A 69-year-old man was admitted to the emergency department 3 hours after ingestion of a bleaching agent containing hypochlorous acid and sodium hydroxide in a suicide attempt. Enhanced chest computed tomography scans taken on admission indicated an edematous esophagus and air bubbles in the mediastinum. He underwent endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation until day 9 because of laryngeal edema. On day 10, his endoscopy indicated diffuse reddish mucosal hyperemia, erosions, and lacerated mucosal lesions in the esophagus that were indicative of grade 2b corrosive esophagitis. Treatmen

We aimed at investigating the cosmetic interests, public confidence in cosmetic industry, health knowledge, practice, and need for health education regarding using topical bleaching agents (TPAs) among a relatively big sample size in Al-Madinah (west Saudi Arabia, a conservative eastern society that acquires its social customs from Islam). Islamic values increased women respect and esteem in this society. This is reflected on cosmetic practices and attitude, e.g. women use face cover outdoors. This issue is vital for both women health and beauty, and is rarely discussed. TPAs use is affected b

Intracoronal bleaching is a minimally invasive procedure that was introduced into dentistry in the 19th century. The role of that procedure in enhancing the colour of teeth subjected to internal discolouration while being conservative made it extremely popular amongst dental professionals. Different materials and techniques have been utilized over the years attempting to obtain predictable long-term results while minimizing any associated risks. Contemporarily, bleaching agents are mainly based on peroxide-releasing compounds in different formulations and delivery systems. Different theories h

BACKGROUND: Current techniques for intra-coronal bleaching of stained root-filled teeth employ oxidative bleaching with hydrogen peroxide. However, concern over the potential for invasive cervical resorption following the use of hydrogen peroxide has been expressed by many researchers, and recommendations have been made to limit the use of this agent. A reductive-oxidative bleaching process using a thiourea and hydrogen peroxide regimen is proposed as an effective and safer bleaching combination. The efficacy of this novel bleaching regimen is evaluated in this study.
METHODS: The study invol

Today, the bleaching of nonvital, discolored teeth is a low-risk routine treatment for improving esthetics. This review article focuses on the etiology of tooth discolorations, different treatment techniques, and risks of bleaching procedures. Some tooth discolorations in endodontically treated teeth are caused by dental treatments. The three most popular techniques for nonvital tooth bleaching are the walking bleach technique, inside/outside bleaching, and in-office bleaching. The walking bleach technique is a relatively reliable, fairly simple technique for dentists and patients. Inside/outs

Tooth discoloration varies in etiology, appearance, localization, severity, and adhesion to tooth structure. It can be defined as being extrinsic or intrinsic on the basis of localization and etiology. In this review of the literature, various causes of tooth discoloration, different bleaching materials, and their applications to endodontically treated teeth have been described. In the walking bleach technique the root filling should be completed first, and a cervical seal must be established. The bleaching agent should be changed every 3-7 days. The thermocatalytic technique involves placemen

OBJECTIVES: To critically evaluate current and emerging intracoronal bleaching agents and to provide an evidence-informed framework for clinical decision-making in the postsodium perborate era.
OVERVIEW: The declining availability of sodium perborate, particularly within the European Union, has substantially altered contemporary intracoronal bleaching practice. A narrative review was conducted using a structured PubMed/MEDLINE literature search and manual reference screening. Evidence regarding bleaching efficacy, biological safety, peroxide diffusion, cervical root resorption, dentin-related

Internal bleaching is a conservative, non-invasive, and simple treatment that is frequently performed in daily clinical practice. The present in vitro study analyzes the oxygen expansion of different bleaching agents resulting from the oxidation reaction when interacting with enamel and dentin. Enamel and dentin were crushed separately until obtaining a fine powder with particles of an approximate size between 0.06 and 0.2 mm. Each enamel and dentin sample were mixed with 37% carbamide peroxide (CP 37%), 30% hydrogen peroxide (HP 30%), sodium perborate (SP) combined with HP 30% (HP 30% + SP) a

Bleaching techniques of both vital and nonvital teeth are reviewed. Current techniques and their origins are investigated, and the appropriate uses for various methods examined. The current research shows that bleaching, while highly effective, must be viewed with caution. The bleaching process cannot be viewed as entirely benign. The influx of bleaching agents prescribed for home-administration use by dentists is particularly deficient in the amount of independent, refereed research on their long-term effects on oral tissues.

OBJECTIVES: To minimize the tooth sensitivity caused by in-office bleaching, many dentists use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and topical desensitizing gels containing potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of these substances on inflammation and the expression of substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide in pulp nerve fibers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-two rats were divided into 6 groups as follows: GI, control; GII, only dental bleaching; GIII, only ibuprofen; GIV, ibuprofen administered 30 minutes before and after the bleaching tr

Intracoronal bleaching has emerged as a popular technique to bleach discoloured, endodontically treated anterior teeth. Although hydrogen peroxide and sodium perborate have traditionally been used in intracoronal bleaching, some concern has been expressed regarding the use of hydrogen peroxide, mainly because of the suspected "cause and effect" relationship between hydrogen peroxide and invasive cervical root resorption. Other complications associated with use of hydrogen peroxide alone or in combination with sodium perborate include increased dentine permeability, alteration in the chemical s

There are several questions with regard to the application and possible side effects of external bleaching therapies. The following short review gives answers to some questions regarding this topic. It might be concluded that every bleaching therapy should be preceded by a meticulous intraoral examination. To reduce the risk of adverse effects, it is mandatory to have knowledge about the mode of action of bleaching agents.

Bleaching is a viable treatment alternative to attempt esthetic improvement of discolored teeth. Natural tooth structure as opposed to a veneer or crown margin is considerably superior in tissue response. Caution has to be exercised in selecting cases and advising patients of the possibilities from bleaching and that bleaching may not be entirely successful or lasting. It still should be considered as a treatment of first choice. If applied properly and in carefully selected cases the results can be very rewarding for the dentist and especially the patient.
