Blastocystis sp., a unicellular intestinal parasite in humans and animals worldwide, is frequently found in immunocompromized patients and people in close contact with animals. Here, we reviewed recent studies on the prevalence, subtypes, and distribution of Blastocystis infection in humans and animals in China. To date, more than 12 provinces have reported Blastocystis infection in humans, with identification of six different subtypes (ST1, ST2, ST3, ST4, ST5, and ST6). The overall infection rate reported was 3.37% (3625/107,695), with the lowest prevalence (0.80%) in Fujian province and the

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional bowel disorder in which abdominal pain is associated with a defect or a change in bowel habits. Subtle inflammation, especially after infectious enteritis, has been sometimes suspected as one mechanism of pathogenesis. This research was performed (1) to evaluate the prevalence of parasitic infections and (2) the possible association of IBS and parasitic infections. Fifty-nine IBS patients were recruited using symptom-based criteria (Rome Criteria II) with an absence of intestinal parasitic infection by direct smear method. Stool samples of individ

Blastocystis hominis is now gaining acceptance as an agent of human intestinal disease. A case-control study of the cause of gastroenteritis in children less than 6 years old was conducted. A total of 500 stool specimens were examined by wet mount preparation, formalin-ether concentration, Sheather's sugar flotation technique, and permanent stains when necessary. B. hominis was found in 63 (25%) of 250 stool specimens of the cases examined; 38 (15%) of these specimens contained this parasite alone. The appearance of severe symptoms was associated with increased numbers of the parasite in the d

Blastocystis hominis BH infection has been linked to a variety of intestinal immunopathologies. Probiotic therapy is suggested to improve gastrointestinal inflammation during blastocystosis by inducing a pro-inflammatory cytokine response and modulating immune signaling pathways. A hundred patients infected with BH were divided into 4 groups. Group 1: 20 patients did not receive any treatment; Group 2: 40 patients received probiotic therapy; Group 3: 20 patients received metronidazole; and Group 4: 20 patients received both metronidazole and probiotics. Metronidazole was administered at a dose

Blastocystis is a common intestinal protist in humans and animals. Currently, Blastocystis infection in bar-headed geese is unknown. To understand the prevalence and distribution of Blastocystis subtypes in bar-headed geese, fecal samples were collected from 358 bar-headed geese in three regions. The total infection rate of Blastocystis in bar-headed in China was 5.9% (21/358), with 5.0% (6/120) in Aba (Ngawa) Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefect, Sichuan province, 11.8% (14/119) in Maqu county, Gansu province, and 0.8% (1/119) in Caohai, Wei ning county, Guizhou province. In order to describe the molecular epidemiology of Blastocystis infection in Italy, 189 isolates, which had been collected during the years 2012-2014 from mildly symptomatic patients, or those affected by inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or chronic diarrhoea, or otherwise immunosuppressed, were subtyped by sequence analysis of the SSU rRNA gene (536 bp). Six subtypes (STs) were detected: ST1 (15·3%), ST2 (13·8%), ST3 (46·0%), ST4 (21·7%), ST6 (3·2%) and ST8 (0·5%). They clustered in distinct clades, as inferred from Bayesian inference phylogenetic and median joi

BACKGROUND: Blastocystis sp. is one of the most common intestinal protozoa in humans. Unlike other intestinal parasitic infections such as giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis, the epidemiology of blastocystosis in children who live in crowded settings such as day-care centers and orphanages has been rarely explored.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted to evaluate incidence and risk factors of Blastocystis infection in an orphanage every two consecutive months during April 2003 to April 2004, in Bangkok, Thailand. Blastocystis sp. was identified using direct simple smear, and in v

OBJECTIVE: Numerous studies have revealed the presence of oxidative stress in parasitic infections. However, such studies were lacking in the Malaysian population. Previously, we have provided evidence that oxidative stress is elevated in Malaysians infected with intestinal parasites. Stool examinations revealed that about 47.5% of them were infected with the polymorphic protozoa, Blastocystis hominis. However, they were found to have mixed infection with other intestinal parasites.
METHODOLOGY: Therefore, in order to investigate the role of B. hominis alone in affecting oxidative stress stat

Blastocystis hominis, previously considered a harmless yeast, is now classified as a protozoan inhabiting the human intestinal tract. The pathogenicity of B. hominis remains controversial and is currently the subject of extensive debate.1- 5 As a result of the uncertainty surrounding the pathogenic role of B. hominis, large-scale treatment trials of B. hominis infection have so far been lacking. In spite of this, several drugs have been reported to be active against the parasite.6-8 The present study was carried out in order to evaluate the efficacy of metronidazole treatment in inducing clini

Blastocystis hominis (B. hominis) is a protozoan parasite that inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract of humans and animals. Often considered a commensal parasite, severe manifestations are uncommon and isolated. This case report describes a case of B. hominis infection in an HIV-seropositive individual manifesting as dysentery. The diagnosis was confirmed through both microscopic and quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR), which proved to be highly sensitive and specific for detecting this parasite. The patient was treated with cotrimoxazole and metronidazole in addition to antiretrovir

Blastocystis is one of the most common protozoa in the human gut and a zoonotic organism related to unsanitary living conditions. This protozoon shows a broad distribution, unclear symptomatology, and undefined pathogenicity. In Peru, studies report the presence of Blastocystis in many regions, but the highest prevalence levels are reported in Arequipa. The aim of this study was to link Blastocystis infection with social determinants of health. We recruited and surveyed 232 infected and uninfected participants from houses with at least one Blastocystis-infected person. All samples were concent

OBJECTIVES: Blastocystis hominis (B. hominis) is one of the most common intestinal parasites isolated in humans. The parasite can cause gastrointestinal symptoms or, in most cases, remain asymptomatic. There are issues concerning the parasite's pathogenic character. The aim of this study was to analyse the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the parasite infection by B. hominis, with or without other parasitic co-infections.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: An observational retrospective study was conducted of B. hominis isolates in faeces from October 2004 to March 2016 in a tropical medici

At the Regional Hospital of Temuco, 670 adult and children patients, with intestinal complaints, were studied to determine the prevalence of infection by enteroparasites or commensals in a general way, and by Blastocystis hominis in a particular attempt. A coproparasitological study was carried out using a modified Telemann method. Infection by parasites and/or commensals was demonstrated in 446 (66.6%) patients. The most frequent agent was B. hominis (35.8%) followed by Giardia intestinalis (22.5%) among the protozoa. The frequencies of helminths and commensals were 7.7 and 42.5% respectively

Intestinal opportunistic infections are often caused by unicellular parasites. Individuals with decreased immunity are particularly susceptible to infection by said microorganisms, and when they are infected, diarrhea can be the main clinical manifestation. However, intestinal parasites have rarely been taken into account in intestinal disorders. In our study, an investigation was conducted to determine the prevalence of intestinal micro-pathogens, such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Blastocystis, and microsporidia, in hospitalized patients with different immunological statuses. The study at han
