Association of extracellular water/total body water ratio with protein-energy wasting and mortality in patients on hemodialysis.

Bioimpedance analysis-assessed extracellular water/total body water (ECW/TBW) ratio may be a marker for mortality and poor nutritional status in hemodialysis patients. In 193 maintenance hemodialysis patients, we retrospectively investigated the relationships among ECW/TBW ratio, mortality, and protein-energy wasting (PEW). Four components-body mass index, normalized protein catabolic rate, normalized serum creatinine level, and serum albumin level-constitute the simple PEW score; this score was calculated based on the positive number of items concerning malnutrition among these four component

Integrated Physioecological Adaptation of Apodemus chevrieri to Water Deprivation: Synergistic Responses in Body Mass Regulation and Water Metabolism.

As global climate change intensifies, increasing drought in Southwest China may impose strong water stress on small mammals in the Hengduan Mountains. Apodemus chevrieri is endemic to this region, but its integrated responses to water restriction remain unclear. Here, we compared control and water-stressed individuals and quantified changes in body mass, food intake, body temperature (T b), metabolic traits, evaporative water loss (EWL), metabolic water production relative to EWL (MWP/EWL), and visceral and digestive-tract morphology. Water restriction reduced body mass, food intake, core T b,

Many-body interactions resolve halide distribution at the air/water interface.

Whether dissolved ions approach or avoid the air/water interface remains unsettled, despite its importance for atmospheric and interfacial chemistry. Here we show, using chemically accurate data-driven many-body models and a controlled hierarchy of interaction descriptions, that the intrinsic surface propensity of halide ions depends critically on short-range many-body interactions beyond classical polarization. A conventional polarizable model predicts strong iodide adsorption and weaker stabilization of bromide and chloride. When short-range two- and three-body quantum-mechanical interaction

In-Water Fish Body-Length Measurement System Based on Stereo Vision.

Fish body length is an essential monitoring parameter in aquaculture engineering. However, traditional manual measurement methods have been found to be inefficient and harmful to fish. To overcome these shortcomings, this paper proposes a non-contact measurement method that utilizes binocular stereo vision to accurately measure the body length of fish underwater. Binocular cameras capture RGB and depth images to acquire the RGB-D data of the fish, and then the RGB images are selectively segmented using the contrast-adaptive Grab Cut algorithm. To determine the state of the fish, a skeleton ext

CFTR genotype-related body water and electrolyte balance during a marathon.

The aim of this investigation was to determine the influence of CFTR genotype on body water and electrolyte balance during a marathon. Fifty-one experienced runners completed a marathon race. Before and after the race, body mass and a sample of venous blood were obtained. During the race, sweat samples were collected using sweat patches, and fluid and electrolyte intake were obtained using self-reported questionnaires. Thirty-eight participants (74.5% of the total) were 7T/7T homozygotes, 11 (21.6%) were 7T/9T heterozygotes, and one participant presented the rare genotype 5T/7T. Another partic

Nutritional aspects of body water dislocations in postoperative and depleted patients.

Measurements of plasma volume with 125I human serum albumin, extracellular water (ECW) with 82Br-minus, and total body water (TBW) with 3-H2O were made on 16 postoperative patients, 15 depleted patients, and three control subjects. Intracellular water (ICW) was calculated as the difference between TBW and ECW. The observed findings for the series as a whole showed no change in blood volume, an increase of 3.7 I in ECW, and a decrease of 1.5 I in ICW as compared to predicted values based on current weight. Compared to predicted values based on normal (pre-illness) weight, the observed body weig

The ratio of extracellular water to total body water serves as a potential predictor of diabetic peripheral neuropathy in patients.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), a common chronic complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), lacks simple biomarkers for early monitoring. This study aimed to explore the association between the ratio of extracellular water to total body water (ECW/TBW) and DPN. METHODS: A total of 707 T2DM patients recruited from the Third Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University were included in this cross-sectional study. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the association between the ECW/TBW ratio and DPN after adjusting. Receiver operating characteri

Isotope Dilution for Measuring Total Energy Expenditure, Water Turnover, and Total Body Water in Athletes: A Systematic Review.

Isotope-based tracer methods allow the determination of total energy expenditure (TEE), water turnover (rH2O), and total body water (TBW) in free-living conditions. These methods have exciting applications in athletes. However, the limited number of available measurements constrains their applicability. The aim was to describe the application of isotope dilution techniques for measuring TEE, rH2O, and TBW in athletic populations. A comprehensive search (https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/7932T) was performed in three databases: PubMed, EBSCO (CINAHL, MEDLINE, and SPORTDiscus), and Cochrane Librar

Complete System to Generate Clean Water from a Contaminated Water Body by a Handmade Flower-like Light Absorber.

The utilization of solar energy to make human lives better has been one of the primary and green approaches adopted by ordinary people and researchers for decades. This approach has recently gained a lot of attention as a way to tackle clean water scarcity in remote areas. Costly components, complex manufacturing procedures with rarely available equipment, and a surface to condense water vapors are challenges in the way of its application in the required areas. Here, we propose a complete system to solve this problem with a handmade light absorber and a superhydrophilic surface (antifogging) t

[Change of total body water dependent on age and nutritional status].

Introduction: A healthy fluid balance is necessary to maintain normal vital functions. Detecting the amount of body water is important both in clinical practice and in sports in assessing dehydration and/or fluid overload. Among the methods used to determine the amount and distribution of body water, devices operating on the principle of bioelectrical impedance are becoming more common. Their use is simple, fast and the results obtained are reliable. Objective: The aim of our study was to determine the relative body water content changing dependent on age in men and women of normal weight, ove

"Mind, body, and water!" - Postherpetic polydipsia masquerading as obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Polydipsia has always been an intriguing entity in clinical psychiatry, since long. Other than being commonly associated with patients of chronic schizophrenia, as described in past, it can also mimic and present in other psychiatric disorders; and thus may be elusive for diagnosis and treatment. Here we describe a patient having polydipsia with prominent obsessive compulsive symptoms, which, after detailed investigations, was found to be secondary to herpes encephalitis. The organic nature of the illness was ascertained by distinct signal changes in right uncus, hippocampus and cingulate cort

Increased salt consumption induces body water conservation and decreases fluid intake.

BACKGROUND: The idea that increasing salt intake increases drinking and urine volume is widely accepted. We tested the hypothesis that an increase in salt intake of 6 g/d would change fluid balance in men living under ultra-long-term controlled conditions. METHODS: Over the course of 2 separate space flight simulation studies of 105 and 205 days' duration, we exposed 10 healthy men to 3 salt intake levels (12, 9, or 6 g/d). All other nutrients were maintained constant. We studied the effect of salt-driven changes in mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid urinary excretion on day-to-day osmolyte

Hypothalamic cholinergic regulation of body temperature and water intake in rats.

Without disturbing the behavior of unanesthetized rats, the perfusion of neostigmine through microdialysis probe into the anterior hypothalamus (AH), paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and lateral ventricle (LV) decreased body temperature and increased water intake. On the other hand, the perfusion into the supraoptic nucleus (SON) increased the body temperature. The perfusion of neostigmine increased the extracellular concentration of acetylcholine in the perfusion sites except LV. Changes, both decrease and increase, in body temperature and increase in water intake were correlated with increases

Renal compensation for body water loss during dehydration in neonatal rats.

The present study was designed to investigate whether the limited capacity for concentrating urine in neonatal rats is associated with an immature ability to regulate serum osmolality. During milk deprivation, the percent of reduction in body weight per 10 h (mean +/- SE) was 4.3 +/- 0.2, 3.7 +/- 0.1, 4.8 +/- 0.2, and 6.0 +/- 0.1% in 4-, 7-, 10-, and 14-d-old rats, respectively (n = 23-24, each age). The osmolality of urine increased to 718 +/- 12 (4 d), 741 +/- 28 (7 d), 792 +/- 20 (10 d), and 1,203 +/- 41 mosmol/kg H2O (14 d). Free-water absorption (TcH2O) promptly increased after deprivatio

Total body water content of neonates with obstruction of alimentary tract.

The total body water content was measured by the deuterium oxide dilution method in 55 neonates admitted to hospital for surgical treatment within 90 hours of birth. The mean total body water of the whole group was 77·03 ± 0·62 (SEM)% of the body weight (range 67·4 to 88·6%), or 1·974 ± 0·005 (SEM) litres (range 1·010 to 2·830 litres). Over a range of body weights from 1·160 to 3·851 kg, total body water content expressed as a percentage of body weight decreased by 5% per kg rise in body weight, but when expressed as litres per kg body weight it increased by 737 ml for each rise of 1 kg in bod

Veterinary Forensic Pathology: Drowning and Bodies Recovered From Water.

Determining the cause of death in animals recovered from bodies of water, swimming pools, or other water-containing vessels is challenging. Animals recovered from water may or may not have drowned. The diagnosis of drowning is usually one of exclusion, requiring information from the crime scene, recovery scene, the medical history or reliable witness accounts. While there are characteristic macroscopic and microscopic lesions of drowning, none are specific and are dependent on the volume and tonicity of the drowning medium. Beyond interpreting the postmortem findings, the court may ask patholo

What is the incidence and significance of "dry-lungs" in bodies found in water?

BACKGROUND: Drowning without aspiration of liquid, generally attributed to death from asphyxia while submerged and in laryngospasm, has been reported to occur in approximately 10% to 15% of drowning victims. OBJECTIVES: The occurrence of "dry-drowning" recently has been questioned and the hypothesis developed that "dry-lungs" in bodies found dead in the water could conceal more natural deaths than previously recognized. METHODS: Based on 578 selected adult victims who presumably drowned, we analyzed the correlation between the cases with a low combined lung/pleura liquid weight (< 1000 g and
