Body size and subcutaneous fat patterning in adolescence.

Factors that influence low birth weight at term may also be associated with subcutaneous fat patterning in later life. This hypothesis was investigated in a comparative (retrospective) cohort study. The subjects, born in Cardiff between 1975 and 1977, were of mean age 15.7 years. Cases (low birth weight (< 2500 g) at term) were matched with controls (normal birth weight (3000-3800 g) at term) for sex, parity, place of birth, date of birth, and gestation. Subscapular skinfold (an index of central subcutaneous fat) and triceps skinfold (an index of peripheral subcutaneous fat) were measured usin

Recipient body size and cadaveric renal allograft survival.

Transplantation of renal allografts inadequate to meet recipient metabolic demands has been hypothesized to be one cause of chronic allograft failure. This cohort study examined the relationship of each of three measures of recipient body size and one measure of recipient metabolic rate to the rate of allograft failure among 239 recipients of cadaveric renal allografts between 1985 and 1990. All subjects were followed until allograft failure, death, or December 31, 1992, whichever occurred first. Using multivariate Cox proportional hazards analysis, all measures of recipient size and metabolic

Blood pressure and body size in precocious puberty.

Blood pressure increases with age in normal children. This increase appears to be related to body size. To assess the role of body size as a determinant of blood pressure in precocious puberty, we compared the blood pressure of 81 children with precocious puberty with the blood pressure standards for normal children from the NHLBI Task Force on Blood Pressure Control in Children. Children with precocious puberty had significantly increased blood pressure for chronologic age (p less than 0.05) but generally appropriate blood pressure for height age or weight age. These data are consistent with

Size matters for lice on birds: Coevolutionary allometry of host and parasite body size.

Body size is one of the most fundamental characteristics of all organisms. It influences physiology, morphology, behavior, and even interspecific interactions such as those between parasites and their hosts. Host body size influences the magnitude and variability of parasite size according to Harrison's rule (HR: positive relationship between host and parasite body sizes) and Poulin's Increasing Variance Hypothesis (PIVH: positive relationship between host body size and the variability of parasite body size). We analyzed parasite-host body size allometry for 581 species of avian lice (∼15% of

Body-size estimation in eating disorders using video distortion on a life-size screen.

BACKGROUND: The video-distortion method on a life-size screen is one of the new methods to systematically study the body experience of eating-disordered patients. METHODS: Using this method, we have studied body-size estimation in female patients suffering from eating disorders: anorexia nervosa restricting type (n = 87) and mixed type (n = 34); bulimia nervosa (n = 44), and a normal control group (n = 45). Subjects had to estimate a neutral object (neutral response) and their own body size: what they think they really look like (cognitive response); what they feel they look like (affective r

Convergence in reduced body size, head size, and blood glucose in three island reptiles.

Many oceanic islands harbor diverse species that differ markedly from their mainland relatives with respect to morphology, behavior, and physiology. A particularly common morphological change exhibited by a wide range of species on islands worldwide involves either a reduction in body size, termed island dwarfism, or an increase in body size, termed island gigantism. While numerous instances of dwarfism and gigantism have been well documented, documentation of other morphological changes on islands remains limited. Furthermore, we lack a basic understanding of the physiological mechanisms that

Males have larger skeletal size and bone mass than females, despite comparable body size.

UNLABELLED: Gender differences in fractures may be related to body size, bone size, geometry, or density. We studied this in 18-year-old males (n = 36) and females (n = 36) matched for height and weight. Despite comparable body size, males have greater BMC and BMD at the hip and distal tibia and greater tibial cortical thickness. This may confer greater skeletal integrity in males. INTRODUCTION: Gender differences in fractures may be related to body size, bone size, geometry, or density. We studied this in males (n = 36) and females (n = 36; mean age = 18 years) pair-matched for height and we

The Effect of Own Body Concerns on Judgments of Other Women's Body Size.

We investigated the relationships between healthy women's estimates of their own body size, their body dissatisfaction, and how they subjectively judge the transition from normal to overweight in other women's bodies (the "normal/overweight" boundary). We propose two complementary hypotheses. In the first, participants compare other women to an internalized Western "thin ideal," whose size reflects the observer's own body dissatisfaction. As dissatisfaction increases, so the size of their "thin ideal" reduces, predicting an inverse relationship between the "normal/overweight" boundary and part

Mastication and rumination in relation to body size of cattle.

Effect of body size on number of minutes per kilogram cell wall constituents spent chewing during eating and ruminating was studied in a total of 59 mature animals including 18 Holstein cows, 12 Jersey cows, 6 Ayrshire cows, 11 Guernsey cows, and 12 steers. Larger animals were more efficient chewers, spending less time chewing per kilogram of ingested cell wall constituents. Body size accounted for 52% and differences of intake of cell wall constituents accounted for an additional 22% of variability of chewing time. Neither breed nor ambient temperature contributed significantly to explaining

[DOES KYPHOPLASTY AFFECT THE SIZE OF THE VERTEBRAL BODY?].

INTRODUCTION: Thoracolumbar compression fractures are common among the osteoporotic aging population, and a commonly accepted surgical treatment is kyphoplasty. AIMS: Our study aims to demonstrate the change in the known radiologic evaluation methods before and after the surgery. METHODS: A retrospective study, 54 patients with compression A1 fractures were included and evaluated for demographic data. Two observers independently collected data from preoperative, intra-operative, and postoperative lateral and AP radiographs. The collected data included middle vertebral height - MVH/U/D, perce

Is risk of testicular cancer related to body size?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The incidence of testicular germ cell tumors (GCT) has been increasing since decades but cohorts of men born during war-time and immediately thereafter had a lower incidence. Based on this epidemiological observation, a hypothesis was generated that postulated nutritional factors in early life to be involved in the pathogenesis of GCT. To support this hypothesis biomarkers for early life nutrition were analyzed. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a case control study, 353 prospectively enrolled patients with GCT and 259 hospital-based controls with bone fractures and with nep

Early evolution of small body size in Homo floresiensis.

Recent discoveries of Homo floresiensis and H. luzonensis raise questions regarding how extreme body size reduction occurred in some extinct Homo species in insular environments. Previous investigations at Mata Menge, Flores Island, Indonesia, suggested that the early Middle Pleistocene ancestors of H. floresiensis had even smaller jaws and teeth. Here, we report additional hominin fossils from the same deposits at Mata Menge. An adult humerus is estimated to be 9 - 16% shorter and thinner than the type specimen of H. floresiensis dated to ~60,000 years ago, and is smaller than any other Plio-

Young women, body size and risk of atrial fibrillation.

UNLABELLED: Background A large body size in early adult life has been associated with an increased risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) later in life in men; however, this has not yet been investigated in women. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: We included all women in the Swedish Medical Birth Registry with known weight and height from 1982 to 2014. The main exposure body surface area (BSA) was calculated as the square root of (height [cm]  ×  weight [kg]/3600). Information on hospital diagnoses of AF were obtained from the Patient Registry. The study population comprised 1,522,329 wo

Mouse patched1 controls body size determination and limb patterning.

Hedgehog (Hh) proteins control many developmental events by inducing specific cell fates or regulating cell proliferation. The Patched1 (Ptc1) protein, a binding protein for Hh molecules, appears to oppose Hh signals by repressing transcription of genes that can be activated by Hh. Sonic hedgehog (Shh), one of the vertebrate homologs of Hh, controls patterning and growth of the limb but the early embryonic lethality of ptc1(-)(/)(-) mice obscures the roles of ptc1 in later stages of development. We partially rescued ptc1 homozygous mutant embryos using a metallothionein promoter driving ptc1.

Forage ingestion: effects of sward characteristics and body size.

A model of a grazing ruminant in a range environment integrates ingestive behaviors (bite size, chewing rate, movement rate) and processing behaviors (mastication and rumination requirements) with rumen function to predict the combination of behaviors that produces the highest rate of energy digestion per unit of time (DE/T). Ingestive and processing behaviors compensate to maintain DE/T as the environment changes. Compensation for a change in forage density is more complete than for a change in forage quality. Ingestive behaviors alone have limited ability to offset environment changes, and c

Traip controls mushroom body size by suppressing mitotic defects.

Microcephaly is a failure to develop proper brain size and neuron number. Mutations in diverse genes are linked to microcephaly, including several with DNA damage repair (DDR) functions; however, it is not well understood how these DDR gene mutations limit brain size. One such gene is TRAIP, which has multiple functions in DDR. We characterized the Drosophila TRAIP homolog nopo, hereafter traip, and found that traip mutants (traip-) have a brain-specific defect in the mushroom body (MB). traip- MBs were smaller and contained fewer neurons, but no neurodegeneration, consistent with human primar

Body size impacts critical thermal maximum measurements in lizards.

Understanding the mechanisms behind critical thermal maxima (CTmax; the high body temperature at which neuromuscular coordination is lost) of organisms is central to understanding ectotherm thermal tolerance. Body size is an often overlooked variable that may affect interpretation of CTmax, and consequently, how CTmax is used to evaluate mechanistic hypotheses of thermal tolerance. We tested the hypothesis that body size affects CTmax and its interpretation in two experimental contexts. First, in four Sceloporus species, we examined how inter- and intraspecific variation in body size affected

Impact of sleep disordered breathing on carotid body size.

We tested the hypotheses that: (1) carotid body size can be measured by computed tomographic angiography (CTA) with high inter-observer agreement, and (2) patients with sleep apnea exhibit larger carotid bodies than those without sleep apnea. A chart review was conducted from patients who underwent neck CTA and polysomnography at the Mayo Clinic between January 2000 and February 2015. Widest axial measurements of the carotid bodies, performed independently by two radiologists, were possible in 81% of patients. Intra-class correlation coefficients ranged from 0.93 to 0.95 (Right carotid body: 0
