To report a case of epidural lipomatosis in a patient with abnormal adipose tissue distribution, glucose intolerance and mixed hyperlipidemia. A 63-year-old male patient presented with low back pain radiating to the left calf on standing and walking (walking distance <100 m). He weighed 97.5 kg, was 1.73 m tall (BMI 32.6 kg/m2) and had a waist circumference of 113 cm. He had a glucose intolerance after a 75-g glucose oral load test. CT-Myelography revealed voluminous epidural lipomatosis around L4-L5 and L5-S1. Low calorie diet and reduction in alcohol intake achieved a weight loss of 17.5 kg

The aim of this study is to analyze the relationships between obesity, fat distribution and pharyngeal transversal area in women. Cross-sectional areas of the pharynx at the oro-pharyngeal junction and at the glottis and mean pharyngeal area were measured by acoustic pharyngometry in 145 women (age 42.9 +/- 15.1 years; range 14-82 years). Body weight, waist, hip and neck circumferences, and sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD) were determined. Pharyngeal area at the oro-pharyngeal junction, measured both in orthostatic and in lying position, was negatively related to BMI, waist, hip and SAD. Mean

BACKGROUND: The body weight following bariatric surgery is a primary concern for both healthcare professionals and surgical candidates. However, it remains unclear whether variations in preoperative fat distribution influence weight loss outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of abdominal fat distribution on postoperative weight loss and body mass index (BMI) reduction, and to clarify the role of different fat depots in weight loss outcomes.
METHODS: Preoperative data from patients with overweight or obesity, along with their weight records at 1, 2 and 5 years

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction associated with fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is often correlated with obesity and hyperuricemia. The present study aimed to determine the association between serum uric acid (SUA) and central fat distribution in patients with MAFLD.
METHODS: A total of 485 patients were classified into the following groups: (1) controls without MAFLD and hyperuricemia (HUA), (2) MAFLD with normal SUA, and (3) MAFLD with HUA. DUALSCAN HDS-2000 was used to measure visceral fat (VAT) and subcutaneous fat (SAT). Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) was used to measure body fat

Objective: To explore the relationship between liver controlled attenuation parameters (CAP) and body fat mass and its distribution. Methods: From May to December 2018, 978 adult patients visited at the fatty liver center of the Third People's Hospital of Changzhou were treated. The patient's liver controlled attenuation parameters were measured by transient elastography and the body fat mass and its distribution were measured by bioelectrical impedance technology. Pearson's correlation coefficient was adopted to describe the correlation between liver CAP value and body mass index (BMI), body

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether within-individual variation is a factor in the generally reported poor tracking of central body fat distribution (CBFD) during development and whether two measurements of CBFD during each measurement occasion would improve the estimate of tracking over time.
METHODS: A longitudinal study compared the results of two measurements of body fat (BF) and CBFD during each measurement occasion to the results of one measurement of BF and CBFD during each occasion every 4 months over 1-3 y. A total of 345 boys and 333 girls in three age cohorts of 8, 11 and 14 y at bas

The measurement of bone mass, a reliable predictor of osteoporotic fractures, in obese subjects has yielded conflicting results and bone mass has been reported to be elevated, normal or decreased. These observations indicate that factors other than body weight may be involved in the less risk for osteoporosis in obese subjects. In order to clarify the role of body fat distribution on bone density we studied sixty postmenopausal overweight/obese women with Body Mass Index (BMI) over 25 kg/m(2). Thirty five age-matched, nonobese postmenopausal women, served as controls. Bone mineral density (BMD

This report analyzes the association between blood pressure and three indicators of peripheral androgenic activity (PIAAs): body fat distribution, hirsutism, and sebum production. Furthermore, it analyzes the associations among these PIAAs to understand whether they are indicators of the same androgenic pattern. The study was conducted among 314 healthy women, aged 35-69 years, participating in the baseline examination of the Study of Hormones and Diet in the Etiology of Breast Cancer (ORDET), an Italian cohort study of breast cancer. Body fat distribution was measured as the ratio of waist-to

"Conicity" (C) is an index of body fat distribution which expresses an individuals waist circumference relative to the circumference of a cylinder generated with that persons weight and height assuming a constant for body density (Valdez [1991] J. Clin. Epidemiol. 44:955-956). The more central a person is in fat distribution, the higher the value of C. In a pilot study of cardiovascular reactivity and dimensions of anger and hostility in 60 African-, Anglo-, and Hispanic-American adolescents, anthropometry and sexual maturation were determined to assess their mediating influence on the relatio

Secular trends in skinfold thicknesses and body fat distribution were examined in the adult Inuit of Igloolik, N.W.T. through surveys conducted in 1969/70, 1979/80 and 1989/93. Findings were compared with the nGanasan population of Volochanka (Taimir peninsula, Siberia), who were examined in 1992/3. The skinfold readings of the Inuit have increased over the two decades of observation. Currently, the young male Inuit and nGanasan remain relatively thin, but older Inuit men and the women of both populations are now quite obese relative to subjects from Southern Canada. The male Inuit have also d

The relationship of body fat distribution to insulin and the catecholamines, hormones that affect lipolysis differentially by fat site, was examined within an environmental context, including factors of medication use, physical activity, dietary intake, educational attainment, and age. Four cross-sectional body fat areas (cm2) were determined by three computed tomography (CT) scans (subcutaneous chest fat at the level of the nipples, subcutaneous and intra-abdominal fat at the level of the umbilicus, and subcutaneous left mid-thigh fat) in 191 second-generation Japanese-American men aged 45-74

OBJECTIVE: Body fat distribution may be a stronger predictor of metabolic risk than BMI. Yet, few studies have investigated secular changes in body fat distribution in middle-income countries or how those changes vary by socioeconomic status (SES). This study evaluated changes in body fat distribution by SES in Colombia, a middle-income country where BMI is increasing rapidly.
DESIGN: We applied factor analysis to previously published data to assess secular changes in adiposity and body fat distribution in cross-sectional samples of urban Colombian women. Anthropometry was used to assess weig

We investigated the effect of weight loss on fat accumulation in six different tissues and associated metabolic characteristics in individuals with obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and the metabolic syndrome (MetS). Baseline assessments were done for individuals with obesity, NAFLD, and MetS (n=33), individuals with obesity (n=28), and lean individuals (n=27), and at 1 and 5 months for the NAFLD-MetS group during personalized weight loss intervention. All measured fat depots were increased in individuals with obesity compared with lean (p<0.001), whereas pancreas (p=0.024) a

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is a risk factor for both the development of and mortality from breast cancer in postmenopausal but not in premenopausal women. However, which part of the fat mass is associated with risk remains unclear, and whether the difference in the risk for breast cancer is associated with discrepancy in the distribution of fat with menstrual status requires further study.
METHODS: A dataset from the UK Biobank, which included 245,009 female participants and 5,402 females who developed breast cancer during a mean follow-up of 6.6 years, was analyzed. Body fat mass was measured acc
