Elevation in white blood cell count and development of hyper LDL cholesterolemia.

To investigate the relationship between white blood cell (WBC) count and incidence of hyper-low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterolemia in a population-based longitudinal study. This is a retrospective study using data of annual health check-ups for residents of Iki City, Japan. A total of 3312 residents (≥ 30 years) without hyper-LDL cholesterolemia at baseline were included in this analysis. Primary outcome was incidence of hyper-LDL cholesterolemia (LDL cholesterol levels ≥ 3.62 mmol/L and/or use of lipid lowering drugs). During follow-up (average 4.6 years), 698 participants development

[Vascular myeloproliferative neoplasm with normal cell blood count: Exploration and medical management].

UNLABELLED: Negative BCR ABL myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) such as polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET) and primary myelofibrosis (MFP) are clonal hematological malignancies and may lead to a high risk of venous, arterial or microcirculatory thrombosis. Atypical sites of thrombosis can sometimes reveal the neoplasm disorder. Their diagnoses are a major issue because of the propensity to develop acute myeloid leukemia and/or myelofibrosis. The acquired JAK2V617F variant (Janus kinase 2; 9p24) is a prevalent MPN and also a sensitive marker for PV diagnosis (95% positive mut

The complete blood count and reticulocyte count--are they necessary in the evaluation of acute vasoocclusive sickle-cell crisis?

OBJECTIVE: To assess the usefulness of the complete blood count (CBC) and the reticulocyte count in the evaluation of adult patients with acute vasoocclusive sickle-cell crisis (SCC) presenting to the ED. METHODS: A 2-part study was performed. Part 1 was retrospective chart review of patients with a sole ED diagnosis of acute SCC. Part 2 was a prospective evaluation of consecutive patients presenting in SCC. In both parts of the study, patients with coexisting acute disease were excluded. The remaining patients were divided into 2 groups: admitted and released. The mean values for white blood

CD38+ T-Cell Count Is an Immunologic Phenotype Associated With Blood Pressure.

BACKGROUND: T lymphocytes play a crucial role in the development of hypertension and associated end-organ damage. CD38 is a well-established surface marker for T-cell activation. However, clinical evidence linking CD38+ T cells, or other specific T-cell subsets, with blood pressure (BP) changes remains limited. We therefore sought to determine whether CD38+ T-cell abundance correlates with BP and whether anti-CD38 therapy influences BP in humans and mice. METHODS: We performed correlation analyses between peripheral immune cell counts and BP in 197 normotensive and 53 hypertensive subjects. T

The value of white blood cell count in patients with swollen discs.

BACKGROUND: A broad differential diagnosis has to be considered in a patient with swollen discs. Myeloproliferative disorders such as leukemia and lymphoma can in rare cases cause infiltrative optic neuropathy. HISTORY AND SIGNS: Two patients initially presented with slowly progressive severe visual loss. History was unremarkable except for previously noted slightly elevated white blood cell count for which - according to their general physicians - no treatment or work-up was required. At presentation, bilateral disc swelling was present. Magnetic resonance imaging showed enhancement of the e

White blood cell count in generalized aggressive periodontitis after non-surgical therapy.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal bacteria are known to invade the systemic circulation. Chronic low-level bacteremia and a systemic inflammatory response have been suggested as a pathogenetic link between periodontal disease and atherosclerosis. The purpose of this study was to examine the systemic effect of a non-surgical therapy on white blood cell count (WBC count) and differential blood count in smoking and non-smoking generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAP) patients. METHODS: 27 adult periodontitis patients (13 smokers and 14 non-smokers) with previously untreated GAP were subjected to 3 sessi

Gut microbiota were altered with platelet count and red blood cell count in immune thrombocytopenia patients with different treatments.

The gut microbiome is clearly linked to the development of various autoimmune diseases, however, its association with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is less well understood. The current study collected 73 samples, including 36 from healthy individuals and 37 from ITP patients. The gut microbial community was assessed using 16s rRNA sequencing. Findings illustrated that the abundance of key microbiota was significantly higher in the ITP group. This group was further divided into three subgroups that received different treatments for ITP. A random forest model was used to predict the key microbio

Prognostic value of S-phase white blood cell count in B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Eighty previously untreated patients with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) were analyzed to study the proliferation rate of their peripheral blood (PB) leukocytes to determine its relationship with the extension of the disease and its value in discriminating among patients with similar tumor cell mass. The 80 B-CLL patients were distributed into two different groups according to the absolute count of PB S-phase leukocytes: a low proliferative group (less than 1 x 10(9)/I) of 48 patients and a high proliferative group (greater than or equal to 1 x 10(9)/I) of 32 patients. Blood count changes in malaria patients according to blood groups (ABO/Rh) and sickle cell trait.

INTRODUCTION: Introduction: Malaria continues to be the leading cause of hospitalization and death in Angola, a country in sub- Saharan Africa. In 2023, in the first quarter, 2,744,682 cases were registered, and of these 2,673 patients died due to malaria disease. Previous studies have shown that the ABO blood group can affect the progression of malaria to severe conditions after P. falciparum infection, while the sickle cell gene offers relative protection. OBJECTIVE: We investigated changes in the blood count according to blood groups (ABO/Rh) and sickle cell trait in patients with malaria

Establishing local reference intervals for full blood count and white blood cell differential counts in Cape Town, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Accurate laboratory reference intervals (RIs) are essential to differentiate between health and disease. There are variations in haematological indices within populations relating to gender, age, ethnicity and environment. Iron deficiency is common, has a wide range of clinical morbidities and affects red cell indices. Locally derived RIs for full blood count (FBC) parameters are needed for the Western Cape region of South Africa, after the exclusion of iron deficiency. In addition, information regarding the prevalence of iron deficiency in first-time blood donors would inform bloo

A model of oscillatory blood cell counts in chronic myelogenous leukaemia.

In certain blood diseases, oscillations are found in blood cell counts. Particularly, such oscillations are sometimes found in chronic myelogenous leukaemia, and then occur in all the derived blood cell types: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. It has been suggested that such oscillations arise because of an instability in the pluri-potential stem cell population, associated with its regulatory control system. In this paper, we consider how such oscillations can arise in a model of competition between normal (S) and genetically altered abnormal (A) stem cells, as the latter pop

White blood cell counts in patients undergoing abdominal surgery.

BACKGROUND: The role of pre-operative white blood cell counts (WBCC) in patients with an acute abdomen is contentious. METHODS: This study documents the association between pre-operative WBCC and the extent of intraperitoneal inflammation at the time of surgery in a heterogeneous group of 1166 patients undergoing abdominal surgery. RESULTS: WBCC failed to adequately discriminate between groups of patients with varying degrees of intraperitoneal inflammation. For example, only 31% (37/118) of the patients with either free pus or an abscess within the peritoneal cavity had a WBCC > 15.0 x 10(9

Blood Cell Counts and the Duffy Null Phenotype: Beyond Neutropenia.

The absence of Duffy antigen expression on red blood cells, caused by a single nucleotide polymorphism in the DARC/ACKR1 gene, confers protection against malaria and is associated with lower absolute neutrophil counts (ANC) in some studied populations. This study aimed to establish reference intervals for ANC and evaluate other hematologic parameters influenced by Duffy status in Brazilian individuals. In this prospective study, complete blood counts and Duffy phenotyping were performed in 311 healthy adult blood donors from two independent blood banks. Among participants, 51.4% were male, wit

Abnormal peripheral blood cell counts in neurofibromatosis type 1.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), also known as von Recklinghausen disease, is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by neurofibromas with infiltration of mast cells. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and basophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (BLR) are examined as markers for various diseases. However, these parameters have not yet been assessed for NF1. This study therefore examined these parameters in NF1 patients. We recruited 153 NF patients (78 males, 75 females) and 51 control patients (31 males, 20 females). Complete

Hyperventilation-induced changes of blood cell counts depend on hypocapnia.

Voluntary hyperventilation for 20 min causes haemoconcentration and an increase of white blood cell and thrombocyte numbers. In this study, we investigated whether these changes depend on the changes of blood gases or on the muscle work of breathing. A group of 12 healthy medical students breathed 36 l.min-1 of air, or air with 5% CO2 for a period of 20 min. The partial pressure of CO2 decreased by 21.4 mmHg (2.85 kPa; P < 0.001) with air and by 4.1 mmHg (0.55 kPa; P < 0.005) with CO2 enriched air. This was accompanied by haemoconcentration of 8.9% with air (P < 0.01) and of 1.6% with CO2 enri
