PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize the recent literature examining eating disorders, eating behavior, and body image in middle-aged and elderly women.
RECENT FINDINGS: A small but evolving literature has begun to address the epidemiology, features, and potential treatment of eating disorders and related body-image concerns in middle-aged and elderly women. Preliminary findings suggest that pathological eating behaviors and frank eating disorders are surprisingly common in older women, as are associated body-image disturbances. Older women appear less likely to exhibit anorexia and bulimia nervos

Because few prospective studies have examined predictors of body dissatisfaction--an established risk factor for eating disorders--the authors tested whether a set of sociocultural, biological, interpersonal, and affective factors predicted increases in body dissatisfaction using longitudinal data from adolescent girls (N = 496). Elevated adiposity, perceived pressure to be thin, thin-ideal internalization, and social support deficits predicted increases in body dissatisfaction, but early menarche, weight-related teasing, and depression did not. There was evidence of 2 distinct pathways to bod

OBJECTIVE: Many transgender adolescents experience clinically elevated anxiety and depression. Testosterone (T), used as a gender affirming treatment, may reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. We assessed the effect of gender affirming T treatment on internalizing symptoms, body image dissatisfaction, and activation patterns within the amygdala-prefrontal cortex circuit in transgender adolescent boys.
METHOD: Symptoms of generalized anxiety, social anxiety, depression, suicidality and body image dissatisfaction were measured by self-report and brain activation was measured during a face

Initial research suggested that only European American women developed eating disorders (Garner, 1993), yet recent studies have shown that African American women do experience them (e.g., Lester & Petrie, 1998b; Mulholland & Mintz, 2001) and also may be negatively affected by similar sociocultural variables. In this study, we examined a sociocultural model of eating disorders for African American women but included the influences of ethnic identity (e.g., Hall, 1995; Helms, 1990). Participants (N = 322) were drawn from 5 different universities. They completed measures representing ethnic ident

OBJECTIVES: This study examined relationships between adolescent girls' body dissatisfaction and disordered eating, quality of same-sex peer relationships and beliefs about thinness in interpersonal relationships, before and after controlling for depression.
DESIGN: Correlations between body image, eating and friendship variables were examined before and after controlling for depressive symptoms. Top and bottom quartiles on symptom variables were identified and analyses of variance, with and without depressive symptoms entered as a covariate, were used to compare scores between groups on frie

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to investigate children's accuracy of reporting body size and gender differences in body size dissatisfaction among preadolescent Australian children.
METHOD: In an Australian partial replication of Dowdney, Woodward, Pickles, and Skuse (International Journal of Eating Disorders, 5, 29-40, 1995), children between 5 and 10 years of age (N = 195) made current and ideal figure choices using the Body Image Perception and Attitude Scale for Children (BIPAS-C), a nonsequentially ordered linear figural scale.
RESULTS: The results are consistent with accurate ident

Studies examining associations between body image and breast self-examination (BSE) have returned mixed findings, but this may be a function of focusing on global body image. Here, we examined the impact of breast size dissatisfaction specifically on BSE and behaviours in relation to breast change detection. A total of 384 British women completed measures of breast size dissatisfaction, body dissatisfaction, BSE frequency, confidence in detecting breast change, and delay in contacting their doctor upon detecting a breast change. Regression analyses indicated that greater breast size dissatisfa

AIM: Body image has been highlighted by young people as a significant concern; however, there is limited research on the impact of appearance ideals and negative body image. The aim was to undertake a national community survey exploring body dissatisfaction and related factors in young Australians.
METHOD: 1550 Australians aged 12-18 (M = 16.02, SD = 1.53) completed an online survey.
RESULTS: One quarter of participants were mostly or completely dissatisfied with how their body looks and 90% reported some level of concern about their body image. Further, participants' feelings about their bo

The Fit Body Scale is a newly developed scale that measures body dissatisfaction with muscularity ideals. It has gender-specific versions, the Female Fit Body Scale (FFITBS) and the Male Fit Body Scale (MFBS). The current study examined the psychometric properties of the Fit Body Scale in Iranian women and men. A total of 667 females and 226 males from the Iranian population completed a battery of tools, including FFITBS, MFBS, Drive for Muscularity Scale (DMS), Eating Attitude Test (EAT-26), Body Appreciation Scale (BAS), and Yale-Brown modified Obsessive-Compulsive Scale for Body Dysmorphic

The association between childhood emotional maltreatment and body dissatisfaction has been widely identified. However, the explanatory mechanisms for this association remain unclear. Guided by the Stress Process Model, the present study tested the potential mediating roles of self-compassion and body surveillance in the associations between emotional maltreatment (i.e., emotional abuse and neglect) and body dissatisfaction. Three-wave, self-report survey data were collected from 668 Chinese young adults (66.8 % female, Mage = 19.96 years old, SD = 1.25) with a 6-month between-wave interval. Re

Immigrant adolescents represent a significant and growing proportion of the population in the United States. Yet, little is known about their experiences of body image distortion. This is particularly concerning given that body image distortion has been identified as a significant and modifiable risk factor for a number of mental illnesses, including depression and eating disorders. This study uses multi-level modeling to examine the associations between immigrant generational status, neighborhood immigrant concentration, sex, body dissatisfaction and risk for body image distortion. Data come

BACKGROUND: Body size overestimation is a fundamental feature in anorexia nervosa (AN). There have been inconclusive findings about the extent to which this feature distinguishes psychopathology and some authors have argued that overestimation may be a function of lower body mass index (BMI).
METHODS: We examine body size estimation accuracy and body dissatisfaction in 74 females with AN and 11 age-matched female controls using two well-established psychophysical procedures.
RESULTS: Participants with AN overestimated their body size more and had greater body dissatisfaction than controls. S

Eating disorders (ED) are associated with a maladaptive body schema and several cognitive biases. This pilot study aimed to investigate the effect of visual stimulation by body images on maladaptive body schema and body dissatisfaction in patients with ED. The rubber hand illusion (RHI) was applied to a sample of 33 women with anorexia or bulimia nervosa and 27 control subjects. The RHI was administered in a novel way using a standard-sized hand that had been distorted in appearance (perceived as unsatisfactory), and it was used before and after an ad hoc priming effect (exposure to thin-body

BACKGROUND: Dissatisfaction with body image in adolescents may be associated with disorders such as anxiety. As studies have reported a high risk of anxiety disorders, especially social anxiety, in people who stutter, the present study aimed to compare body image dissatisfaction in adolescent boys who do and do not stutter and investigate the association between body image dissatisfaction and anxiety in both groups.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study in which 102 adolescent male students aged 15 to 17 years (divided into two groups: 51 who stutter and 51 who do not stutter

Body dissatisfaction in individuals with Gender Incongruence (GI) represents a primary source of suffering. Several studies have highlighted how this suffering has psychological, physical, and biological implications. This work aims to explore experiences related to body dissatisfaction and investigate the issues associated with living in a body perceived as incongruent for individuals with GI. Thirty-six individuals, aged between 18 and 30 years old and at stage T0 of hormone treatment, participated in the study. Body dissatisfaction and experiences related to it were investigated using the C

OBJECTIVE: Body dissatisfaction and depression have consistently demonstrated a positive association in women. This study sought to determine the independence of this association from bulimic symptomatology among women diagnosed with bulimia nervosa.
METHOD: Participants were 101 women who completed a controlled treatment study of bulimia nervosa and participated in follow-up assessments 10 years later.
RESULTS: Findings indicated that baseline levels of depression were independent of and superior to bulimic symptoms in prospectively predicting body dissatisfaction at follow-up assessment.

The present study evaluated the utility of combining measures of body dissatisfaction and borderline personality features in screening high-school girls who may be at risk for bulimia nervosa. Two samples (777 high-school girls and 22 bulimic women in-treatment) completed scales assessing borderline traits, body dissatisfaction, eating symptoms, and associated psychiatric disturbances. Students were divided into four groups, respectively showing: (a) high body dissatisfaction and borderline traits, (b) high body dissatisfaction alone, (c) high borderline traits alone, or (d) neither vulnerabil
