The human body odor compound androstadienone leads to anger-dependent effects in an emotional Stroop but not dot-probe task using human faces.

The androgen derivative androstadienone is a substance found in human sweat and thus is a putative human chemosignal. Androstadienone has been studied with respect to effects on mood states, attractiveness ratings, physiological and neural activation. With the current experiment, we aimed to explore in which way androstadienone affects attention to social cues (human faces). Moreover, we wanted to test whether effects depend on specific emotions, the participants' sex and individual sensitivity to smell androstadienone. To do so, we investigated 56 healthy individuals (thereof 29 females takin

Advancing frontiers in skin offensive odor management: from innovative diagnostics to cutting-edge treatments and emerging technologies.

Skin bromhidrosis, commonly referred to as body odor, is caused by the microbial breakdown of sweat, leading to the formation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that result in unpleasant odors. While body odor is a natural consequence of sweat production, excessive or persistent odor can significantly affect quality of life, causing social stigma and psychological distress. Traditional approaches to managing body odor, such as antiperspirants and deodorants, have limitations, necessitating the development of more advanced diagnostic tools and treatments. This review aims to explore recent ad

Population level evidence for seasonality of the human microbiome.

The objective of this study is to determine whether human body odors undergo seasonal modulation. We utilized google trends search volume from the United States of America from January 1, 2010 to June 24, 2017 for a number of predetermined body odors. Regression modeling of time series data was completed. Our primary outcome was to determine the proportion of the variability in Internet searches for each unpleasant odor (about the mean) that is explained by a seasonal model. We determined that the seasonal (sinusoidal) model provided a significantly better fit than the null model (best straigh

Children's odor pleasantness ratings may not differ according to pubertal status: Preliminary results from a sample of 11-14-year-old Czech children.

Puberty tends to be viewed as a "turning point" in hedonic perception of body odor (BO)-related smells. The pubertal stage, a potential proxy for the underlying physiological changes, may contribute to variation in odor hedonic perception. Other potential modulators of odor hedonics are general semantic knowledge about odors (which also tends to be subsumed under the term "age") and perceived odor intensity. The present cross-sectional study examined differences in hedonic odor perception across puberty in 205 Czech children aged 11-14 (89 boys). We investigated whether children differ in the

Head Lice Recognize and Prefer Head Odor Over Foot and Forearms Odors.

Human head lice, Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae), are hematophagous parasites that infest human heads. They are extreme host specialists suggesting a strict selection behavior towards the human head by the parasites. Despite the public health relevance of P. humanus capitis, the role of chemical clues to select the human head is not well known. In the present study, we attempted to find out whether head lice recognize and select the odor of the head over the odor of other parts of the human body. Our results using a two-choice olfactometer demonstrated that head l

Scent recognition of infected status in humans.

INTRODUCTION: There is a body of experimental evidence that mice and rats use chemical signals to avoid sexual contact with infected conspecifics. In contrast to animals, body scent of sick humans is employed only in medical diagnostics. A modification of human body odor, due to an infection, has not been studied as a potential signal for choice of a sexual partner. It might, however, be especially important for sexually transmitted infections (STI) because many such infections have no obvious external manifestations. AIM: In this study, we have investigated odor pleasantness of young men inf

A Preliminary Research: Effect of Pleasant and Unpleasant Food Odors on the Health of Mice Through Olfaction.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of different preferences of food-derived odors (common food flavors/spices) on the appetite, immune system, and CNS of mice through 15 days of olfactory exposure. According to the ranking of sniffing duration, beef essence was chosen as a pleasant odor, while garlic essence was chosen as an unpleasant odor. Results showed that food intake and body weight gradually increased in all groups, with the lowest values observed in the garlic odor group. Unpleasant garlic odor suppressed the mRNA transcription levels of agouti-related protein (AgRP) and neurop

Delusional disorder, somatic type: olfactory reference syndrome in a patient with delusional trimethylaminuria.

Delusions of foul body odors (often referred to as olfactory reference syndrome [ORS]) currently fall under the category of delusional disorder, somatic type (DDST), in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV). We present the case of a 51-year-old man with no previous psychiatric history who presented with perceived foul odors that he delusionally attributed to trimethylaminuria (TMAU). TMAU is a rare metabolic disorder associated with foul body odors. The patient also experienced severe concurrent mood symptoms because of social isolation resulting fr

The role of estrogen and progesterone in the control of preputial gland sex attractant odors in the female rat.

Sexually experienced male rats were used to test the attractiveness of body odors of female rats. The attractiveness of these odors varied with the estrous cycle. Odors from female rats in proestrus were the most attractive to male rats and those from female rats during the darkness hours of diestrus the least attractive. The preputial glands appeared to be the source of these odors for the male rats showed no preference for the odors of proestrous female rats that had been preputialectomized. Administration of 1 microgram estrdiol benzoate (EB) for 5 days increased the attractiveness of body

Relationships between pathologic subjective halitosis, olfactory reference syndrome, and social anxiety in young Japanese women.

BACKGROUND: Pathologic subjective halitosis is known as a halitosis complaint without objective confirmation of halitosis by others or by halitometer measurements; it has been reported to be associated with social anxiety disorder. Olfactory reference syndrome is a preoccupation with the false belief that one emits a foul and offensive body odor. Generally, patients with olfactory reference syndrome are concerned with multiple body parts. However, the mouth is known to be the most common source of body odor for those with olfactory reference syndrome, which could imply that the two conditions

Influence of Human Leukocyte Antigen on Olfactory Sexual Attraction in Non-Heterosexual Brazilian Men.

Body odors influence immediate sexual attraction and are affected by a key genetic component of the immune system, the human leukocyte antigen (HLA). This relationship is important because evidence suggests that reproduction with partners who have dissimilar HLA leads to offspring that are more resistant to pathogens. However, research typically focuses on the effect of body odor on partner selection among heterosexual individuals. In this study, we analyzed the influence of HLA on olfactory sexual attraction in non-heterosexual Brazilian men. A total of 40 men (20 non-heterosexual and 20 hete

The neuroendocrinology of sexual attraction.

Sexual attraction has two components: Emission of sexually attractive stimuli and responsiveness to these stimuli. In rodents, olfactory stimuli are necessary but not sufficient for attraction. We argue that body odors are far superior to odors from excreta (urine, feces) as sexual attractants. Body odors are produced by sebaceous glands all over the body surface and in specialized glands. In primates, visual stimuli, for example the sexual skin, are more important than olfactory. The role of gonadal hormones for the production of and responsiveness to odorants is well established. Both the an

A neuronal population clock for interval timing in Drosophila.

Understanding the order and duration of events is fundamental to prediction and anticipation. Here, we show that Drosophila estimate, remember, and reproduce intervals in the range of several seconds. This inner sense of time relies on a population clock in the mushroom bodies. Following an olfactory cue, the Kenyon cell (KC) ensemble generates a continuous representation of time from odor onset to odor offset and beyond, with different neurons responding maximally at characteristic, odor-specific delays. The temporally sparse and dispersed KC responses are combined by mushroom body output neu

Human ovulatory phase-increasing odors cause positive emotions and stress-suppressive effects in males.

In many animals, olfactory cues are key for recognizing their sex, kinship, and reproductive status. In humans, it has been proposed that males find female body odors attractive during the ovulatory phase, coinciding with peak fertility. However, the molecular and physiological foundations of this attractiveness remain unclear. In this study, we combined sensory evaluation with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for chemical analysis and identified volatile compounds that fluctuate across menstrual cycle phases. We identified three ovulatory phase-increasing compounds that mitigate the basal

Sebaceous origins of human odor.

The compounds that make up human body odor have been catalogued by researchers in many fields. Yet few are aware of exactly where these molecules come from. Volatile body-odor compounds are often cited as being produced primarily via microbial activity from precursors in sweat. While this is a source of many human volatiles, here we synthesize data showing that some of the most distinctive and abundant components of human odor instead originate from precursors in sebum, via reactions that do not involve the skin microbiome. We also review the unique biochemistry of human sebaceous glands and d

Human scent guides mosquito thermotaxis and host selection under naturalistic conditions.

The African malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae exhibits a strong innate drive to seek out humans in its sensory environment, classically entering homes to land on human skin in the hours flanking midnight. To gain insight into the role that olfactory cues emanating from the human body play in generating this epidemiologically important behavior, we developed a large-scale multi-choice preference assay in Zambia with infrared motion vision under semi-field conditions. We determined that An. gambiae prefers to land on arrayed visual targets warmed to human skin temperature during the nighttime w

Elements of olfactory intelligence in Drosophila.

The ability to make the world of odorants intelligible is a key capability of the Drosophila olfactory system that we shall call olfactory intelligence. Characterizing the functional logic of the Drosophila early olfactory system that makes the natural world of odorants intelligible is a major challenge in neuroscience. Starting by modeling the space of odorants using constructs of both semantic and syntactic information, we establish that the Antenna Lobe and Mushroom Body Calyx first decompose the confounding representation of the Antenna into a concentration independent odorant semantics in

Randomized, open-label preference study of two cyclosporine capsule formulations (usp modified) in stable solid-organ transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has indicated patient dissatisfaction with the odor, size, and taste of cyclosporine capsules, as well as the halitosis and body odor the capsules can cause. OBJECTIVES: The purposes of this investigation were to (1) compare the overall cyclosporine capsule preference (Gengraf vs Neoral) in stable, solid-organ transplant recipients, (2) assess patient preference based on specific capsule attributes, and (3) determine the reliability of the Cyclosporine Capsule SatiSfaCtion Survey (original to this study). Optical recording of odor-evoked responses in the olfactory brain of the naïve and aversively trained terrestrial snails.

Regular spontaneous oscillations were recorded both electro- and optophysiologically using a voltage-sensitive absorption dye in the olfactory part of the brain (procerebral lobe of the cerebral ganglia) of the gastropod mollusk Helix lucorum. Odor application caused transient changes in procerebral oscillations, and an odor-evoked potential was recorded in the procerebrum (PC). The wave of evoked potential originated near the place of olfactory nerve entrance into the PC and propagated via the procerebral neuropile toward the cell body layer. The spread of the odor-evoked potential correspond

Cyphers and cycles - A chemical basis of the differential attraction of mosquitoes to human odor.

Anthropophilic mosquitoes, such as the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, not only exhibit a robust host preference for humans but are also known to favor certain individuals over others, which has been attributed to variations in individual body odor. The underpinning chemical drivers, however, remain largely unidentified. Here, we assessed the differential attractiveness of 42 female participants to host-seeking Ae. aegypti, demonstrating that pregnancy or menstrual cycle phase significantly contributed to the individual level of attractiveness. Chemical and electrophysiological analyses
