Journal of clinical densitometry : the official journal of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry2018eng
The objective of our study was to identify differences in bone mineral density (BMD) according to different sports among adolescents, as well as to identify assessments of relevant mediators. The sample consisted of 429 adolescents with a mean age of 13.3 ± 1.7 yr. The sports modalities that we evaluated were judo, karate, kung fu, swimming, basketball, and soccer. Nonsports group was composed of 111 adolescents. Bone density was assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Regarding BMD values, female engaged in karate had higher BMD values than girls from the no sports group (p = 0.01).

Evidence shows that pregnancy and lactation lead to the decrease of bone mineral density (BMD), which is related to mobilization of skeletal calcium. Numeorous mechanisms are involved in maternal adaptation to the increased demand for calcium. BMD has been proved to return to the baseline level after weaning. Pregnancies and long or repeated periods of feeding do not seem to determine the diagnosis of osteoporosis in later life. In fact, women with multiple pregnancies have been shown to have the same or higher BMD and lower fracture risk compared with nulliparous women. Pregnancy and lactatio

Lithium salts are widely used in treating psychiatric patients. Lithium may be associated with hyperparathyroidism, a risk factor for osteoporosis. However, the data on the effect of lithium on bone mass are conflicting. We assessed bone mineral density with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at the hip and lumbar spine in 75 lithium treated outpatients and 75 normal subjects matched for age, sex and body mass index. Serum total calcium, intact parathyroid hormone (PTH), estradiol, osteocalcin, total alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and C-telopeptide (CTX) in addition to fasting urinary calcium excret

OBJECTIVE: To review the evidence and provide an approach to management of low bone density among premenopausal women. QUALITY OF EVIDENCE MEDLINE: was searched from January 1990 to November 2004 and articles graded by level of evidence (I to III). Diagnosis and management recommendations were based on evidence from randomized controlled trials and expert consensus.
MAIN MESSAGE: Bone mineral density (BMD) testing among premenopausal women should be completed only in the presence of approved indications. Current evidence does not support screening for osteoporosis among premenopausal women. L

The diagnosis of osteoporosis and monitoring of treatment is a challenge for physicians due to the large number of available tests and complexities of interpretation. Bone mineral density (BMD) testing is a non-invasive measurement to assess skeletal health. The "gold-standard" technology for diagnosis and monitoring is dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the spine, hip, or forearm. Fracture risk can be predicted using DXA and other technologies at many skeletal sites. Despite guidelines for selecting patients for BMD testing and identifying those most likely to benefit from treatment, m

PURPOSE: There has been considerable debate about the potential relationship between the use of statin lipid-lowering drugs and fracture risk; several observational studies suggest a protective effect but no randomized controlled trials have confirmed such a benefit. Because statins are given preferentially to persons with hyperlipidemia, if lipid levels were associated with bone mineral density, this could explain the discrepancy between epidemiological observations and randomized controlled trials. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between lipid levels and bone mineral de

It is of interest that in the general population, low bone mass is associated with a higher mortality rate due to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. In addition, the degree of aortic calcification is closely related with a lower bone mineral density (BMD). These results suggest that a low BMD may predict increased arterial stiffness. In ESRD patients, advanced arterial stiffness and low BMD due to renal osteodystrophy are not uncommon. Moreover, the initiation and progression of arterial stiffness and bone loss are accelerated by the same factors such as hyperphosphatemia secondary to chr

Bone mineral density (BMD) measurements have been the single greatest advancement for osteoporosis. BMD measurements have helped define a prefracture diagnosis of osteoporosis, predict fracture risk in postmenopausal women and elderly men, and monitor the course of disease processes that negatively affect bone or therapeutic agents that can improve bone strength. Despite the large amount of clinical, epidemiologic, and basic science data that has advanced our understanding of BMD performance and interpretation, many pitfalls in BMD performance and interpretation pervade the practice of bone de

Renal osteodystrophy can be classified into several disorders, which is now major problem in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Most of studies reported that the bone mineral density of HD patients decreased, but there exist the differences depending on many factors such as sex, bone site, years of HD, the type of disorders. The clinical usefulness of bone densitometry has been evaluated in many studies.

Multiple vertebral fractures in men can be seen in younger age compared to in women. Also, mortality is higher in men for the case with fracture than in women. Diagnostic criteria with dual x-ray absorptiometry in men is as follows:osteoporosis-less than 70% of young adult mean (YAM), osteopenia- more than 70% and less than 80% of YAM, which is same as diagnostic criteria for women. However, diagnostic criteria for quantitative ultrasound has not been yet established for men. Age, hypogonadism are one of the strong risk factors for low bone mineral density. Although life style such as smoking

With the development of improved diagnostic and treatment options, reduced bone mineral density in children is receiving increased attention. The etiology of osteopenia in healthy children is multifactorial and incompletely understood, but poor calcium intake during the adolescent growth spurt may be an important (and potentially reversible) factor. Other clinically relevant causes of reduced bone mineral density in children include osteogenesis imperfecta, rickets, juvenile rheumatoid and other chronic arthritides, osteopenia associated with neuromuscular disorders, and idiopathic osteoporosi

While globus pharyngeus is a common disorder, the cause of this anomaly remains unclear. Gastroesophageal reflux, cricopharyngeal spasm, and many other etiologies have been considered as possible causes. Some researchers believe that the disorder is probably multifactorial in origin. Patients with globus pharyngeus are usually female, and the majority of them are menopausal. These middle aged females often have a reduced bone mineral density. This study was undertaken to determine whether males and females with globus pharyngeus have a reduced bone mineral density. We studied 12 men and 17 wom

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is the most common inherited disorder of connective tissue recognized. The objectives of the present study were to determine bone mineral density (BMD) and biochemical markers of bone metabolism in EDS. Twenty-three subjects with Type III EDS and 23 matched controls underwent BMD measurement by dual-Energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the lumbar spine and femoral neck. Health history questionnaires and biochemical markers of bone and connective tissue metabolism were also assessed. No significant differences in BMD at the lumbar spine or differences in biochemical

Vertebral osteoporosis is a well-recognized feature of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and also the vertebral compression fractures due to osteoporosis are a common but frequently unrecognized complication of AS. Both may contribute to the pathogenesis of spinal deformity and back pain. The aim of this study was to measure vertebral and femoral neck bone mass in patients with AS by dual photon absorptiometry, to determine the prevalence of compression fractures and to examine the relationship between bone density and disease severity. We found that the bone mass was diminished in the lumbar spine

Patients with coeliac disease may have osteomalacia or osteoporosis, even in the absence of abdominal symptoms. Little is known about the effects of a gluten-free diet and villous restitution on the bone mineral density in adult patients with coeliac disease. Of the 288 patients with coeliac disease in our unit, 13 (5%) had persistent villous atrophy of the small bowel despite dietary recommendations over at least the previous 4 years. For each of these 13 patients, 1 or 2 controls with coeliac disease, matched for age, gender, menopausal state, and dermatitis herpetiformis, whose intestinal m
