OBJECTIVES: The main limitation factor for the wide use of umbilical cord blood (UCB) as a source of hematopoietic progenitor for transplantation is cell dose. One of the specific areas identified by some studies for improvement of UCB collection is donor selection.
METHODS: Over a 3-mth period, 391 consecutive maternal-neonatal pairs were evaluated during the pre-partum period in the maternity ward at La Fe University Hospital (Valencia) by the Cord Blood Bank staff. Reasons for discarding umbilical cord blood donors and collected UCB units at the Cord Blood Bank in Valencia have been analys

The number of umbilical cord cell transplants is increasing worldwide. The results are comparable to allogeneic bone marrow transplantation in a large variety of hematological diseases that are curable by bone marrow transplantation and, so far, the incidence of graft-versus-host disease has been limited. The advantages of using cord blood are related to the high number of hematopoietic progenitors present in the circulation at birth and to the relative immune immaturity of the newborn. A project is described to establish a European cord blood bank in order to obtain related or unrelated, matc

Pseudocholinesterase (E.C. 3.1.1.8) activity was measured in plasma of whole blood, bank blood, and several commercially available blood protein solutions by means of a colorimetric assay technique at 25 degrees C, pH 7.7, and with butyrylthiocholine as substrate (Merckotest-R No. 3337). Activity of whole blood was 5.79 plus or minus 0.20 U x ml-1, of bank blood 4.53 plus or minus 0.27 U x ml-1, and of two human serum solutions (Biseko-R, Seretin-R) 3.05 plus or minus 0.13 and 3.04 plus or minus 0.22 U x ml-1, respectively (mean plus or minus S.E.M.). The other blood protein solutions containe

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation has been used to treat thousands of patients, both adults and children, who have life-threatening hematological diseases. The principal limitations of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) are, for the majority of patients, the lack of suitable HLA-matched donors and the complications of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) associated with HLA mismatches. The lack of an HLA-identical sibling donor in 70% of the cases has been overcome through the establishment of registries of potential marrow donors. These registries, however, often

Transplantation and gene therapy offer the hope of treating thousands of individuals with various malignancies and genetic disorders. However, if this approach is to become a reality, there must be readily available sources of suitable HLA-A typed stem cells. Cord blood has been demonstrated to be a suitable source of hematopoietic stem cells that can be used in place of bone marrow stem cells for transplant. However, to implement the widespread clinical use of cord blood, it is necessary to establish both autologous and allogeneic cord blood banks from which stem cell specimens can be obtaine

Tissue transplantation and banking are rapidly growing services throughout the world reflecting the widening availability of transplantable cadaver tissue and the mounting clinical indications particularly in orthopaedic, plastic and cardiovascular surgery. In the US tissue banking is more established, yet continues to show a rapid growth profile. In the UK it is currently organised in a variety of different ways and by a number of different organisations. The risks of disease transmission by tissue transplantation are similar to those for blood transfusion and the majority of tissues are graf

Efforts to implement family cord blood banking have been developed in the past decades for siblings requiring stem cell transplantation for conditions such as sickle cell disease. However, public banks are faced with challenging decisions about the units to be stored, discarded, or used for other endeavors. We report here 20 years of experience in family cord blood banking for sickle cell disease in two dedicated public banks. Participants were pregnant women who had a previous child diagnosed with homozygous sickle cell disease. Participation was voluntary and free of charge. All mothers unde

We tested 220 red blood cell units for the presence of pharmaceuticals; 15 units (6.8%) were confirmed to contain low concentrations of opiates, benzodiazepines, stimulants, or barbiturates. Further study is needed to determine whether these drugs, which are not prohibited in donated blood by current Food and Drug Administration standards, could mediate adverse reactions in children.

This article reviews the various aspect of the experimental phase preceding the establishment of an umbilical cord blood (UCB) bank within a regular blood bank, a situation totally different from that of de novo establishing a cord blood bank having human and financial resources. An ethically approved two-year study has been conducted to determine the technical feasibility, and the practical problems that might be encountered such as public compliance, the additional workload, introduction of new activities ranging from collection and processing to progenitor expansion, infectious disease test

Planning health care for unknown situations is inevitably difficult. This case demonstrates how the US Navy used the WBB to provide blood replacement in a hemorrhaging patient when no other source of blood was available. Although transfusion at sea is a rare event, the availability of a well-planned blood transfusion program prevented a fatality and ultimately returned a sailor to his ship. It was an excellent test of materials, process, and personnel.

There still is no cure for the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Its etiologic agent is the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and transmission occurs through sexual relationships, contacts with blood, and vertically (mother to child). In this study, we sought to determine the prevalence of HIV among blood donors at a blood bank in Curitiba. We studied 213,666 blood donations made from March 1, 1992, to April 25, 1999. Each potential blood donor first answered a questionnaire, submitted to a clinical examination, and filled out a self-exclusion card. Blood was collected and analyzed

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Quality monitoring is a key component of the quality management system, closely related to the concept of quality improvement. The implementation of quality indicators (QIs), as a valuable quality monitoring tool, contributes to the achievement of quality objectives.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: During 2010, discussions about the importance and use of QIs in transfusion medicine intensified, and 3 years later, the Quality Management Working Party (QM-WP) of the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) published a set of QIs for blood establishments and hospital b

Neglected Tropical Diseases are a group of 25 conditions caused by diverse agents. They mostly affect people with poorer health outcomes, particularly preventable diseases. The social determinants of health influence the development and progression of these poverty diseases, with inadequate sanitation presenting chronicity, high morbidity, and economic impacts. Chagas disease, a prominent Neglected Tropical Disease caused by the intracellular pathogen Trypanosoma cruzi, is endemic in Latin America but is increasing as a global concern due to population migration. It is transmitted through inse

INTRODUCTION: Quality control for the detection of infectious markers in blood banks is a necessary activity to ensure the accuracy of donor screening results. Considering that in Mexico blood safety is one of the goals of the National Action Programs, it is essential to evaluate banks through an External Quality Control Program.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze one of the evaluations that showed the greatest participation (2014-2/lot46) of banks in the Mexican Republic in the detection of transfusion-transmitted diseases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A randomized panel of infectious markers of HIV, HCV, HBV

Exchange of blood units between transfusion services and blood depots, using EDP systems requires standardisation of unit identification and bar-codes. The ISBT Working Party on Data Processing defined recommendations for blood-unit identification by Codabar. Our group (German Society of Transfusion Medicine and Immunohematology, Section Data Processing and Standardization) extended and adapted these standards to the German blood bank settings. This paper describes the basic definitions and standards. A complete outline will be published in the next future.
