Evaluation of the Dinamap 8100 and Omron M1 blood pressure monitors for use in children.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the Dinamap 8100 and the Omron M1 (the test devices) against standard criteria for use in children in a fieldwork setting. Device calibration and validation were carried out in accordance with the British Hypertension Society protocol for special groups such as children. A total of 102 children, recruited from infant and junior schools in Southampton, had six sequential measurements made of their blood pressure-four measurements with a mercury sphygmomanometer and two with one of two test devices, 55 children with the Dinamap 8100 and 47 with the Omron M1.

Perinatal Remote Blood Pressure Monitoring.

Perinatal mortality and severe maternal morbidity among individuals with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are often driven by persistent, uncontrolled hypertension. Whereas traditional perinatal blood pressure (BP) ascertainment occurs through in-person clinic appointments, self-measured blood pressure (SMBP) programs allow individuals to measure their BP remotely and receive remote management by a medical team. Though data remain limited on clinically important outcomes such as maternal morbidity, these programs have shown promise in improving BP ascertainment rates in the immediate

Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring in Pediatrics.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This is a review of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) use in pediatrics, summarizing current knowledge and uses of ABPM. RECENT FINDINGS: Updated guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics have emphasized the value of ABPM. ABPM is necessary to diagnose white coat hypertension, masked hypertension, and nocturnal hypertension associated with specific conditions. There is growing evidence that ABPM may be useful in these populations. ABPM has been demonstrated to be more predictive of end-organ damage in pediatric hypertension compared to office blood pressu

Blood pressure variability and ambulatory monitoring.

The inherent variability of blood pressure means that the accuracy of a small number of clinic readings in estimating the true blood pressure is limited. In many patients, a clinic visit provokes an increase in blood pressure such that they may be misclassified as being hypertensive (white coat hypertension). This applies to about 20% of hypertensives. Ambulatory monitoring has the potential to overcome these limitations. The white coat effect may still occur in patients taking antihypertensive medications, although in some cases medication may lower the clinic pressure without affecting the a

Home blood pressure monitoring in CKD.

Hypertension is common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the prevalence increases with declining kidney function. Hypertension management is particularly important due to the increased risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke in the CKD population. Most clinical decisions for blood pressure (BP) management are based on BP readings in the office or dialysis unit. These BP readings often are inaccurate. Home BP monitoring provides more data than conventional clinic or dialysis-unit BP measurements and is relatively easy to accomplish, is cost-effective, and has been shown to hav

Home monitoring of glucose and blood pressure.

Home monitoring of blood glucose and blood pressure levels can provide patients and physicians with valuable information in the management of diabetes mellitus and hypertension. Home monitoring allows patients to play an active role in their care and may improve treatment adherence and clinical outcomes. Glucose meters currently on the market produce results within 15 percent of serum blood glucose readings and offer a variety of features. Although the data are somewhat conflicting, home glucose monitoring has been associated with improved glycemic control and reduced long-term complications f

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in hypertension.

Compared with blood pressure measurements in the office setting, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring offers a more accurate and reliable method of diagnosing and managing hypertension. Indications for ambulatory blood pressure monitoring include borderline hypertension, a discrepancy between home and office blood pressure measurements, persistent blood pressure elevation in the office with no end-organ damage, episodic elevations of blood pressure or suggestive symptoms, hypertension resistant to treatment, episodic angina not related to exercise, end-organ damage but normal office blood pres

[Reproducibility of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring].

Short-term blood pressure variability has been studied extensively with monitoring techniques. To assess whether or not and to what extent average 24-hour blood pressure varies when repeatedly recorded, 12 mild to moderate hypertensive subjects underwent 3 non-invasive blood pressure monitorings at monthly intervals. When the average 24-hour blood pressure of the whole group was evaluated no substantial differences were found between the 3 recordings, even though slightly lower blood pressure values were recorded at the first monitoring. However, when the within-period comparison was studied i

Improving Blood Pressure Management and Control With Out-of-Office Blood Pressure Monitoring.

Out-of-office blood pressure (BP) monitoring is a critical component of modern hypertension diagnosis and management. Measuring BP outside of clinic reduces the stress response that contributes to white coat hypertension and also allows for the identification of masked hypertension, yielding more accurate cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk assessment and improved CVD prevention. Home BP monitoring and 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring outperform office BP in predicting CVD outcomes and are cost-effective aspects to cardiovascular health promotion by preventing unnecessary treatment, reducing cli

Photoplethysmography based remote cardiac blood pressure monitoring compared with 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the accuracy of a novel wrist-worn cuff-calibrated photoplethysmography (PPG)-based remote patient monitoring device as an alternative to ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). METHODS: This prospective single-center study included 40 adult patients undergoing standard 24 h ABPM with a 30-min measurement interval. Participants were equipped with a wrist-worn PPG device (CardioWatch 287-2; Corsano Health B.V., The Hague, The Netherlands, manufactured by MMT, Geneva, Switzerland) throughout the ABPM period. Investigational and reference measurements were compared us

'Office-hour' ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is sufficient for blood pressure diagnosis.

We conducted this study to determine whether 'office hour', defined as time period from 0800 to 1800 hours, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) predicts daytime ('waking-hour') and 24-h ABPM results, and to examine the impact of sleep disturbance on ABPM and nocturnal dip. Eighty-four patients (mean age 49+/-18 years, 47 males) were studied. Systolic, diastolic and mean 4-, 6-, 8-, 'office-hour' as well as 'waking-hour' blood pressures (BPs) were obtained from 24-h ABPM readings. Of these, no statistical differences were found between 8-h and 'office-hour' systolic, diastolic and mean

Can Currently Available Non-invasive Continuous Blood Pressure Monitors Replace Invasive Measurement With an Arterial Catheter?

Deviations from normal blood pressure (BP) during general anesthesia have been clearly linked to several adverse outcomes. Measuring BP accurately is therefore critically important for producing excellent outcomes in health care. Normal BP does not necessarily guarantee adequate organ perfusion however and adverse events have occurred even when BP seemed adequate. Invasive blood pressure monitoring has recently evolved beyond merely measuring BP. Arterial line-derived pulse contour analysis is used now to assess both cardiac output and stroke volume variation as indices of adequate intravascul

A novel and simple protocol for the validation of home blood pressure monitors in clinical practice.

BACKGROUNDS: Although the European Society of Hypertension International Protocol for the validation of blood pressure (BP) measuring devices has simplified the validation protocol, it is still not feasible for use in routine clinical practice. OBJECTIVES: We sought to devise a method for validating individual home blood pressure (HBP) monitors that is simple enough for use in routine clinical practice. METHODS: We consecutively enrolled 92 hypertensive patients (mean age: 63.2 ± 14.6 years) from the hypertension clinic at the Columbia University Medical Center. Five sequential same-arm BP r

Case report: use of a cuffless blood pressure monitoring device compared to ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in a pregnant patient.

BACKGROUND: Blood pressure (BP) monitoring is crucial for the management of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Cuffless, continuous BP-monitoring devices have been developed, but have yet to be validated during pregnancy. OBJECTIVES: To describe the case of a 37-year-old patient presenting primary hyperaldosteronism, who suffered from severe preeclampsia during her first pregnancy. She chose to wear a cuffless BP monitoring device (AKTIIA) during her second pregnancy while undergoing three 24-h ABPM sessions. She developed preeclampsia, leading to hospitalisation and premature birth at 32 w

WATCH-BPM-Comparison of a WATCH-Type Blood Pressure Monitor with a Conventional Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitor and Auscultatory Sphygmomanometry.

BACKGROUND: Smart devices that are able to measure blood pressure (BP) are valuable for hypertension or heart failure management using digital technology. Data regarding their diagnostic accuracy in comparison to standard noninvasive measurement in accordance to Riva-Rocci are sparse. This study compared a wearable watch-type oscillometric BP monitor (Omron HeartGuide), a wearable watch-type infrared BP monitor (Smart Wear), a conventional ambulatory BP monitor, and auscultatory sphygmomanometry. METHODS: Therefore, 159 consecutive patients (84 male, 75 female, mean age 64.33 ± 16.14 years) p

Home Blood Pressure monitoring: An economical, reliable, and convenient Tool over ambulatory Blood Pressure monitoring in Patients on Dialysis.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients on dialysis. Blood pressure (BP) control is of paramount importance in reducing morbidity and mortality in this high-risk population, although there is no consensus on target BP. Ambulatory BP recording is considered gold standard in estimating the BP among patients on dialysis. But, ambulatory BP recording is cumbersome, not economical, and not easily available to Indian patients. Therefore, an easier and more convenient method has to be implemented to monitor the BP.
