponge-nested polymer monoliths: Versatile materials for the solid-phase extraction of bisphenols.

Polymer monoliths are promising materials for sample preparation due to their high porosity, pH stability, and simple preparation. The use of melamine formaldehyde foams has been reported as an effective support to prepare highly robust silica and polymer monoliths. Herein, divinylbenzene monoliths based on a 50:50 (%, w/w) crosslinker/porogen ratio have been nested within a melamine-formaldehyde sponge, resulting in monoliths with a surface area higher than 400 m2 /g. The extraction performance of these monoliths was evaluated for the extraction of endocrine-disrupting bisphenols from aqueous

Bisphenols induce cardiotoxicity in zebrafish embryos: Role of the thyroid hormone receptor pathway.

Bisphenols are frequently found in the environment and have been of emerging concern because of their adverse effects on aquatic animals and humans. In this study, we demonstrated that bisphenol A, S, and F (BPA, BPS, BPF) at environmental concentrations induced cardiotoxicity in zebrafish embryos. BPA decreased heart rate at 96 hpf (hours post fertilization) and increased the distance between the sinus venosus (SV) and bulbus arteriosus (BA), in zebrafish. BPF promoted heart pumping and stroke volume, shortened the SV-BAdistance, and increased body weight. Furthermore, we found that BPA incre

A new competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for determination of estrogenic bisphenols.

Bisphenol A and other hydroxylated diphenylalkanes (generally known as bisphenols) have been identified as potential estrogenic substances. In this paper, a specific polyclonal antibody was produced against these compounds by immunization of rabbits with a conjugate of 4,4-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) valeric acid and bovine serum albumin (BHPVA-BSA). The polyclonal antibody showed specific recognition of the bisphenol structure, while the cross reactions of other common phenolic compounds such as phenol, hydroquinol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid were all lower than 1%. The linear range of bisphenol A ca

Bisphenol A in Edible Part of Seafood.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a man-made compound, mainly used as a monomer to produce polycarbonate (PC), epoxy resins, non-polymer additives to other plastics, which have many food related applications, such as food storage containers, tableware and internal coating of cans, as well as non-food applications such as electronic equipment, construction materials and medical devices. BPA exposure can occur when the residual monomer migrates into packaged food and beverages. Moreover, due to the ubiquitous presence of this compound, the general population can be exposed to environmental sources such as wa

Bisphenol A: an endocrine and metabolic disruptor.

Bisphenol A (BPA), initially designed, like diethylstilbestrol, as a synthetic estrogen, has been rapidly and widely used for its cross-linking properties in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Because of incomplete polymerization and degradation of the polymers by exposure to higher than usual temperatures, BPA leaches out from food and beverage containers, as well as from dental sealants. In humans, free active unconjugated BPA is metabolized by rapid glucurono- or sulfo-conjugation and eliminated via renal clearance. However, exposure to environmental nanomolar conce
