Effect of body temperature on salicylate-induced hyperventilation.

Hyperventilation and hyperpyrexia occur simultaneously during acute salicylate intoxication. The present experiments were designed to investigate the stimulatory effect of increased body temperature on respiration in this pathological state. Acute salicylate intoxication was produced in mongrel dogs by intravenous infusion of 200 mg sodium salicylate/kg body weight, and the effect of body temperature on salicylate-induced hyperventilation was studied by comparing the respiration of hyperthermic animals with the respiration of animals maintained normothermic during acute salicylate intoxication

Management of Body Temperature via the Respiratory Tract.

Hypothermia, defined as a core body temperature ≤35°C, significantly increases morbidity and mortality in mechanically ventilated patients across numerous care settings. Physiologically, the upper airway conditions inspired gases to body temperature and humidity, minimizing heat energy loss and preventing mucosal damage. Instrumentation, such as endotracheal intubation, bypasses this natural mechanism, leading to considerable heat and moisture loss, potentially exacerbating hypothermia risks in critically ill patients. Active humidifiers and heat and moisture exchangers represent common strate

Body temperature regulates glucose metabolism and torpid behavior.

Glucose is a significant energy resource for maintaining physiological activities, including body temperature homeostasis, and glucose homeostasis is tightly regulated in mammals. Although ambient temperature tunes glucose metabolism to maintain euthermia, the significance of body temperature in metabolic regulation remains unclear owing to strict thermoregulation. Activation of Qrfp neurons in the preoptic area induced a harmless hypothermic state known as Q-neuron-induced hypothermia and hypometabolism (QIH), which is suitable for studying glucose metabolism under hypothermia. In this study,

Effects of adrenoceptor blocking agents on body temperature.

1. The effect on rectal temperature of adrenoceptor blocking agents, injected through a cannula chronically implanted into a lateral cerebral ventricle, was examined in unanaesthetized rabbits, cats and rats, kept at room temperature (19-22 degrees C).2. In rabbits, the alpha-adrenoceptor blocking agent phenoxybenzamine (50 or 100 mug) produced marked hypothermia when injected intraventricularly but not when injected intravenously. In some rabbits as little as 1 mug was effective on intraventricular injection. Phentolamine and ergotamine, the other alpha-adrenoceptor blocking agents examined,

Core body temperature control by total liquid ventilation using a virtual lung temperature sensor.

In total liquid ventilation (TLV), the lungs are filled with a breathable liquid perfluorocarbon (PFC) while a liquid ventilator ensures proper gas exchange by renewal of a tidal volume of oxygenated and temperature-controlled PFC. Given the rapid changes in core body temperature generated by TLV using the lung has a heat exchanger, it is crucial to have accurate and reliable core body temperature monitoring and control. This study presents the design of a virtual lung temperature sensor to control core temperature. In the first step, the virtual sensor, using expired PFC to estimate lung temp

Relationship Between Rectal Temperature and Infrared Temperatures of a Goat's External Body Surfaces.

Measuring rectal temperature is a common method for assessing the body temperature in animals in response to changes in physiology, health, and emotions. However, non-invasive infrared thermography is a more advanced technique that reduces the stress associated with restraining animals and minimises risks related to cross-contamination and disease transmission. The present study investigated the association between rectal temperature (RT) and infrared temperature (IRT) of the goat's external body surfaces. A total of one hundred thirteen (113) goats were considered for this study, and those th

Assessment of the use of temperature-sensitive microchips to determine core body temperature in goats.

Body temperature was measured at five different body sites (retroperitoneum, groin, semimembranosus muscle, flank and shoulder) using temperature-sensitive microchips implanted in five female goats, and compared with the core body and rectal temperatures. Body temperature was measured while the goats were kept in different ambient temperatures, with and without radiant heat, as well as during a fever induced experimentally by injection of bacterial lipopolysaccharide. Bland-Altman limit of agreement analysis was used to compare the temperature measurements at the different body sites during th

Effects of body temperature on chemosensory activity of the cat carotid body in situ.

The effects of changes in body core temperature (TB) upon the frequency of chemosensory discharges (fx) from one carotid nerve were studied in pentobarbitone anesthetized cats. Raising TB from 35 to 40 degrees C increased fx in some cats, an effect more commonly seen after contralateral carotid neurotomy. In other animals, the simultaneously increased alveolar ventilation counteracted the above effect. A multiple correlation analysis of global data showed predicted increases in fx in response to raising TB at different CO2 levels.

Body Temperature Regulation in the Rat by Muscle Tone.

AIM: We have previously described an important role of skeletal muscle tone in body temperature regulation, muscle tone defined as the tonic motor unit activity recorded between movements. Here, we study muscle tone in an extensive sample of new muscles outside (external muscles) and inside (internal muscles) the body core. METHODS: Skeletal muscles of adult, male Wistar rats were chronically implanted with EMG electrodes, and EMG was recorded during exposures to changes in ambient temperatures between 30°C and 5°C. Every consecutive period between movements (M) was identified as one of rest

Body temperatures of selected amphibian and reptile species.

Ectothermic vertebrates are a diverse group of animals that rely on external sources to maintain a preferred body temperature. Amphibians and reptiles have a preferred optimal temperature zone that allows for optimal biological function. Physiologic processes in ectotherms are influenced by temperature; these animals have capabilities in which they make use of behavioral and physiologic mechanisms to thermoregulate. Core body, ambient air, body surface, and surface/water temperatures were obtained from six ectothermic species including one anuran, two snakes, two turtles, and one alligator. Cl

Exercise and the circadian variation in body temperature measures.

This study examined the existence of circadian rhythms in rectal temperature (Tr) and selected skin temperatures at rest and during light (82 W) and medium (147 W) exercise on a cycle ergometer. Each intensity was sustained for 5 min and then followed by a graded exercise test to exhaustion. The Tr and skin temperatures were also measured on cessation of exercise and 4 min post-exercise. Fifteen males participated, measurements covering six interspersed times of day. The mean exercise time to exhaustion of 19.83 min was independent of the time of day and caused a constant rise of 0.7 degree C

Effect of body temperature on ventilatory control in the alligator.

Pulmonary ventilation and arterial blood acid-base balance were measured in six unanesthetized alligators, Alligator mississipiensis, at 15, 25, and 35 degree C. The animals exhibited pronounced ventilatory responses to hypercapnia at all temperatures studied. Arterial PCO2 increased and pH decreased with increases in body temperature during both normocapnia and hypercapnia. The fractional dissociation of imidazole (alpha Pr) remained constant with changes in body temperature during normocapnia, but increased with temperature during hypercapnia. Ventilatory sensitivity, defined as delta (VE/VO

Continuous body temperature as a window into adolescent development.

Continuous body temperature is a rich source of information on hormonal status, biological rhythms, and metabolism, all of which undergo stereotyped change across adolescence. Due to the direct actions of these dynamic systems on body temperature regulation, continuous temperature may be uniquely suited to monitoring adolescent development and the impacts of exogenous reproductive hormones or peptides (e.g., hormonal contraception, puberty blockers, gender affirming hormone treatment). This mini-review outlines how traditional methods for monitoring the timing and tempo of puberty may be augme

Blowing Hot and Cold: Body Temperature and the Microbiome.

The intestinal microbiome influences host health, and its responsiveness to diet and disease is increasingly well studied. However, our understanding of the factors driving microbiome variation remain limited. Temperature is a core factor that controls microbial growth, but its impact on the microbiome remains to be fully explored. Although commonly assumed to be a constant 37°C, normal body temperatures vary across the animal kingdom, while individual body temperature is affected by multiple factors, including circadian rhythm, age, environmental temperature stress, and immune activation.
