Surgery for obesity and related diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery2026eng
BACKGROUND: Intragastric balloon (IGB) therapy is a minimally invasive intervention for weight management. However, maintenance after balloon removal and predictors of sustained weight loss at 1year remain uncertain.
METHODS: This retrospective single-center study included patients who underwent fluid-filled IGB placement between January 2015 and December 2019 at Istishari Teaching Hospital, Amman, Jordan. Inclusion criteria were age ≥13 years and IGB insertion for weight control. Balloons were endoscopically placed and removed at 6 months per standard protocol. No concurrent weight loss inte

PURPOSE: To synthesize evidence regarding the association between interpregnancy weight change (IPWC) in consecutive pregnancies and neonatal or infant outcomes in the subsequent pregnancy.
METHODS: Search strategy was implemented in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus and Cochrane Library from their inception to 13 November 2023. The most adjusted odds ratio (OR) or risk ratio estimates provided by original studies were used to calculate pooled risk ratios and their corresponding 95 % confidence intervals (CI) with the DerSimonian and Laird random effects method. Energy intake during the weight gain phase and the weight maintenance phase was examined in three groups of inpatients: 64 anorectic restrictors (AN-R), 37 anorectic bulimics (AN-B), and 74 normal-weight bulimics (BN). The influence of body composition and other variables such as weight, exercise, and bingeing and purging frequencies on energy intake was analyzed. Eating disorder subgroups were found to differ in energy intakes to gain weight and to maintain weight within a target weight range. Anorectic restrictors consumed significantly more energy to gain weight than did the anorectic bulim

Background: Obesity is a multifactorial chronic disease associated with increased risk of metabolic disorders, reduced quality of life, and rising healthcare costs. Although weight reduction is achievable through various dietary approaches, maintaining the achieved results remains a major clinical challenge. This review aims to identify and discuss dietary, behavioral, and lifestyle strategies that support long-term weight loss and weight maintenance. Methods: A narrative literature review was conducted in two stages using PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The search included peer-reviewed s

Achieving and maintaining weight loss are challenging and require sustained lifestyle changes. This study examined which behavior change techniques (BCTs) support long-term weight outcomes among adults with overweight or obesity. We synthesized evidence from randomized controlled trials of behavioral interventions versus control or alternative interventions, focusing on nonclinical adults (BMI > 25) with ≥ 6-month follow-up, published between 2010 and 2025, that reported weight outcomes. Sixty-five studies (approximately 10,000 participants) evaluating 87 behavioral interventions targeting phy

BACKGROUND: As the prevalence of obesity increases, the number of patients seeking body contouring procedures after bariatric surgery for massive weight loss is increasing. Although the positive impact of bariatric surgery on physical and emotional health is well-described, few studies have reported on the psychosocial well-being of patients undergoing body contouring procedures. Psychosocial well-being can impact patient satisfaction and maintenance of weight loss, and is an important area to study.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to characterize social and psychiatric factors of patien

BACKGROUND: The gut derived anorexigenic hormone neurotensin (NT) is upregulated after bariatric surgery which may contribute to the sustained weight loss. In contrast, diet-induced weight loss is most often followed by weight regain. We therefore investigated whether diet-induced weight loss impacts levels of circulating NT in mice and humans and whether NT levels predicts body weight change after weight loss in humans.
METHODS: In vivo mice study: Obese mice were fed ad-libitum or a restricted diet (40-60 % of average food intake) for 9 days to obtain similar weight loss as observed in the

Echinocandins like anidulafungin are first-line therapies for candidemia and invasive candidiasis, but their dosing may be suboptimal in obese patients. Our objective was to quantify anidulafungin exposure in a cohort of adults across a wide body size range to test if body size affects anidulafungin pharmacokinetics (PK). We enrolled 20 adults between the ages of 18 and 80 years, with an equal distribution of patients above and below a body mass index of 30 kg/m2. A single 100-mg dose of anidulafungin was administered, followed by intensive sampling over 72 h. Population PK analysis was used t

In a recently published study, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of intravenous sotalol in pediatric patients with incessant tachyarrhythmias and we have found that intravenous sotalol is effective and safe. Our dosing regimen was based on the body weight of the patients. In the US, the recommendation for intravenous sotalol dosing in pediatric patients is based on body surface area (BSA) while taking into consideration the patients' age. The purpose of this paper is to show the correspondence of a body weight-based dosing regimen when expressed for BSA as mg/m2. We evaluated the similarity

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the roles of frequency and consistency of self-weighing in promoting weight-loss maintenance.
METHODS: Participants were 74 adults who completed a 3-month internet-based weight-loss program followed by a 9-month no-intervention maintenance period. Frequency of self-weighing was defined as the number of days that participants self-weighed during the maintenance period via a study-provided smart scale. Consistency was defined as the number of weeks that participants self-weighed at a certain frequency, with multiple minimum thresholds examined. Hierarc

BACKGROUND & AIMS: To explore enteropancreatic hormone changes during isocaloric-restricted dietary interventions and their impact on post-intervention weight maintenance.
METHODS: 253 individuals with overweight/obesity and prediabetes were randomly assigned to 25% isocaloric-restricted diets: Control diet, Traditional Jiangnan diet or Mediterranean diet. Serum hormones and clinical indices were evaluated at 0, 3 and 6 months. Body weight values were collected again 6 months after completing interventions.
RESULTS: We observed decreased fasting and post-glucose load levels of glucagon, amyl

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Maintenance of weight loss is a major challenge. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) could provide biofeedback to support lifestyle changes to facilitate weight maintenance. This randomised controlled trial evaluated the feasibility of incorporating CGM into a personalised, dietitian-led, weight loss maintenance programme (PWM), and whether CGM use led to greater improvements in dietary intake, physical activity, body weight, body composition, and cardiometabolic risk biomarkers over 24 weeks.
METHODS: Adults who lost >5 kg bodyweight in the past six months were eligible.

Background/Objectives: Limited information exists on how dietary patterns change in adults who experience weight regain vs. those who maintain weight loss after lifestyle interventions. Methods: Five hundred fifty-two adults (60 ± 1.0 years, 33.8 ± 0.4 kg/m2) with type 2 diabetes mellitus from the Look AHEAD Trial achieved ≥ 7% weight loss after Year 1, completed follow-up visits through Year 4, and provided three 134-item food frequency questionnaires. Weight "regain" (WLR) was defined as regaining ≥ 50% of the initial weight lost. Dietary patterns were determined using established DASH diet

BACKGROUND: Reproduction has been identified as an important factor for long-term weight gain among women. A previous efficacy trial has successfully produced postpartum weight loss; however, the effectiveness of this intervention needs to be established.
OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to evaluate the short- and long-term effectiveness of a diet behavior modification treatment to produce weight loss in postpartum women within the primary health care setting in Sweden.
DESIGN: During 2011-2014, 110 women with a self-reported body mass index (BMI; in kg/m(2)) of ≥27 at 6-15 wk postpartum w

PURPOSE: A previous dose-ranging study of foscarnet maintenance therapy for cytomegalovirus retinopathy showed a positive relationship between dose and survival but could not confirm a relationship between dose and time to first progression. This retrospective analysis of data from that study was undertaken to determine whether there was a relationship between dose and progression rates, which reflects the amount of retina destroyed when progression occurs.
METHODS: Patients were randomly given one of two foscarnet maintenance therapy doses (90 mg/kg of body weight/day [FOS-90 group] or 120 m

With a prevalence of 24 %, obesity is a frequent disease in the general population in Germany. Obesity requires an effective prevention and treatment, mainly because it significantly increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular, orthopaedic, psychologic and other disorders. The indication for the treatment of obesity is based on BMI and body fat distribution, but also includes considerations based on comorbidities. Main treatment goals include body weight reduction and weight maintenance after weight loss. To achieve these goals, a conservative treatment strategy is primari

In this article, we report two cases from our study in which we investigated the effect of a very low-energy diet (VLED) for 9 weeks followed by a weight maintenance program for a total duration of 1 year in obese men with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea. The first case was a 43-year-old man with a body weight of 126 kg and a body mass index (BMI) of 38.8 kg/m(2) at baseline. Over the 1-year treatment program he lost 26% of his initial weight and his apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) was improved by 60%. The second case was at baseline a 54-year-old man with a weight of 87 kg and BMI of 32

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Preliminary studies have reported an association between poor long-term outcome and lower total body fat percentage in weight-restored inpatients treated for anorexia nervosa (AN). A possible link between poor long-term outcome and higher trunk fat percentage has also been hypothesized. The aim was to assess the association between percentage and distribution of body fat at inpatient discharge and the maintenance of normal weight at 1-year follow-up in a sample of weight-restored females with AN.
SUBJECTS/METHODS: Fifty-four short-term weight-restored (body mass index (

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) facilitate weight loss. Weight regain off therapy is concerning. We reported the case of a 35-year-old male prescribed oral semaglutide with 22.7 kg weight loss over 120 days. Herein, we describe the clinical course when discontinuing GLP-1 RA therapy, one approach to maintaining weight loss after discontinuation, and a possible new side effect. At day 120, we continued oral semaglutide 7 mg daily, down from 14 mg, for weight maintenance with subsequent weight regain. We re-increased semaglutide to 14 mg/day with weight re-loss within 1 mon

Background: Women diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) substantially modify their diets during pregnancy to control hyperglycemia. These changes could also affect maternal weight management. Materials and Methods: From July 2014 to December 2015 we enrolled women with and without GDM in a prospective cohort study to compare their mean rates of (1) weight gain before GDM screening, (2) weight gain after GDM screening, and (3) postpartum weight loss. All GDM-affected women were referred to Medical Nutrition Therapy and asked to self-monitor blood glucose until delivery. Rate compar
