The proportion of obese or overweight patients in COPD patients is increasing. Although BMI, WC and other easy to measure indicators have been proven to be related to the risk of COPD, they cannot accurately reflect the distribution and changes of body composition, ignoring the body composition (such as fat distribution, muscle content, water content, etc.), the relationship between it and disease risk may be missed. By analyzing the correlation between different body composition indexes and COPD patients, we can provide new research ideas for the prognosis judgment or intervention of COPD dis

INTRODUCTION: In pregnancy after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), there is increased risk of low birthweight in the offspring. The present study examined how offspring body composition was affected by RYGB.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Mother-newborn dyads, where the mothers had undergone RYGB were included. Main outcome measure was neonatal body composition. Neonatal body composition was assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scanning (DXA) within 48 hours after birth. In a statistical model offspring born after RYGB were compared with a reference material of offspring and analyses were made

STUDY QUESTION: Is couples' body compositions associated with reduced fecundity as measured by a longer time-to-pregnancy (TTP)?
SUMMARY ANSWER: Couples whose BMI are within obese class II (≥35 kg/m2) have a longer TTP in comparison to leaner (BMI < 25 kg/m2) couples, observed only when both partner's BMI was jointly modeled.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Extremes of BMI have been associated with a longer TTP and with less successful assisted reproductive technology (ART) outcomes. To our knowledge, the association between measured adiposity in both partners of the couple and prospectively measured

OBJECTIVE: Maternal smoking during pregnancy is associated with a reduction in birth size but very few studies have collated changes in neonatal anthropometry. Our aims were both to assess body composition differences by anthropometry between new-borns from smoking mothers and those from non-smoking mothers, and to show whether these differences affect proportional body mass distribution.
METHODS: Caucasian mothers and their full term singleton new-borns (N=1216) were selected during 2009. A structured questionnaire was completed regarding obstetric and demographic data, as well as tobacco co

UNLABELLED: The aim of the study was to evaluate adiponectin (AD) serum concentrations in 43 stable CF patients and 27 healthy subjects and to correlate them with their nutritional status. Body Composition (Bioelectrical Impedance), visceral/subcutaneous adipose tissue (VAT-SAT) in CF patients (CT-scan at L4), insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and AD serum concentrations (ELISA) were studied. CF patients and controls had comparable weight, height, %BF, %FFM, fasting glucose, insulin and insulin resistance. CF patients had significantly lower BMI-SDS. CF males had higher %FFM and total FFM and lower

Nutritional status is one of the most important clinical determinants of outcome after gastrectomy. The aim of this study was to compare changes in the body composition of patients undergoing laparoscopy-assisted gastrectomy (LAG), distal gastrectomy (DG), or total gastrectomy (TG). Total body protein and fat mass were measured by performing a multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis using an inBody II machine (Biospace, Tokyo, Japan) in 108 patients (72 men, 36 women) who had undergone LAG (n=24), DG (n=39), or TG (n=45). To study the relationship between diaphragm weight and body composition, we measured fat body mass and lean body mass by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (XR-26, Norland), and weighed the diaphragms of patients at autopsy. The subjects were 22 patients with various diseases (13 men and 9 women, aged 72.6 +/- 9.5 years). In 8 of the patients, respiratory muscle strength was assessed with maximal pressure at the mouth. The diaphragm weight was 185.2 +/- 58.2 g and it correlated significantly with lean body mass (r = 0.77, r = 0.73, p < 0.01). Maximal inspiratory pressure at TLC correlated signif

Body composition of 1815 North-Italian young sports participants in relation to sex, age, sport and level of performance was investigated. About thickness and anatomical distribution of subcutaneous fat females showed skinfolds thicker than males. Significant differences were observed in skinfold thicknesses means of different sport-groups. Subscapular and forearm skinfolds were the best discriminant variables for males and females respectively. Body density was estimated according to Katch and McArdle (1973) and Durnin and Womersley (1974) equations. Males showed higher body density and lower

The nutritional status and total body composition of 33 patients with malnutrition after biliopancreatic bypass were studied. Body composition was evaluated directly by measurement of water and total sodium and indirectly by measurement of total body potassium. After nutrition with a parenteral nutritional support the conventional nutritional parameters were restored to the normal values (serum albumin and serum transferrin) and the parameters of body composition were markedly improved even though still altered with respect to healthy controls. Serum albumin and serum transferrin were shown to

INTRODUCTION: Traditionally, total body (TB) dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans to assess body composition include the entire body, however novel abbreviated acquisition methods exist. The purpose of this study was to evaluate comparability of measured and estimated body composition results using three novel acquisition techniques; total body less head (TBLH), neck to knee (NTK) and lower extremity (LE). We hypothesized that body composition mass with these three novel methods would not differ from traditional TB acquisition.
METHODS: Each subject had TB, TBLH, NTK and LE scans acqu

Obesity and excess in fat versus lean mass is well known to enhance the risk of mortality and morbidity. Several recent works have pointed the importance of analysing more precisely body composition for the assessment of prognosis of patients in terms of cardiovascular outcomes and mortality. The body mass index (BMI), commonly used for defining obese patients, does not give sufficient indication on the body composition and distribution of fat mass. In the elderly population, relative excess in fat mass associated with a decrease in lean mass is frequently observed. In such situations of sarco

Obesity, sarcopenia, malnutrition, and cachexia all include assessment of body composition in their respective clinical guidelines, although patient evaluations frequently require hardware that may not be available. Body mass index often fills this void, but its accuracy as a body composition phenotyping method is limited. Recent advances suggest a new option for assessing patient body composition: omics-derived circulating blood biomarkers applied in combination with demographic information or alone to estimate the mass or volume of clinically relevant body components. The origin of this move

IMPORTANCE: An emerging paradigm attributes third-trimester fetal growth deceleration in uncomplicated twin pregnancies to an evolutionary adaptive process. Evaluating longitudinal fetal soft-tissue development may provide important insights into differential fetal growth trajectories between twins and singletons.
OBJECTIVE: To compare twin vs singleton lean and fat tissue growth across pregnancy.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Prospective cohort study of dichorionic twins and singletons with serial ultrasound scans to chart fetal growth (2009-2013) and collect fetal volume data to measu

Infants born with congenital gastroschisis are at risk for intrauterine growth restriction, small for gestational size at birth, and growth failure during the newborn period despite advanced care. Body composition provides a more complete picture of proportional growth than weight and length alone. Fat-free mass (FFM) represents organ growth, and in preterm infants without gastroschisis, improved FFM deposition is associated with improved neurodevelopmental outcomes. There is limited literature regarding the body composition of infants with gastroschisis. This case series describes the body co

Aging is associated with changes in body composition, including both fat gain and muscle loss beginning in middle age, and is associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Moreover, changes in fat distribution take place in adults as they age and may contribute to the increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Recent literature has shown differences in the age-related changes in body composition by diabetes status suggesting that some of these changes might not only be a risk factor of the development of diabetes but could also be a consequence of the disease. In this article, we review the curre

BACKGROUND: Precise and accurate measurements of body composition are useful in achieving a greater understanding of human energy metabolism in physiology and in different clinical conditions, such as, cardiovascular disease and overall mortality. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) can be used to measure body composition, but the easiest method to assess body composition is the use of anthropometric indices. This study has been designed to evaluate the accuracy and precision of body composition prediction equations by various anthropometric measures instead of a whole body DXA scan.
