A pesticide exposure baseline for honey bees was compiled for two New England cropping systems, the native North American plant species consisting of lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Aiton) and cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton). More unique pesticide compounds were applied in blueberry than cranberry, but the numbers of pesticides discovered in trapped honey bee pollen were similar between the two crop systems. Not all pesticides found in pollen were the result of the applications reported by growers of either crop. When comparing residues, number of pesticides detected, total

Blueberries (Vaccinium spp.) are a high-value horticultural crop prized for their nutritional properties, particularly their high content of bioactive compounds such as anthocyanins and flavonoids, which confer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. However, their thin epidermis makes them highly susceptible to postharvest infections under humid conditions, with diseases caused by Botrytis cinerea and Colletotrichum spp. accounting for 20%-50% of total losses. Conventional chemical and cold storage strategies are increasingly constrained by resistance development, chemical residues, and l

Selenium (Se) is an important micronutrient that is required in very small amounts and plays a significant role in enhancing plant growth, stress resistance, and fruit quality. In this study, we investigated the effects of different sodium selenite concentrations (CK, 0 mg/L; Se1, 0.50 mg/L; Se2, 1.00 mg/L, Se3, 2.00; and Se4, 3.00 mg/L) on the growth, nutrient absorption, antioxidant capacity, and leaf metabolome of blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L. 'Brigitta') in hydroponic culture. Our results showed that moderate Se concentration (1.00 mg/L, Se2) had noticeable enhancements in key traits

Pesticide drift into sensitive habitats is an increasing concern in agricultural landscapes due to negative impacts on non-target animals including wild bees and other beneficial insects. Creating buffer zones between the crop and sensitive habitats has been commonly proposed as a mitigation measure for reducing off-target pesticide deposition. Given prior evidence of significant pesticide deposition in wildflower plantings adjacent to highbush blueberry farms in Michigan, the aim of this study was to determine the buffer zone needed to significantly reduce pesticide deposition in these planti

Composts of edible fungal substrates (CEFS) and Chinese herbal residues (CCHR) are potential ecological organic fertilizers, which are sustainable for blueberry cultivation. But how the two composts affect the fertility and the migration or transformation of heavy metals (HMs) in blueberry soil is unknown. In this study, we conducted a field trial by comparing CEFS and CCHR to the special fruit organic fertilizer in the market (SFOF) and potassium sulfate compound fertilizers (PSCF) according to a three-year continuous fertilization experiment in blueberry. We aimed to reveal the effect of dif

To quantitatively measure the impacts during blueberry harvesting and post-harvest handling, this study designed the second generation Berry Impact Recording Device (BIRD II) sensor with a size of 21 mm in diameter and a weight of 3.9 g, which reduced the size by 17% and the weight by 50% compared to the previous prototype. The sensor was able to measure accelerations up to 346 g at a maximum frequency of 2 KHz. Universal Serial Bus (USB) was used to directly connect the sensor with the computer, removing the interface box used previously. LabVIEW-based PC software was designed to configure th

New blueberry plantings in South Africa have increased dramatically since the year 2000, exceeding the global expansion rate. The crop is, however, impacted by several economically important fungal pathogens. Lesser-known fungi such as pestalotioid species can cause leaf and twig blight, and have the potential to become a global threat to blueberry production and expansion. This study aimed to assess the presence of such fungal species in blueberry nurseries in South Africa due to the industry's exponential growth and mass introduction of new cultivars. Symptomatic leaf and twig samples were c

Several species of berries, such as blueberries (Vaccinium angustifolium) and lingonberries (Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.), have attracted much scientific attention in recent years, especially due to their reported antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Berries, as with other types of plants, have developed metabolic mechanisms to survive various environmental stresses, some of which involve reactive oxygen species. In addition, the fruits and leaves of berries have high amounts of polyphenols, such as flavonoids, which act as potent antioxidants. These compounds could potentially be benefi

To accurately monitor the phenology of the bloom period and the temporal dynamics of floral chemical cues on fungal fruit rotting pathogens, floral extraction methods and coverslip bioassays were developed utilizing Colletotrichum fioriniae. In blueberry and cranberry, this pathogen is optimally controlled by applying fungicides during the bloom period because of the role flowers play in the initial stages of infection. The protocol detailed here describes how floral extracts (FE) were obtained using water-, chloroform-, and field rainwater-based methods for later use in corresponding glass co

Beekeepers engaging in highbush blueberry pollination in Canada and the U.S. have raised concerns over poor colony health outcomes presenting as European foulbrood disease (EFB), which highlights a need for improved management strategies supporting colony health during and after pollination. We assessed over 200 colonies belonging to five beekeepers before, at the end, and three weeks following the end of the blueberry pollination period. Half of the colonies at each site were provided with MegaBee pollen supplement and scored for EFB prevalence and severity to test the hypothesis that protein

The sweetness of blueberry fruit increases over time, as acids are converted to sugars, and full flavor development is formed by harvest. We comprehensively analyzed the changes and correlation in physiological and biochemical characteristics of blueberries at different maturity stages, including texture, quality, taste and energy change. Our analysis revealed that total anthocyanin content increased and firmness decreased as fruit ripened. Percent moisture, titratable acid (TA), chlorophyll and carotenoid content also decreased, while total soluble solids (TSS), pH, TSS/TA ratio, vitamin C, s

Overhead sprinkler compared to drip irrigation in cropping systems can result in increased relative humidity (RH) and decreased temperature within the plant canopy. Such conditions may also result in a more favorable microclimate for pests. Drosophila suzukii Matsumura is an invasive agricultural pest of berries in America and Europe. Drosophila suzukii is susceptible to high temperatures and low RH, thus its survival may be affected by different irrigation methods. We tested how drip and overhead sprinkler irrigation in blueberries influenced temperature and RH. Furthermore, we determined how

Cadmium (Cd(2+)) can affect plant growth due to its mobility and toxicity. We evaluated the effects of Cd(2+) on the production of phenolic compounds and antioxidant response of Vaccinium corymbosum L. Plantlets were exposed to Cd(2+) at 50 and 100µM for 7, 14 and 21 days. Accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and the antioxidant enzyme SOD was determined. The profile of phenolic compounds was evaluated using LC-MS. The antioxidant activity was measured using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and the ferric reducing antioxidant power test (FRAP). Cd(2+) increased t

BACKGROUND: Fruit growers largely depend on chemical control to reduce populations of the economically damaging invasive fly, Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura). Drosophila suzukii is susceptible to high temperatures and low humidity; therefore, it may be possible to implement cultural control practices that create microclimates unfavorable for its development and survival. In addition to other fruit production benefits, in-row mulches may impede the development of D. suzukii immatures when larvae leave the fruit to pupate in the soil. This study compared the effects of different mulches (black po

This study explores an innovative approach based on deep eutectic solvent (DES)-synergistic ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) of anthocyanins from blueberry pomace (BP). Choline chloride-lactic acid (ChCl-LA, 1:2) was identified as the most efficient DES and provided the highest anthocyanin recovery. The optimal conditions for ChCl-LA-synergistic UAE (ChCl-LA-UAE) were obtained as follows: ultrasonic power of 270 W, extraction time of 30 min, liquid-to-solid ratio of 35:1, and water content in ChCl-LA of 40%, achieving a total anthocyanin content (TAC) of 3.5168 mg/g, with R2 = 0.9860.
