This article outlines the history and rationale of a multisite study of blood-borne infections among persons with severe mental illness reported in this special section of Psychiatric Services. The general problem of blood-borne diseases in the United States is reviewed, particularly as it affects people with severe mental illness and those with comorbid substance use disorders. The epidemiology and natural history of three of the most important infections are reviewed: the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the hepatitis B virus, and the hepatitis C virus. Current knowledge about blood-borne

Sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBI)-which include HIV, hepatitis B and C, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and human papillomavirus-remain significant public health issues both nationally and globally. In 2018, a Pan-Canadian STBBI Framework for Action (the Framework) was released by federal, provincial and territorial governments to provide an overarching and comprehensive approach to addressing STBBI for all those involved. This includes all levels of government, First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities and leadership, frontline service providers, clinicians, public healt

BACKGROUND: There are several studies on prevalence of individual infectious disease markers (mono-infection) in donors but none on prevalence of coinfection. Co-infection is significant as it leads to accelerated disease progression. We, therefore, evaluated the prevalence of co-infection among blood donors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cross-sectional analysis was conducted in blood donors. All donors were tested for anti-HIV I and II, HBsAg, anti-HBC IgM, anti-HCV, Malaria and syphilis by chemiluminescence and ID-NAT assay. All reactive donor samples were confirmed by using confirmatory assa

Patients can be infected with hepatitis B or C or HIV as a result of exposure to blood of infected health professionals, especially surgeons. This article reviews the literatureon single and multiple cases of such infections. Risk factors for exposure and for infection are summarised. The probability of infection after a single exposure is reviewed. Standard recommendations for prevention on infection from health controversy and this also considered. Experts and regulatory bodies in Poland need to take decisions and prepare written policies on how best to prevent transfer of blood borne viruse

BACKGROUND: In Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and other related transmissible spongiform encephalopathies it is critical to understand the various pathways by which the infectious agent spreads to different organs.
METHODS: We injected a CJD agent into mice, either intracerebrally (ic) or intraperitoneally (ip) and monitored the progressive appearance of abnormal PrP in peripheral tissues over time.
RESULTS: Abnormal PrP was detected in lymphoreticular tissues of the gastrointestinal tract as early as 28 to 32 days after infection by both routes. This change persisted until the terminal sta

To find out the incidence of accidental exposure to blood borne infections by the operation team in the department of plastic surgery a three month survey was carried out. All episodes of exposure of unprotected skin or mucous membranes to blood were recorded. There were 94 accidents in 746 operations, and 17 (18%) of the injuries penetrated the skin. These were mostly self injuries, typically the surgeon injuring his non-dominant index finger. Only one injured person wanted the patient to have an HIV test after the injury, and none of the injured people wanted an HIV test. Only two reported t

The lymphocyte subpopulations in the peripheral blood of normal sheep and sheep experimentally infected with Cytoecetes phagocytophila, the causative agent of tick-borne fever, were analysed by flow cytometry, using a panel of monoclonal antibodies against specific lymphocyte epitopes. Experimental infection with tick-borne fever was characterised by a significant reduction in the total number of circulating lymphocytes six days after experimental infection (P less than 0.001). This lymphocytopenia was associated with a significant reduction in the number of B (LCAp220+) and T (CD5+) lymphocyt

BACKGROUND: MyCheck is an e-testing pathway, first implemented at Sydney Sexual Health Centre, which enhances access to STI/HIV testing via telehealth and off-site sample collection; thus, reducing clinic visits. This study evaluates MyCheck's direct and indirect costs versus standard in-person screening (Xpress).
METHODS: A 12-month bottom-up cost analysis from a societal perspective compared MyCheck and Xpress. Direct medical (health system), direct non-medical (patient travel) and indirect non-medical (productivity) costs were calculated using retrospective Sydney Sexual Health Centre data

Cultivating and inspiring students' interests in performing experiments and improving students' diagnostic skills and scientific research capability for infectious diseases like malaria are critical to comprehensive experimental teaching of morphology. Consequently, Soochow University initiated a problem-based hands-on inquiry-based comprehensive experiment program of blood-borne protozoa infections and diagnosis, which took students in the "5 + 3" integrated program of clinical medicine as the teaching targets, and it consisted of three parts: pre-class, in-class, and post-class. Many sick dogs brought to the University of Ibadan Veterinary Teaching Hospital (UIVTH) are infested with ticks and are anemic. Up until recently, light microscopy (LM) has been the only available means used for detection of blood-borne infections. In other parts of the world, PCR-based assays been used as a gold standard for accurate diagnosis of blood-borne infections. In this study, we used LM and broad-spectrum rRNA gene PCR-based assays on 116 blood samples from dogs brought to the UIVTH for detection of the 18S rRNA gene of Babesia and the 16S rRNA genes of Ehrlichia and hemotropic mycop

The interaction between blood-borne pathogens and fibrinolysis is one of the most important mechanisms that mediate invasion and the establishment of infectious agents in their hosts. However, overproduction of plasmin (final product of the route) has been related in other contexts to proliferation and migration of the arterial wall cells and degradation of the extracellular matrix. We have recently identified fibrinolysis-activating antigens from Dirofilaria immitis, a blood-borne parasite whose key pathological event (proliferative endarteritis) is produced by similar mechanisms to those ind

INTRODUCTION: In Australia, Aboriginal youth are disproportionately represented in juvenile detention centres. We assessed the prevalence of sexually transmissible infections (STIs) and blood-borne viruses (BBVs) identified by an Aboriginal Health Worker (AHW)-led screening program delivered to male detainees of a rural juvenile detention centre.
METHODS: A retrospective review of first screening visit data was performed. Demographic and behavioural data were collected and the prevalence of STI/BBV was assessed.
RESULTS: Over a 4-year period to November 2004, 101 screens on new medium-to-lon

BACKGROUND: Injecting drug users (IDUs) are a marginalised population, who infrequently access health services for screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and blood borne viruses (BBVs), and are at high risk of these infections.
OBJECTIVES: To use street outreach and self collection of samples for STI screening, to establish the prevalence of BBVs and STIs, and to identify risk behaviours among a group of culturally diverse street based IDUs.
METHODS: This was a cross sectional study of 314 IDUs in the central business district of Melbourne, Australia, conducted over 3 years (19
