Evaluation of a Novel Multiplex High-Definition PCR Assay for Detection of Tick-Borne Pathogens in Whole-Blood Specimens.

The prevalence of tick-borne infections has been steadily increasing in both number and geographic distribution in the United States and abroad. This increase, in conjunction with the continued recognition of novel pathogens transmitted by ticks, has made accurate diagnosis of these infections challenging. Mainstay serologic tests are insensitive during the acute phase of infection and are often cross-reactive with similar pathogenic and nonpathogenic organisms. Further, they are unable to reliably differentiate active versus past infection which can lead to misdiagnosis and incorrect understa

Molecular and serological detection of animal and human vector-borne pathogens in the blood of dogs from Côte d'Ivoire.

In Côte d'Ivoire, limited information are available on vector-borne pathogens, their prevalence and distribution. Here, we assess the occurrence and diversity of canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) in Abidjan and Yamoussoukro cities. Blood from a total of 123 dogs were tested for Leishmania infantum and Ehrlichia canis antibodies and screened for Leishmania and Trypanosoma spp., Piroplasmida, Filariidae and Anaplasmataceae by PCR and sequencing. Among dogs, 39 % were positive for at least one pathogen. Seroprevalences were: 15.4 % and 12.2 % for L. infantum and E. canis, respectively. DNA of

Syringe-mediated drug sharing among injecting drug users: patterns, social context and implications for transmission of blood-borne pathogens.

Drug injectors are at risk for infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other blood-borne pathogens through the exchange of (infected) blood resulting from unhygienic injecting practices. Research attention and public discussion have focused primarily on the sharing of syringes and needles. While the focus on syringe sharing has sparked important interventions (bleach distribution, syringe exchange) it may have obscured the social relationship in which injecting equipment is used. Drug sharing plays a crucial role in the social organization of the drug using subculture. In this pa

Occurrence of tick-borne pathogens in questing ticks, ticks from riding horses, and red deer blood in Western Pomerania, Poland.

Ixodes ricinus is a widespread vector of numerous microorganisms pathogenic to humans and animals in Europe. The risk of exposure to tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) has increased in recent years due to climate change, the conversion of natural green areas to recreational areas, and growing human and animal populations, including pets. Using molecular methods, the prevalence, diversity, and co-occurrence of selected tick-borne microorganisms were assessed in questing I. ricinus collected from recreational areas (n = 409), in ticks feeding on horses (n = 135), and in blood samples from red deer (n =

Detection and Differentiation of Lyme Spirochetes and Other Tick-Borne Pathogens from Blood Using Real-Time PCR with Molecular Beacons.

Real-time PCR assays have recently been implemented in diagnostics for many bacterial pathogens, allowing rapid and accurate detection, which ultimately results in improved clinical intervention. Here, we describe a sensitive method of detection for three common tick-borne pathogens Borrelia burgdorferi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Babesia microti since coinfections with these pathogens have started occurring with increasing frequency over the last several years in both North America and Europe. A shared geographic region, the same tick vectors, and similar transmission cycle all favor simu

Fox on the run--molecular surveillance of fox blood and tissue for the occurrence of tick-borne pathogens in Austria.

BACKGROUND: The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is a widespread species, harbouring many pathogens relevant for humans and pets. Indeed, Anaplasma spp., Ehrlichia canis and Rickettsia spp. among the bacteria and Hepatozoon canis as well as Babesia sp. among the parasites have been the focus of several studies. FINDINGS: In a cohort of 36 foxes shot on one day in the north-eastern part of Austria, Babesia microti-like pathogens were found in 50%, while H. canis was detected in 58.3% of the samples. The spleen was more useful for detection of H. canis, whereas B. microti-like parasites were more freque

[Protection of health care personnel from occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens: problems in legislative and other documents adopted in different countries].

Contact with human blood is one of the vital issues concerning occupational exposure to biological factors. The fact that pathogens that create high health risk may be transmitted by blood must not be ignored. Considering the problem of biological exposure at workplace, HIV, HBV and HCV are recognized as the most essential viruses. Health care workers belong to the occupational group characterized by the most frequent contact with blood. Infections induced by blood borne pathogens are mostly observed among nurses, laboratory personnel and physicians. In the European Union countries, the USA an

Multiplex-RT-PCR-ELISA panel for detecting mosquito-borne pathogens: Plasmodium sp. preserved and eluted from dried blood spots on sample cards.

BACKGROUND: Children are the most vulnerable group affected by malaria and other tropical, vector-borne diseases in low-resource countries. Infants presenting with acute onset fever represent a major sector of outpatient care in the Lake Victoria region. Misclassification and overuse of antibiotics and anti-malarial medications are consistent problems. Identifying the prevalent mosquito-borne pathogens in the region will reduce the prescription of non-indicated medicines. METHODS: The literature was reviewed focusing on the mosquito-borne pathogens most prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. Accord

Occupational exposures and the prevalence of blood-borne pathogens in a deployed setting: data from a US military trauma center in Afghanistan.

OBJECTIVE: Occupational exposures to blood and other bodily fluids occur in approximately 5 per 100 persons every year in US hospitals. Since the provision of health care in the deployed environment poses unique challenges to hospital personnel, it is important to characterize the rates of occupational exposures and understand the prevalence of blood-borne pathogens (BBPs) in host nations. METHODS: A retrospective review of public health and laboratory records at a US military trauma center in Afghanistan from October 1, 2010, to March 31, 2012. RESULTS: A total of 65 occupational exposures

[Occupational injuries with risk of transmission of blood-borne pathogens. A study of a 2-year material from the Holstebro Central Hospital].

In order to illuminate causes of accidental occupational exposure of the house staff at the Central Hospital of Holstebro (CHH) to the potential hazards of HIV- and HBV-transmission, all cases of reported injuries occurring in 1991-1992 have been analysed. Needleprick lesions were found to account for the great majority of the reported cases (71%). Sixty-six percent of all injuries were self-inflicted during medical procedures, while 34% were caused by another person, either directly (simultaneous contact of two persons with the contaminated sharp object) or indirectly as a result of carelessn
